It's a humor/satire site, with a general emphasis on pop culture. There's nothing wrong with making a little fun of pop culture, especially when it's things that people take entirely too seriously to begin with, or choose to view exclusively with rose-colored lenses. (You should see the massive plot hole they pointed out in Citizen Kane that renders the entire movie impossible.) At the end of the day it's all in fun, and introspective or self-deprecating humor can sometimes be the most satisfying since it's more personal.
Also this is a hella old article, so the writing isn't up to their best standards, and on top of that I'd argue that Bucholz was never one of their best writers to begin with. Either way, it's not like he's off-base on most of these. |

Keep in mind the guy who wrote that article probably got paid for it. On the other hand, we come here and talk about G.I. Joe stuff for free. So just maintain a little perspective and put your "nothing better to do" high horse back in the stable.

So back to vehicles...that were silly.

While some of the consistent features were to keep the vehicles small and inexpensive (exposed turrets and troops hanging off of them in true T-34 fashion, as I watched Hasbro release vehicles over the years I felt they "lost their way". The early vehicles like the MOBAT and VAMP were based on new or prototype vehicles - so were based on reality...just tweaked a bit to make them better toys. But a LOT of the vehicles were just stupid and a few made it on that website.

The one vehicle I will defend to the death is the HISS. Not just because it's the iconic Cobra vehicle, but I think it actually makes a certain amount of sense.
Here's my rationale: The HISS is clearly not heavy enough to be considered a main battle tank. It has more in common with an infantry fighting vehicle, and probably sits in the same weight class as a Bradley, Striker, or K21. The biggest criticism of the HISS (as mentioned in the article) is that it perches on top of its treads. The slab sides and high profile are usually the opposite of what we want in a tank. Main battle tank designs emphasize the importance of a low profile and thick frontal glacis. So it's pretty clear the HISS is not meant to go toe-to-toe with armor on an open battlefield. But if we reconsider its role, it starts to make a bit more sense. Modern counterinsurgency-oriented vehicles like MRAPs sit quite high off the ground in order to (1) add clearance between a mine and the chassis and (2) accommodate a v-shaped hull. Placing the treads directly under the hull means you have a lot of metal mass in between the road and the crew, which is highly desirable if crew survivability is your goal. The high center of gravity makes it undesirable for broken terrain (where tanks don't really excel anyway) but the narrow track width, and the elevated driver and turret are ideal for jungle or urban combat. If we look at the HISS as a low-cost, lightweight troop transport or infantry support vehicle designed for counterinsurgency in third-world IED-heavy conflicts, it actually makes a lot of sense. |
