Have you not been following the Joe line for the past 10 years? Hasbro has shown an immense ability to expand their character roster with a handful of base parts and a few unique assets.
I fully imagine any Joe 6" collector line would follow a LOT of the same engineering concepts as 25th/ME, meaning a LOT of reused assets early on. Here was an earlier proposed release list: Wave 1: 1. Duke new tooling 2. Snake Eyes new tooling 3. Scarlett new tooling 4.Cobra Commander new tooling 5. Storm Shadow new tooling 6. Cobra Trooper new head, torso and arms Wave 2: 1. Destro new tooling 2. Firefly SE body, if SE is V1 3. Cobra Officer Cobra Trooper body 4. Flint new head and arms, rest Duke body 5. Roadblock new tooling 6. Gung-Ho RB arms, rest new Wave 3: 1. General Hawk Duke legs, rest new 2. Beach Head SE/Firely base body 3. Stalker SE or Cobra Trooper body, new head 4. Zartan new tooling 5. Baroness new tooling 6. Crimson Guard new tooling Wave 4: 1. Dr. Mindbender new tooling 2. Major Bludd new tooling, might use Zartan legs 3. Battle Android Trooper new tooling 4. Lady Jaye new tooling 5. Low-Light new tooling 6. Shipwreck new tooling or SE body for DDP look Wave 5: 1. Dusty CT body, new head 2. Spirit Flint body with new head and lower legs 3. Recondo Flint body with new waist and head 4. Serpentor new tooling 5. Zarana new tooling 6. Cobra Viper new tooling Wave 6: 1. Torch new tooling 2. Ripper new tooling 3. Buzzer new tooling 4. Snow Job new tooling 5. Doc Duke body with new head and lower legs 6. Breaker Cobra Trooper with new head and Flint arms Wave 7: 1. Lt. Falcon Cobra Trooper with new head and Duke arms 2. Outback new tooling 3. Tunnel Rat new tooling 4. Thrasher new tooling 5. Monkeywrench Some combo of Gung Ho, Zartan and another Dreadnok with new head 6. Snow Serpent new tooling Wave 8: 1. Torpedo new tooling 2. Mutt & Junkyard Duke with new forearms and lower legs 3. Main Frame Flint with new head 4. Road Pig Gung Ho with new head and legs 5. Cobra Eel Torpedo body 6. Night-Viper Cobra Trooper with new legs Wave 9: 1. Wild Bill new tooling 2. Dial-Tone new tooling, if Firefly uses SE body 3. Life-Line new tooling 4. Scrap Iron Cobra Trooper body, new head 5. Alley-Viper Night Viper body 6. Tele-Viper Viper body Wave 10: 1. Rock & Roll new tooling 2. Leatherneck Duke body, new lower legs 3. Wet-Suit Torpedo body with new arms and lower legs 4. Zandar Zartan body, new head 5. Gnawgahyde Monkeywrench body, new head 6. Iron Grenadier new tooling This is if they use the vest method to differentiate torsos. You may get so leg reuse with modular pouches, but that's still a lot of unique accessories to sculpt for each character.

Though, part of the problem with that list is that it doesn't address repaints. Hawk has two looks, Snake eyes 3 major ones. Cobra Commander has 2 iconic looks. If troop building remains a factor, they could get a LOT of mileage out of the basic Trooper or viper.
And if you guys think we won't see a Snake eyes per year? You're crazy.

And if you guys think we won't see a Snake eyes per wave? You're crazy. In all seriousness, I don't see why Hasbro would invest time, money and resources in a 6'' inch series while the line is so weak. It just does not make sense from a business stand point and I doubt that retailers would be on board. However, Hasbro will reboot GI Joe at some point and that may include a 6'' collector line, but it will almost certainly: A) not include as many different characters as we think. It may include only A-listers like Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Destro, and a handful of others. B) Rely heavily on repaints and re-use of tooling. There will definitely be trooper repaints. C) May not be ARAH characters or looks. It may be the rebooted stuff, especially if they are trying to jump start the new story/universe/characters. OB

That became an issue in the 4" line. There's always people complaining about the lack of new parts in recent years. Plus, I figure 6" collectors that some expect to jump on the Joe bandwagon, with this line, will expect more uniqueness in their figures. Even starting with O13, would probably call for 13 separate headsculpts.

GI Joe surpassed Star Wars back then because they had more articulation, which wouldn't be a factor in this case, and SW was mostly stagnant after ROTJ without new movies to push sales leaving the door open for competitors. Quote:
You still have the same problem, since the looks for those characters are so different sculpt-wise. Hasbro might be silly enough to try and sell hood CC and helmet CC as two separate figures; instead of, one figure with two heads, but Armor CC is a whole different beast. Hawk v1 and v2, also look like two completely different characters. The hair color change alone may confuse those new to the brand. Don't get me started on the Hawk/Duke confusion. Troopbuilding is even worse for a 6" line, unless there are some troopbuilder waves released and retailers aren't big on hero-less assortments.
If Hasbro tried a 6" GI Joe line it can't be marketed the same as the 25th and following lines. I don't think collectors are going to put up with the sales tactics used then. They can't do multiple releases of v1 Duke and v2 Snake Eyes, but instead must get them and the rest right on the first release. I wouldn't expect as many collectors to troop build at this scale, though many might want an extra or two of some figures. Double packing them could be enough to cover demand, otherwise Hasbro could do troop building sets for HASCON or produce solid cases for online retailers, particularly HTS. |
