This is a legitimate and serious question for serious discussion. The quality/look of the RoC toys has no direct impact or bearing on the discussion, so if you're only going to comment "the toys are crap" then please don't bother.
Regardless of how you personally feel about the movie and it's direction (which has no impact or bearing on this discussion) I think we can all agree that RoC is intended to create a new generation of Joe fan and get kids buying the RoC toys (again, whether you agree or don't, that it's something that today's kids would be interested in is irrelevant to this particular discussion). In the RoC Dragonhawk/Para-Viper thread, someone (I believe it was Ewokhunter82) made a comment about the kids not being able to get the Para-Viper because the collector/troop builders would buy them all up. That got me thinking. If the intent is to create a new Joe fan and sell alot of RoC toys to the kids, creating a new "brand" and keeping Joes on the shelves for years to come, then what happens when the kids & new Joe fans can't get all the figures? I only buy the figures I'm interested in. I don't buy everything. For a collector, we have other options that we use to find the things we want. But to some kid walking into a toy store, that's really his only avenue to buy. He's not going to pay EBay scalper prices. He probably doesn't know that BBTS (or any other e-tailers) exist. I didn't know about the e-tailers and the big EBay market until after started hanging around on the HISSTank. Now if the official Joe forums, or even the Collector's Club (which is linked off the official forums) did anywhere near the traffic that the non-official sites (like HISS Tank) does, things like the EBay market and E-Tailers would become known. But again, is a kid with parents buying toys, going to be paying the increased prices of EBay and E-Tailers? So are we going to be limiting what is available on the shelves to just the crap/peg warmers that we don't want? And will that show the public face of the toys to the kids? Will they then think that the only toys are the crap/peg warmers that are left there for reasons (because they suck, lol). Scalpers exist because of the collector's and troop builders markets. So between the 3 groups, we can clean the shelves off pretty damn good and VERY quickly. Will there be anything left for the kids? Will it allow the line to grow the way it needs to? Or will our buying habits make it impossible for the next generation to get into Joe and the same thing happens that would have happened with the 25th/ME line, it grows stagnant and dies as the collectors/troop builders stop buying/no longer have anything they're interested in buying/grow too old and no longer have interest. Instead of RoC hooking an 8-10 year old into the RoC toys, because of us and making it harder for that kid to get the toys, will RoC even be able to survive and keep toys on the shelves? Will there be enough for that 8-10 year old to keep him hooked on buying Joes for the next 6 years? We know all the stuff coming for 2009 and early 2010. There's alot of cool stuff. But will a kid that tries to get into the toyline in August actually have anything worth getting? The sales will be there, because of us, but will the fan interest? We could keep RoC going for awhile, but without new blood coming in and buying Joe eventually (sooner, rather then later) the line will go stagnant again and "die" (like it did in the '90s and in the years prior to the 25th when it was DTC and online only stuff and then limited). If I'm a kid getting into a new toyline, why would I want to bother if I couldn't get everything I want? If I'm jonesing for a Para-Viper and can't get it, why bother? Why keep going to the store week after week trying/hoping to find this 1 figure and failing? At that point, it's give up and go look for the next "shiny". The things that would have hooked me are no longer there because I couldn't get them. I had the hardest time getting the original Dial-Tone and Beachhead. I wanted those two BADLY. I had my mom stop constantly at every store we drove by in the hopes of finding those 2. I finally did (in another state, 3 hours from home). But I never would have had that diehard attitude and NEED to get those figures if I hadn't gotten hooked in the prior years by being able to get the figures I wanted when I wanted. If all I had been left with were Dreadnoks, I never would have become a huge Joe fan. So that's the question, is there a chance that we will prevent the next generation from being created?

While I want to take time to provide a more substantial answer, I want to simply say that Hasbro show produce figures in large enough quantities to supply all potential buyers.
I'll contribute more to the discussion once I have more time to think about it and type. Great thread! I look forward to the discussion. |

There was tons of things I didnt get as a kid.
for one I never got any of the Toys R Us exclusives, because i didnt have one in my town. my parents also had a veto over all of the figures so i never had some key individuals like serpentor or dr. mindbender. And it took forever to find a bat or snake eyes, but that didnt stop my love of the line. |

I don't think children will care too much about the Para-Viper. I think that's a repaint clearly aimed at collectors.
We didn't have the internet when we were growing up. If a kid does want a Para-Viper, I think he'll be able to get one. He might have to pay more for it like the rest of us, though. I think if kids want any of the movie toys at all, they'll want Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Duke...characters that actually are in the movie and prominently so. |

You do pose an interesting question. And for the record, I think the ROC figures are fine. I will be getting a few. But it sounds like that there will not be a problem getting these. From what I hear, most retailers will have quite a few to go around. In my area, I am one of a few if not the only collector. So I think kids have an ample opportunity to get Joes, at least in my area. Also, some collectors buy for their children also.
The thing is, Joe has a lot of competition these days. Not just with toys, but with gaming systems and the like. Joe always won out at our house even though we also likes Star Wars and MOTU. I'm not great at predicting stuff, but I think that many children will get "hooked" with the movie. It does look cool, there are heroes, and they are shooting things. Kids will buy them.

The kids likely have some savy parents who are online. But I can see them missing out at the pegs. Heck I know what time to go to get there as stuff is just being put out and I still miss out on stuff.

I really dont get the new Joe's, just the vehicles.
I do plan on getting them for my brothers little 6 year old twins in hopes that they will like GI Joe as much, or more then Transformers. You do have a valid point though. Are the collectors going to make it disappointing for the youngster that just want to play with then, but cant find the ones he wants in the store...

I'm trying to remember what figures I loved as a kid and if any of them were hard to find, and I'm drawing a blank. Granted, back in the 80s-90s there was no 'nostalgia' factor like there is today.
That being said, I think that Hasbro is trying to keep seperation between which toys are for collectors versus for kids. That is why we are getting the two seven-packs after all. Kids will go after the dukes, snake-eyes, storm shadows, but I don't think many will go after five para-vipers, three RHINOs, etc. Hasbro is gearing up big for this, so I think there will be ample figures for all, which hopefully will lead to more and more product. I don't think we as collectors will hurt the line. Good discussion! |

Honestly, I rarely buy anything in the stores because I can't find anything in the stores. Dunno if thats because of the collectors/scalpers.. all the greedy little children or if this area simply sucks as far as toy distribution or management.
I buy almost exclusively from the Internet.. I have recently made some nice finds in some of the discount stores.. but I gotta tell you toys don't fly off the shelves around here so pretty much if a kid wants something he can get it. Ive seen the same stuff on the shelves for sometimes three months and its not the general peg warmers either. I just don't collect those lines. Joe stuff has been next to impossible to find around here but the stuff that is there will sit for months.. I'm not much of a troop builder I do buy extra figures for customs but again mostly online shopping for me. I understand your concern, but I think we have less to worry about the collectors stealing toys from kids and more worried about kids just don't care about toys because of all the techno toys they have. I wish kids wanted to play with toys more though and I would like to figure a way to help reinvigorate the industry.

According to some posters, nobody will buy the new ROC figures, so there should be plenty on the shelf for children. lol
First, if people would quit buying from scalpers, there wouldn't be scalpers. Second, I think some army builders are just plain greedy. (I never did find an Eel.) But I think the movie toys are going to come out in bigger numbers. I have a feeling that once they hit, nobody is going to have a hard time finding what they want.
