I like Transformers, but I haven't (and not going to) buy any of the Joes.
So what does how the TF2 toys have to do with how RoC is going to do?
The closest comparasion would be Star Wars and the movie Clone Wars toys. How did those sell after the movie came out?

I remember going to ToysRUs as a kid with my older brother and asking one of the employees to see if they had some of the newer GI JOE figures in the back. He brought up a full, sealed case of figures and it was a beautiful sight. I never saw a case before and this was full of the GI JOE series 3 figures - Scrap Iron, Firefly, Storm Shadow, Recondo, ect.. I bought the two I needed and left the rest. I never remember any of my friends buying them to keep on their cards or get vehicles sealed in their boxes and I never even heard of toy collectors back then.
We never had scalpers back then either in the early 80's. I remember popular toys being in abundance back then in the stores. ToysRUs was the beacon of toys back then. Kaybee had a good selection, but way over priced. I remember back when Transformers had just released series 3 - the movie series back in 1986, and ToysRUs was loaded full of series one, series two and series 3 figures. They had all the cars, jets and dinobots plus others like the insecticons. There were tons of Joe stuff too. I could find just about anything back then in the stores. Stuff used to stay on shelves for a year, now it's about every 4 months or less.
Fast forward to today and you can only find a limited selection. I don't go to the stores anymore. I tried that once back in January 09 and went to about 20 stores like Target, ToysRUs, Walmart, ect. during a Saturday and Sunday. Every store had been picked clean and most had the same inventory which was little anyways.
We also never had any kind of action figure grading like AFA back then. It just blows me away to see series one and series 2 GI JOE figures on their cards selling for thousands of dollars AFA graded. I used to pick those figures up at JAFCO for $2.19 or $2.49 at BIMART. Now they are worth hundreds, some even thousands.
Kids today are not going to have the same memories that people from my generation had. I doubt they will want to come back and collect what they never got 10,15 or 20 years later. Some kids today will most likely never be able to complete any series if they wanted to without paying a fortune for them.

Before the economy crashed I seen toys selling fairly well but afterward i've hardly seen any toys that have sold well. It's hard to judge way a toy is or isn't selling right know.
I will say that the toys that have the better quality are selling better than the cheap poorly made ones lines like the Star-Trek and Terminator toys and i think that is directly because of collectors and kids that want Star wars and Transformers.
No a side note I have seen a few kids wanting Gi Joes

I never understood the heavy toy marketing for Terminator since it was mainly a rated R franchise up until Salvation. I remember the T2 line having tons of toys on the shelves. I think the more mature target audience and the fact that the toys really sucked was the reason for the failure of the T: Salvation line. LOL!

the transformers comparison is very likely right on. your being dense if your not seeing the overall picture.
both lines by the todays are pretty much unknown by todays kids.
they needed movies to be brought to their attention.
vs price point. looks the gijoe is going to cost more then transformers.
8.99 suggested for figures. vehicles are what this time?almost 20.
night raven an rhino near 40 or 50.
the PITT??? $100. transformers doesnt have any of that huge stuff.
gijoe will be completely new to most of this generation of kids.
as it is the first few waves will be under their radar still as the movie wont be out for over a month, yet toys they have no connection to will be out.
really most movie tie ins dont do well.look at star trek, hulk indy.

Transformers has a popular cartoon out, with a tie-in toyline. How's that unknown by today's kids?
Star Wars is closer because the scale of the figures and the vehicles are the same, so price wise it's they match up.
Indy wasn't a movie aimed at kids. I was actually surprised to find out there was a toy line, Indy and action figures didn't make much sense to me, seriously, how many kids went and say Crystal Skull. Again, Hulk, not really a movie that can generate alot of excitement for a Joe-Scale Hulk line. You buy 1 Hulk figure.. okay, what now??
Star Trek is getting closer, but again, I don't think it had the same "kid presence" that TFormers, Clone Wars and Joe has/had/will have.

I've passed on buying up all of a particular figure at the toy store with the intent of leaving them there for a kid to find.
I will be out of town the weekend of the 4th, and do fear coming home to peg warmers though.

It's a no win.
If you buy stuff to keep Joe alive it could end up being more MOVIE type stuff. If you don't buy cause you don't like some fear it will go away.
It's a no win.
Just buy want you like and hope for the best.
