Right after eBay stopped letting sellers leave negative feedback, I started getting messages from buyers that sounded an awful lot like extortion.
I had one buyer write that the item arrived as described, but it "wasn't in as quite as nice a shape as I'd hoped." Ugh. Just this creepy tone of "hey, I'm not saying you have to refund some of my money..." I had another write, "Just to let you know, the item arrived today. The box didn't hold up to the mail service and was pretty much destroyed. The product was not damaged (which is good!), but wanted to advise you. Thanks." Again, they took the time to write me that the box was destroyed by USPS. Why? It came across like they wanted some kind of refund for USPS destroying the box - even though the the item was fine. A third buyer bought a Masters of the Universe Classics figure in a factory-sealed mailer box from me. When it arrived, the buyer opened the mailer and didn't like the paint apps. So he wrote to tell me that he wasn't happy with the paint, but that he'd decided to let it slide. Because, you know, I'm somehow responsible for Mattel's paint on a figure I've never seen in the factory-sealed shipping box.

I called and emailed him 6 times over a 3-week period, none of the calls went answered. Never heard from him again. |

Exactly why I mark all of my auctions as:
Sold As/is No refunds Postal insurance available at cost to buyer, please specify insurance amount. I had someone pull that, sold them a rather rare piece, and they didn't want to pay for insurance. When they tried to file a case on it (damaged in shipping) ebay sided with me and pulled his feedback.

If the seller feels something was not properly described they can open a case, and will win 999 out of 1000 times. Placing language like no refunds and sold as is in your ebay auctions is at best useless, and at worst a violation of ebay policy. Also insurance does not protect the buyer. It protects the seller because all ebay transactions are FOB destination, meaning the seller is responsible for the item until it is received by the buyer. I recently sold an expensive Thundercats creature on ebay. Despite being well packed, it was broken in shipping. I refunded the buyer upon being made aware of the damage. Luckily I insured the item, and both the buyer and myself were made whole. Last edited by brcthrift; 06-18-2012 at 04:55 PM.. |

I don't understand this line of thinking. If an item is damaged during shipping it is the buyer's responsibility 100% of the time.

Its always such a great joy when I receive a package and it has $4.50 price sticker for the postage clearly on the box and is in a $1 envolope stuffed with news paper that took 3 weeks to arrive and I get charged 15$ or more for "expidited" shipping with tracking (and there never wa sa tracking number)...and open to find the item has been destroyed by the USPS...lol

I'm not charging an insurance fee, I am including it in the cost of shipping. Ala when you go to the PO and send item X it will cost 11$ to send to Buttcrack, Montana. The same package to Buttcrack would be 14$ with insurance. I always give the buyer the option if they want to pay the extra shipping to cover it. Otherwise I'm usually dead on with my pricing or I refund it.
I will agree that I hate people that charge for expedited shipping and it shows up like a week and a half after I've paid.

Hence if it gets destroyed in shipping I open a dispute and get my money back from Paypal as the shipper failed to ensure my product arrived safely..I put shipping and handleing on the seller since they like to reocup so much profit in that area anyway..if they dont take the time to ensure it has tracking, proper shipping care and I never receive my item or it arrives busted...yeah I am getting my money back pronto on that dealio...

I meant shipping is the seller's responsibility 100% of the time. Buyer's should expect to get items in the expected condition that are well packed. However, newspaper is the best stuff for holding an item still during shipping. I'd prefer to see something surrounded by newspaper than packing peanuts. |
