We can use this thread to discuss the secondary market on ME figures. I did a study tonight on the eBay selling prices of the first 4 FSS series.
This is today's price ranking of the first four FSSes based on available completed, sold eBay auctions for carded copies: $140 - FSS 1.0 Big Boa $135 - FSS 1.0 Covergirl $85 - FSS 3.0 Bombstrike $80 - FSS 1.0 Dice $75 - FSS 1.0 Jinx $75 - FSS 1.0 Iron Klaw $70 - FSS 3.0 Slice $70 - FSS 4.0 Law & Order $70 - FSS 4.0 Billy Arboc $65 - FSS 3.0 Crimson Guard Immortal $65 - FSS 3.0 Spearhead $64 - FSS 3.0 Muskrat $60 - FSS 2.0 Cesspool $60 - FSS 3.0 Big Ben $60 - FSS 3.0 Repeater $60 - FSS 3.0 Frostbite $55 - FSS 1.0 Quarrel $55 - FSS 2.0 Keel-Haul $50 - FSS 1.0 Topside $50 - FSS 2.0 Desert Scorpion $50 - FSS 3.0 Hit & Run $50 - FSS 4.0 Tiger Force Outback $50 - FSS 4.0 Pathfinder $45 - FSS 1.0 Nano-B.A.T. $45 - FSS 1.0 Sure Fire $45 - FSS 2.0 Widescope $45 - FSS 4.0 Bullhorn $45 - FSS 4.0 Nunchuk $45 - FSS 4.0 Carla "Doc" Greer $40 - FSS 1.0 Blackout $40 - FSS 2.0 Big Bear $40 - FSS 2.0 Tollbooth $40 - FSS 3.0 Vypra $40 - FSS 3.0 Psyche-Out $35 - FSS 4.0 Interrogator $30 - FSS 1.0 Barrel Roll $30 - FSS 2.0 Dragonsky $30 - FSS 2.0 Night Force Falcon $30 - FSS 3.0 Alpine $30 - FSS 3.0 Night Creeper Leader $27 - FSS 4.0 Tiger Force Sneak Peek $25 - FSS 2.0 Tiger Force Shipwreck $25 - FSS 2.0 Skullbuster $24 - FSS 4.0 Inferno B.A.T. $24 - FSS 4.0 Ice Ninja Night Creeper $24 - FSS 4.0 Calvin "Jammer" Mondale $22 - FSS 1.0 Grunt $22 - FSS 2.0 Grand Slam $20 - FSS 2.0 Tiger Force Airtight $18 - FSS 4.0 Barricade $17 - FSS 1.0 T.N.T. $15 - FSS 2.0 Bombardier FSS 1.0 Total Price: $809 (avg. $62) FSS 1.0 clearly benefits from rarity, best demonstrated by Dice out-pricing Slice. Although that doesn't help T.N.T., who seems to be suffering from a dislike for obscure foreign characters and distaste for the Blowtorch mold. He is the second-cheapest character in all the FSSes. However, FSS 1.0 deserves a special prize for the only FSS to have any characters priced over $100, and I mean way over $100 for Big Boa and Covergirl. FSS 2.0 Total Price: $457 (avg. $35) This is the lowest-priced FSS of them all. FSS 2.0 clearly suffers from over-production, with only 3 figures breaking $50, and they are extremely popular characters who had the potential to rise higher if they were less common, including Cesspool, Keel-Haul and Desert Scorpion, who can at least brag about being the second most popular trooper in all the FSSes. This FSS has a whopping 7 characters going for $30 or less, including the lowest-priced figure of them all, Bombardier. And its mystery figure Grand Slam is the 5th lowest-priced figure in all the FSSes. Latecomers to the line must surely appreciate the low-cost availability of this FSS. FSS 3.0 Total Price: $719 (avg. $55) Surprisingly, FSS 3.0 comes close to rivaling FSS 1.0 for the most expensive FSS despite FSS 1.0 being two years older. The lowest-priced figure in this FSS sells for $30, while FSS 1.0 has 3 figures at $30 or lower. This high floor for FSS 3.0 prices, even for unpopular characters, is a clear indication that production was cut on this series. FSS 3.0 also boasts the 3rd most expensive figure in all the FSSes, one that is close enough to $100 that it might get there someday, Bombstrike. It also has a whopping 9 figures breaking $50, 2 more than FSS 1.0, including Frostbite, the most expensive of the 4 mystery figures. And this FSS has the most expensive trooper in all the FSSes, Crimson Guard Immortal, who ranks as the 10th most expensive figure in all the FSSes. FSS 4.0 Total Price: $527 (avg. $40) FSS 4.0 is the next lowest-priced series after FSS 2.0, with only 4 characters breaking $50. But its top 2, Billy and Law & Order, outrank anything from FSS 2.0, no doubt riding on the sheer popularity of the characters. This is a very polarized FSS, with those 2 in the top 10 highest-priced overall, but with 5 characters priced under $30. This FSS also has the notoriety of producing two troopers that are massive aftermarket flops, priced under $25, troopers that were so low on everyone's wish lists that their names aren't worth repeating here. In short, each FSS is at a bare minimum holding its value based on the subscriber pricing. Two of them are just about doubling their original subscriber price or better, while two of them are just staying even with or falling behind the non-subscriber club member pricing. As for FSS 5.0, watch this space. So far, it's performing well, with 4 of the first 6 characters right around $50 or even higher in Salvo's case. However, Viper and Charbroil are barely breaking $30. The average figure price is $46, putting it squarely in the middle of the previous FSSes. With Raptor and Xamot still to come though, that average has a good chance to go up. I definitely expect FSS 5.0 to be more in the range of FSS 3.0 pricing wise. The figures are really nice

I just wonder if the potential closing of the club impacted production quantities. I think they wouldn't have started production until after they knew they were going to stay open, so maybe not. If they thought they were going to close though, I wonder if that would've made them want to produce less thinking they'd have less time to sell off the extras or to produce more so they could keep selling backstock on eBay for years and keep some Joe-related profits coming in.
At least the overall strength of the FSS 5.0 line-up was based on the fact they thought they were closing, so they had no desire to hold anything good back for later. I also think Raptor and Xamot have a chance to become the next $100+ figures. They're going to disappear from the club store in about 10 minutes when they go up. Thanks, Jedi Jones, for the data.

Billy was never before released as a figure, he was a character in the ARAH comics. There are a few notable exceptions, but most figures that are based on ARAH figures not yet released in v1 deco are more expensive/in demand. (All except Grand Slam who has several other similar ME figures & Barricade who has just horrible parts choices are $35 or over.) New Sculpt/post ARAH figures are kind of mixed, but usually between $30-$45. International figures are doing the worst. (Quarrel, a female from the 1st FSS, and Outback, with a brand new head sculpt are the only ones to break $30.) I've been saying since the beginning of the FSS the Club should focus more on ARAH figures, and only sprinkle in New Sculpt and International figures sparingly. I think this data shows a lot of other collectors agree with that opinion. I kept hearing then that the club had to mix in other characters and save some ARAH figures for future waves. Well, we are likely down to the last 2 years of FSS, so there is no point in delaying the most wanted figures anymore.

Good color-coding. I was trying to figure out a pattern based on which groups of figures did better overall, but this makes it much more clear than I was seeing before.
The big problem might be how few ARAH figures are left to do, especially 1980s ones. And even some of those may be in low demand, like Windmill. I can understand them wanting to spread these characters out across FSSes and con sets so they don't have to eventually try to sell a set with only international and 2000s figures. We're not sure yet that their license won't be extended again either and they may be planning on that. I wouldn't discount V2s as a concept though. Obviously some of the line's earliest V2s like SE, SS, CC and Destro are iconic. The as yet unmade Rock 'N Roll and Stalker would be great sellers. There may be some more gold to mine in some of the better '90s V2s or V3s as well. I definitely hate though when they do V2s BEFORE the V1s like NCL, Barrel Roll and Flagg. I also think there are more figures that could reach the level of Sure Fire and Wide Scope to be found in the 2000s line. Munitia, Scalpel, Medi-Viper, Plague members, to name some good villain picks. The fact that Neo-Viper hasn't been touched in the modern era is surprising to me. Moray has potential too, but obviously we need Hydro-Viper first and yesterday. G.I. Jane, Hollowpoint and Cross Hair have potential on the Joe side. Barricade's weakness is not so much the build but the fact that he was a huge pegwarmer in the '90s himself. I bought a stack of them at Hills for pennies on the dollar. That is getting into the realm of '90s abortions no one wants to see brought back. However the '90s still has gems to be unearthed. Headman and the Headhunters are near the top of the list, but probably make more sense as a con set with D.E.F. Billy and Pythona were those rarities of totally unmade 1980s characters that had the ability to sell great now. I don't think any more of those are waiting in the wings. But if you include some of the ones that were made first in the 2000s comic packs, General Flagg Sr. shoots to the top of the list. The disparity between Big Bear and Dragonsky shows that simply having an ARAH figure can bump your price up by 33%. Dragonsky is arguably a more significant member of OG, especially going by the comics. But I still think Misha and Gorky would be worthy additions to the FSS despite only being 2000s figures previously. Another small area the club hasn't touched at all yet are Sunbow variations on characters, especially M.A.S.S. Device Covergirl and Daina. Given the huge prices on their previous club figures, those two would be wise moves. Doing a whole Sunbow-colored OG would be a wise move given the demand for the con figures. Hasbro has shown Sunbow variants can be popular in their M.A.S.S. Device sets, notably their Lady Jaye variant. Last edited by JediJones; 03-19-2017 at 06:00 PM.. |
