Hello:
I'm new to this site and to building this great collection... I have some good vintage Joes already back at home, but now I've started buying some good and some not that good things over ebay but my question is: How much is too much, how to control passing on an auction on ebay and how to measure if you're overspending in a figure... Please let me know what you think... |

Simply focus on the pieces that you really want. For instance, I collect only non-neon joes. Everything that has neon colors, I simply pass.
Procuring yourself a copy of Mark Bellomo's book is also a good strategy. You can identify the vehicles/figures you really want off line, and then track it online. |

Well it depends... The way I saw it was I grabbed alot of Joes early, and I mean alot, I bought like over $1000 worth in like 2 months all over eBay because there wasn't much on offer in Australia, so once I got the main Joes I wanted, I slowed down... also need to think about what you want, are there some you want more then others, are they sealed or not, do they come with weapons, full items they were sealed with and carded with, also helps to know what things are worth in store price, what they are worth now, but if you want something, you will pay that extra dollar or two, so it's upto you, I have cut back quite alot though, I have alot that I wanted, I am now just buying stuff here and there that catch my eye and that I have an interest in, like Tiger Force and some 25th Anniversary Vehicles and Figures, also got the 1st and 2nd edition of the Joe Guide, so if there is something you really want, just be smart about it, don't bid on the first one you see, keep looking to see if there is a better deal or if you can trade here on HissTank, your not stupid, you will know when enough is enough so as I said keep looking for that better deal on what you want, cos you may or may not find it, plus just think what you really want, really, really want.

Yea Bishop is spot on with what he said also, there are some Joes that I am simply not interested in because of the colours, also the same with the vehicles.
Don't just get something that is Joe because it is Joe, get it because you think it's awesome, because it looks mad as and because you remembered having one as a child and have lost it since or you wanted one really bad as a child but never got it, that's one way I see things also. |

I buy whatever I like, and whatever I think I might be able to use for customs. If I "overstock", I either trade with someone here on the 'Tank, take it back to WM, or sell it on eBay. You really do have to set limits for yourself. Decide if you are going to be a completist, which I'm not, then it's tougher. If you are going to collect both opened and MOC, then you will also shell out a little more. Personally, I have a couple of figures that I keep MOC, and then I collect a few figures here and there that I really like. I will be getting some of the ROC stuff, but not a lot. I'm limiting myself there also. The way I look at ebay is, I won't pay more than the price of the figure at retail plus shipping, if it's reasonable.

Too much is when you find yourself short cash to do something else. Anything else. A collection should never overtake other responsibilities or social activities. Anytime you find yourself with a pile of new Joes, but have to cancel your weekend plans...or eat Krap dinner...or miss out on anything - you've spent too much.

i just spent $200 on my first taobao.com outing... which is fine cuz as far as I'm concerned... the stuff was worth it cuz it was weird rare stuff etc.
i refuse to start buying up ROC stuff or 25th stuff on ebay unless i REALLY like it... i.e. Resolute Troopers and ROC prototypes. there are a couple ROC figures I want just for fun... but i don't wanna spend $30 for MOSC's that will be here before XMAS (give or take). I have no job. I'm a stay at home father. so spending anything at all for the most part is TOO much. that's why i've been selling things to buy joes. i've sold $2,000 worth of non-joe stuff in the past two months and itz all gone to joes. SO I don't feel like I've got anything to control for now. once i run out of shit to sell and get a job once my kid goes to school... then i'll be asking myself what you're asking yourself now.

Yup Klinton is also spot on here as well, just need to be smart about how you are spending, what you are spending it on, do you really really need it.
I collect 25th Ann mainly MOC, but have a couple of figures loose though cos they look too cool to stay sealed, haha, but the older Joes I have loose, but have found some MOC because I have searched and kept looking til I have found that better deal or someone has traded with me something. |
