I have to believe that is what they are working on now. I can't believe the HCU won't include TV shows. Probably better of with TV anyway. HCU is not Disney/Marvel/Star Wars. Maybe TF is close but not the rest of the properties (Joe,Mask,Rom,etc$

Imagine this a 30 minute TV cartoon starts with live action of an 8 year old boy, comes home from school, sneaks past mom so she doesn't hear him. Lays his book bag down gently. Goes lightly up the stairs to his bedroom. He grabs his IDW Joe or Transformers comic and hides under his covers with a flash light and starts to read it. Then the animation begins and story leaps off the page. Make it clever like It can be like the Simpsons where it changes where he hides a little each episode. Or even a different kid/house each time. The story that starts should/could be based on the comic he is reading.
In one 30 second clip before it starts you just told kids and parents these Shows have comic book tie ins and IDW doesn't have to spend a nickel on a commercial. You've just made it look cool to read the comics in addition to watching the show. It incorporates the kind of multi media tie the original ARAH line had for kids. Start with separate TF and Joe shows. They shoot lasers. Slowly make it clear they inhabit the same universe. Not all at once but slowly with crossover characters and build over the 10/12 episodes run. By the end of the first seasons you have some figs/toys on the shelves. The next season you introduce the other properties to those shows that make sense. Rom with the transformers. Joe and Mask teamup. Bring in the second tier stuff slowly. I'm sure Hasbro is working on some thing similar for their HCU. But I think starting with movies would be a mistake and it has to be kid friendly (lasers not bullets). But having that 20-30 seconds of showing a kid hunkering down with his Joe or Transformers comic and the story "leaping" off the page into a cartoon will go a long way towards selling comics and start to grow the brand organically. Just MHO. |

Nice. Use that same beginning as a commercial intro to a comic/toy advertisement, like issue #11 Alaska pipeline.

For me the most obvious solution is to tie the toyline with the movie. I am not an avid collector of other brands and even my GI Joe collecting is not what it once was but overall from what I have observed is that any of the action figure lines - whether it be Marvel, Star Wars, Ninja Turtles, Lego have strong ties to the movies being released for them. It seems more and more difficult to have a product stand on its own without a movie marketing machine behind it to push the product.
Halo toys are obviously backed up by a strong video game franchise. GI Joe has had none of that market presence in the past 5 years. I also would be the first to admit I am totally out of touch with what types of stuff kid's collect today in terms of toys. It's crazy to me to think about to 2008-2012 and all of the Joe stuff widely available to seeing the market shrink down to almost nothing. GI Joe could easily be developed into a first person shooter, third person shooter or real time strategy game. There is alot of depth of characters and Cobra would be an amazing enemy to see on display. |

I did not know that HTS was not run and owned by Hasbro. And from around 2004-2009 I was just starting my career, getting married and my son was born. I missed out on the 25th stuff and caught the tail end of POC when I happened into Tru for a gift for my toddler son.
Kids today love funny cartoons, video games and anything interactive play. My kids only like action figures because i introduced them to those and sometimes play with the figures with them. A lot of kids i know dont seem to like imaginative play with small toys. They are into games and apps and such. I agree with many others that there needs to be cartoons to get the next generation hooked. Someone somewhere on here mentioned like Rescue Bots as an intro to transformers. |
