Riddle me this: Why is the G.I. Joe team using an industrial gas mask for their modern action figures? Today, I finally realized which mask the action figures are wearing in the ROC series.
During my decades of military service with the Fleet Marine Force, I used both the M17 gas mask and the M40 Field Protective Mask. Now, the M50 Joint Service General Purpose Mask is replacing all of those, and allows for easier breathing and a better field of view. So why are Duke and the Pit Commando figures equipped with the industrial purpose Scott M110 CBRN Gas Mask? I don’t know, but maybe the artists just liked the sculpt design better, or maybe it required less plastic for production. What are your thoughts? |

it's aesthetically pleasing and serves no real purpose or function...just looks cool.

Cause they secretly go to raves and that is the easiest mask to come by at the Army Surplus?

The Scott M95s and M110s are popular COTS solutions for CBRN and tactical first responders, so I don't see any real reason why the Joe team wouldn't use them. It's not like the Joes use standard equipment anyway... you're talking about a unit where almost everybody uses a unique assault rifle, shotgun, submachine gun, or PDW as their preferred weapon (just think of all the different non-STANAG magazines their armorer and supply sergeant have to keep track of) and nobody dresses in a prescribed uniform.

It just seems that the G.I. Joe team, which certainly were equipped with some nice NATO weaponry in the movie, wouldn't resort to discounted gas masks. They're the best of the best, the alpha dogs, and all stuff that they said in the film. I have noticed that the Pit Commandos, recent Alley Vipers, etc. have drawn much inspiration from SWAT and first responders, so I believe you are probably right. |
