As I sit here looking at the 2016 assortment of Joes, I can't help but wonder what may be on the horizon for our beloved action figure line. To me, Gi Joe is and will always be the beloved 3.75" figures that I grew to love as a child in the 80's. My hope is that whatever direction Hasbro takes the brand, its with keeping kids in mind. This generation deserves its own Joes and should have a uniqueness to them, much like ours did in the 80's. This could mean a complete makeover to the Joe's as we know them. Will you still support the line if that happens? Will a new size, new figure, new story line dissuade you from collecting GI Joe? I believe that should a new cartoon be introduced along with product support and a connection with kids, we may just see something great. Along with most of you (I assume) I would still like my 3.75" figures to continue, but I'm not sure this is the direction Hasbro is going. Perhaps they can segment the line like SW with different levels of figures, or class them like the TF line. We associate Joes with these little
Action figures, but it could be so much more. Many of us on this forum chose professions based on our love for Joes; Military, police, firefighter, etc...because in some way, Joe's inspired us. Looking ahaead, I am prepared to let go of 3.75" figures if it means a new generation gets something that can inspire them. Look at the number of figures produced for us since 2007 alone. Haven't we been taken care of? Will we ever be fully satisfied, no matter how many new figures are made each year? I'd like to know what others thinks, and by no means should this be a "death of the line" rant, merely share what you feel.

Honestly, I'm probably out no matter what comes along next year. It just feels like a good stopping point, for some reason, and I know I don't want to grow my little collection much larger than it is currently. I'm also losing interest, it seems. There's just a whole lot about this hobby I no longer care for. Plus, my son "outgrew" action figs/toys this year, so I've lost the major thing that kept me in it/interested in it.
All that said, I hope the next iteration of G.I. Joe is something the kids dig and it's around for a long, long time. In order to do that though, I'm afraid it probably won't appeal to the bulk of adult fans. I've noticed that the age of kids who play with action figures seems to now be in the 3-7 range, or thereabouts, and the toys are reflecting that. They're definitely geared toward a younger market than we're used to. Current action figure lines for GOTG, Spiderman and etc are more Playskool than they are Modern Era G.I.Joe. I expect G.I. Joe will follow suit. |

I think the biggest change to G.I. Joe should be a simple one: Hasbro owns the brand, like Mr. Potato Head and My Little Pony, they don't have to pay licensing rights for it. There's no excuse for such an iconic brand not being in every department store, discount store, drug store and grocery store in America. Back in the 1960's Hasbro tried a brief experiment with their 12 inch G.I. Joe brand and created "Action Joe," a non-military version of the figure that included a Race Car Driver and a State Trooper. So I'm suggesting that Hasbro keep making affordable 4-inch figures for a lower price point, like the Dollar General Joes of a few years ago, but sell a variety of "Joes." In fact, the word "JOE" should be the largest part of the logo. G.I. Joe and Cobra would be included of course, but in different assortments you could have fire fighters, police, explorers, astronauts, superheroes, zombie fighters, anything that's in pop culture of today. Kids should be able to ask for a "Joe" and get the most fun and diverse action figures ever.

I'd like joe to keep the scale it currently has, but I'm not opposed to a "kid centric" line. If they are the same scale, but more cartoonish, I'll probably stay in. I don't have interest in another scale size, but I might support it for my 7 year old. If they went with a 6 inch scale, I would get some, but I would be pickier; because of the price point. Hopefully, vehicles will make a comeback for 2017; with some new molds.

They haven't been 3.75" in years. Modern scale is 1:18 with an upward scale creep happening.

I grew up with the 12" Military Joes and loved it when they became the Adventure Team. I have stated in several posts how my love for GI Joe only deepened when I saw the Joes in 1988 in that amazing full-aisle assortment. Yes, we have been taken care of. I have several close friends because of this hobby, but some of them come close to ruining the fun because of their entitlement and negativity. I would love to see the 1:18 scale continue, but I am a sigma six fan in favor of design, concept and scale. I have a sizable collection of them set aside for my grandchildren, as a way to introduce them to GI Joe. Being a veteran (USN) I do enjoy the vehicles and myriad of specialties and ranks, and the vehicles (Especially the Flagg) and I will support the club, hasbro's offerings, and the current scale. I would love a return to a larger scale, especially Black series or Marvel Legends with limited vehicles but with accessories to expand the play value. I do support the 1:18 scale crowdfunding projects as much as my budget allows. Marauder is the future of this scale and this line. semi customizable figures are the play value that will help compete with video games. I think tapping into the Walking Dead License, and Call of Duty, and even Warhammer 40k is an untapped potential of growth. GI Joe has roots in our country's great military history, but the Adventure Team could be a a spring board into a noncombatant genre, and even a time-traveling option to pull in eras of adventure and the historical struggle for liberty and exploration. the potential is there, I am not sure the market will support it. As I try to remind all of the GI Joe Enthusiasts: This is a toy, that HAPPENS to be collectible. Please remember that without the kids, there is no GI Joe. WE, COLLECTORS, DON"T COUNT!

First, they need to be made more for kids than adults. So lose some articulation, and bring back the fun. Make them modular, similar to what the Iron Man 3 figures were like, but much better quality. And the headsculpts would benefit from having a bit more character to them. Maybe something similar to the Sigma 6 ones, just at the 4" size. Realism is overrated, they need to look heroic and easily identifiable. Screw collectibility, that has no place in a toy store. They need to make so many of the things that after the adults hoard them, there's still some left over for the kids.

My 7 year old loves his Gi Joe. When his friends come to play they love them but have know idea what they are playing with. My son knows from the old cartoons and my comics but his friends have no frame of reference to the characters. They just love the army guys and their guns and vehicles. Its too bad that a cartoon can't be produced that would draw kids into the brand.Spider-man reintroduced itself to a new generation with the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon. The same can be said for the new Nick TMNT. The only complaint that my son has about the 50th figures is their inability to hold weapons while he is playing with them. It's weird to me because my old joes rarely seemed to have that problem. It doesn't deter him from playing with them. He puts his guys in the vehicles and when the action happens the guns seem to float above them and fire at the enemy. Weird to me but works for him hahaha.

The big reality is that while we would all love joes to go on and on, but The interest in joes died in 2007-8ish to the masses. The only way Hasbro can bring them back is if they rebrand the whole series. Since the world is pretty anti gun right now I doubt gun toting good and bad guys would be something parents would want their kids playing with.
I could see a ninja force style line being successful, but they would have to drop and the gun using. I could see a sigma 6 return being more successful this time around too. Anime and the 2 scales they came in are popular right now so who knows. Could also see a 6inch "classic" figures being paired with it Overall I would be kinda glad if it died out mostly because there isn't a place for gijoe in the modern world. I'd also be happy with a star brigade ending to the line.
