I went to Wal-Mart tonight to get some green tea and Special K. As always, I stopped by the toy section to see if there was any new Joe or SW stuff. I knew there wouldn't be, but I had to check anyway. I was startled to see some of the toys rearranged and a section of the display was covered by a huge trashbag. On the trashbag was a sign that said "Transformers 2 Toys Available at Midnight Tonight". Of course I peeked under the bag, and there were lots of Transformers 2 toys, none of which I have an interest in.
But this got me to thinkin' -- what is the point of "release dates", and why are they so strict about them? I mean, my local WM practically had the toys out there for anyone to grab, yet I'll bet if I tried to buy one, they wouldn't let me do it. I know that Lucas is all freakazoid about release dates for his precious plastic. It was funny, because I actually went to WM the night the clone wars stuff came out, and it was all still there the following week. There were a whole 4 people, myself included, there.
So this got me to thinkin' about the Joe stuff. Hasbro says that whether they release further modern era stuff depends on the success of the movie line, but they are already screwing themselves over by making a release date in July. Do you think the guys in China that sell their $231 Resolute Snake Eyes and ROC Flash figures are gonna give their profits to Hasbro? Do you even think they purchased them from Hasbro? (I'm actually asking, because I don't know how they got them.) Since the 25th line seemed to do well, why wouldn't they think any successive lines would do well? I mean, if folks are gobbling up ROC stuff off ebay, wouldn't Hasbro want to reap those profits?

Hasbro can say what they want, but they know future Joe stuff is going to do well. I think it's more of a strategy to get us to buy the ROC stuff, which I think a lot of people are going to do. I haven't seen a ton of the ROC stuff I'm interested in (except for the target exclusive Eel with vehicle, and maybe cover girl), but if some of the resolute stuff ends up in there I'll be all over that.
(Especially since I've started army building the resolute troopers).
as far as the TF2 stuff goes, I think I might get the Bumblebee with Sam combo depending on what the toy looks like in person. Bumblebee was awesome in the first movie and I think the idea of having a figure that fits in the transformer while in vehicle mode sounds cool. But I'll have to wait and see it in person.

I see what you're saying but in the grand scheme of things, Hasbro isn't overly concerned with someone in China making $231 off their product. As far as big business is concerned, stealing is inevitable and in the grand scheme of things, $231 is chump change (for Hasbro). Release dates are a way of building hype for their products just as movie studios gives the OK for a 'midnight movie' opening. It's just another way of generating excitement and making it an 'event'.

Back in the day, it was meant to keep the new stuff "secret". With sites like this one and others.......nothing is a surprise anymore.

I think it is kind of strange, particularly the way stores could be fined for early Star Wars releases. I think George spoiled those films just fine on his own.
I think perhaps with the huge amount of product, this ensures that the retailer neatly places all of the stuff on display in one sudden, unified attack on consumers, rather than lazily slipping out whatever comes in first, then squeezing in stuff as it comes in.
The toy launch date probably coincides with the aggressive tv and print add for the film.
So, it probably has alot to do with merchandising, in addition to anticipation, generating an instant solid explosion of exposure for the brand. Maybe?

Hasbro wants to see how the stuff will sell within a certain amount of time , just like a movie takes a Weekend total on howmuch it's made .... that's one reason why they want to have a set Release date ..... in addition , they know that alot of Collectors out there are online and are waiting to get there hands on them , so they have a set date sothat Everyone paying attention to will rush to the stores ...
You know what i mean .

There is no point, just like theres no point in spending $200+ on a $7 dollar figure that will get released in a couple of months. Infact thats just mind boggling that people waste money like that. Anyrate, I'll go to the stores the day these get released to pick up a few movie figs like destro, stormshadow, baroness, and maybe another one or two if they look cool, then i'll hunt for resolute and classic fig repaints that have nothing to do with the movie.

Its also a way retailers can properly prepare for the new items. They obviously wont purchase any of whichever line after X date if they move X amount a week.

with music itz pretty much illegal to sell things before a release date.
when I worked at Tower, occasionally a new release would slip through
the release date crack by like a week... usually a title we only ordered
like five copies of and they arrived early or got misplaced. Then we'd
get a call from corporate and then from the distributor, if not the label.
it was serious.
not sure how that works with toys. with music sales... itz tied into
royalties and airplay etc etc etc...
if I had to guess, (mind you, I'm just guessing)...
the overall gross of a major franchise (like Transformers)
might be sensitive to toy release dates. what good is hype if
it doesn't translate into gross profit and stocks etc.
