I recently acquired both these figures from an overseas source. At first I thought they both were missing paint apps, but closer inspection revealed these might simply be variants.
The first figure is the cancelled arctic Cobra Commander figure (picture #1). For those of you that don't know, he was supposed to come with an arctic Scarlett in a 25th comic pack, but it was cancelled because of ROC. The figure is not just lacking the blue cobra sigil on its chest, but the hands are different than other specimens of this figure. Instead of being molded in black, this particular figure has hands molded in white plastic and painted over in black (in picture #2 you can see the unpainted end of the hand). The prototype of this figure also has white hands. The comic book that was supposed to come with these figures shows Cobra Commander having a red sigil on his chest so maybe this figure was an early run and they decided against the red sigil before it was applied. The figure is otherwise production-level (it is not hand painted), with Hasbro markings. The second figure is the cancelled Snake Eyes figure (also from a comic pack near the end of the 25th run) that eventually became POC's "Temple Guardian" Snake Eyes (picture #3). My figure is lacking the ninja sigil on the chest armor (this chest armor should look exactly like the training Storm Shadow figure that came with Tunnel Rat in a released 25th comic pack. What is interesting about this figure is that it has an extra paint application that other specimens of this figure do not have, namely the straps on the lower leg armor are painted (picture #4). I have found no other figures using this mold with this paint application, including the cancelled Budo (a figure I unfortunately don't have). This figure is also a production-level figure (non hand painted). The seller also had a rare cancelled Duke in alternate colors and the brown variant of arctic Scarlett which a friend of mine got (the brown version interestingly enough must have been the first version, since the peg holes are still in the figure's heels like the 25th Lady Jaye where Hasbro used the legs. The green arctic Scarlett (at least mine) has the peg holes moved to the center of the underside of the foot so she can fit on the skis she came with). |

I'm going to go out on a limb and say due to the very nature of Pre-production samples and prototypes, they inherently can't be variants. Prototypes and PP's go through various stages before the finished product is finalized. These would be merely prototypes or PP's, but not variants.

Regardless of what they are, I'd be happy to have those in my collection. Nice addition!

If the figure is ultimately produced close to how it was first designed, I refer to the non released version as a "preproduction version", even if the figure was cancelled and released much later in time. Examples of this that I have are the Resolute Destro, Resolute Roadblock, and 50th Arctic BAT. These were all cancelled at some point (the first 2 in the 25th line, the BAT was supposed to be in the 30th line), then released (Destro and RB in a 7 pack, the BAT in the 50th line). All three of the preproduction versions are significantly different that the released figures, but are close enough that the connection is obvious. With the cancelled blue Resolute Baroness, the color scheme is completely different than the one released in the 7 pack, so I consider the blue version simply as a cancelled figure (the same logic applies to the training SE/Temple Guardian SE here). Thanks! |

I'm with backhawkdown. They aren't really variants but more to do with what stage of production the figure got to. I see a lot of other ones that have slightly different paint on them from the overseas sellers. 50th Spirit was one of them. You can different pre-production ones of him.
Regardless, nice catch. I wish I had some of those.

Just more preproduction prototypes. I've seen variations of variations.. all in all, they are all prototypes and due to them not being released.. who is to say what the final version would have actually looked like.

If you can find the connections, there are preproduction figures out there.
I had a guy, but he is no longer around. So I haven't been able to find any of these that aren't going for way more than they are worth.

Pretty cool to own! That SE looks hand-painted....maybe hand-painted is part of the definition of pre-production??
