Hi guys, as the thread we discussed about what we do when we first see a GI Joe 25th Anniversary figure and myself and a few pointed out people who fold or damage the cards, so other collectors/toy hunters get damanged cards...
Well, was at one of the Targets in Fresno and was stoked to see Wave 4's at the store. Problem... a common problem here in California since toy collecting is competitive but it's really getting bad over here. People are folding and scrunching the cards or scratching out the faces of the people on the cards. It ticks me off that when people who love the series find something, some piece of crap is messing up the cards. Here is an example of how the wave 4's were at one Target. I ended up buying the Roadblock but still...not cool that there are collectors or people doing this: It's bad that a lot of us are having a hard time to finding these and when we do, people are doing this over here.

You're sure someone did this intentionally? Looks like it just got scrunched between a couple big boxes or something. Got any pics of scratched out faces?

I wish I could catch one of these pieces of garbage in the act. Really, what kind of non-life must one possess to do this? Collecting these new joes here in the bay area, california is about as easy as collecting moon rocks.

Hi thunderdan - This happens a lot with GI Joe's, Star Wars, Transformers and former Toy Biz Marvel-related stuff in my area. Also, because my friends stock them at Target and Wal-Mart and are collectors and complain that people are doing this.
But I'm seeing folded cards and faces getting scratched on the cards, it sucks!

Start a loose collection, or purchase online. I wouldnt buy anything in that shape without asking a manager to lower the price. If they refuse, I would probably just drop it in front of them and continue to walk out of the store.

Do we have any idea what motivates these guys to deface these collectibles like this?
I was told that Target won't give you any more than 10% off anything because they can return packages that are damaged to the manufacturer and get credit. I don't know how that jives with their awesome clearance prices, but that is what they told me. I suppose it is so that people don't just bang up a box or card and then check it out at half price or something. I've never tried to buy something damaged at Walmart (or at least never took it to customer service - it wouldn't be worth the half hour wait). But maybe these tools don't know that and are trying to get a discount by trashing stuff... Maybe? |

That's one possible theory. I also suspect that it's a tactic used by people who want to purchase something but can't buy it right away, especially with lay-away a thing of the past. If I'm a loose figure collector, I can bend the card, make it less desirable to other collectors and more importantly scalpers, and come back later with a better chance of finding it again. Not my method though, I just pee on what I want. Then I set the shelf on fire once I've gotten my fill.
This could also just be an unfortunate accident. I suspect that many of the "small bends in corners" or "slight bubble markings" are the result of a card being dropped on tile during the daily shelf life at a store. Granted this looks kinda deliberate but it is just cardboard. For example, I received a substandard Zartan from BBTS one time that featured the printed on color change logo, no color change neck, and a nice u-turn half-way down the card. I'm pretty sure Joel and his staff didn't bend it intentionally, but why it had to be that figure among the dozen or so that came in my order... Last edited by Hicks_Royel; 01-20-2008 at 11:14 PM.. |

I drove 30 miles to Daytona once on a tip, and found a Serpentor that looked like that Roadblock above. I was pissed. Still, I think it's better that everyone gets their share. If I find imperfect cards on figures I don't have, I'm still pleased as punch because I'm going to open them (toys is for playin' with) BUT... I also like to keep one of each in prisitine condition on my walls. This is secondary though. Not that I don't sympathize. I just think that everyone deserves a fair shot and Hasbro's playing all ends against the middle with retailers.

These guys are douchebags. I open all my Joes, but I keep the cardbacks intact by cutting open the bubbles 3/4 of the way around, with an exacto knife. That way they can be displayed on the cards or loose. So, despite really being a loose collector, I want the cards to be in good shape. But, I'm willing to bet that these guys are doing it because they've seen the scalpers at the flea market or the prices on ebay. They might think they're doing someone a favor by preventing the scalpers from buying the figure, but they're really just screwing a carded collector out of their find.
As for accidents, this is no accident. When I found wave 3 someone had bent all the Fireflys and Zartans, but none of the Stalkers or Shipwrecks had a scratch on them. Last edited by Devil King; 01-21-2008 at 12:08 AM.. |

Wow, you are really close to my area. Luckily, I haven't seen any of this happening here. There's usually a few slightly damaged cards, but nothing that looks like it was intentional. Sucks that it's happening out there though.
