Nothing goes together like G.I. Joe and sports. Or so you'd think from the last 2 rounds. Because a G.I. Joe line without the Fridge is like a fish without a bicycle. Few figures from the 1980s are as useless and inconsequential to the mythos. General Flagg, on the other hand, is as meaningful to the brand a character can get who wasn't a 1980s figure (but did make it into the o-ring line near the end). Or how about the only alternate costume for the major female Covergirl there was in the ARAH era? Or Golobulus, the star villain of the 1987 movie. Someone to add before we finish the top 20 with only a meager 3 villains so far. And all better than Fridge, who means jack squat to the franchise.

As for Hardball, I'm not sure what would make him look more interesting on the shelf than other 1988 figures Hydro-Viper, Astro-Viper, Toxo-Viper or Budo. In fact, I'm sure he would look infinitely more boring. But, hey, who wouldn't want the next FSS filled with plain-looking, unmemorable Joes instead of awesomely designed Cobras who are as iconic as any still unremade ARAH figures?

Through 1986, the Joe team had 9.23% black characters (that does include Fridge). The U.S. population had 11.7% blacks. So that was pretty much on par with what the population was. They had room to add 1 more black without going over the real population percentage.
Now, the actual military may have had a higher % of blacks, I don't know, but these toys were being sold to all U.S. children, so they had to go by who was going to be buying the toys. As for other minorities, Joe actually seems to have a disproportionate amount of redheads. No wonder Sunbow changed Ace's hair color to black. One group definitely underrepresented in Joe is women, and we still haven't had one female character win this poll. Munitia should be in by now. Any potential winner next poll would be an improvement from the last several rounds, except Roadblock or Sub-Zero. So Sub-Zero's probably got this one locked up. Since you brought math into this, black/African Americans make up 16.2% of the current US military, so GI Joe is significantly lower. Not that I think they need to match these kind of real world numbers in a toy line, it was just one of the reasons I was giving you why someone might not think Hardball would look boring on their shelf. I also really like his gun and his blue baseball hat.
By the way I plan to vote for Sub Zero next round if Hardball wins or ties. Also by the way, females make up 16% of the military according to that same report. Without counting the percent of female figures in GI Joe, I bet you are right about them being underrepresented.

Especially if you go past 1987, because they really cut down on females after that. I can think of a good amount of black characters past that point though.
I brought up the percentages because you said you don't think there are enough black or minority Joes. I don't know how you define "enough" without comparing it to the amount that should naturally occur in the population. The % of blacks in the military was apparently significantly higher in 1985, more like 27%. But, again, this isn't a movie or a TV show. It was a toy line sold to kids which needed to reflect the demographics of the target market. Plus, Joe being a specialized unit, it would probably make more sense to look at the ethnic makeup of the special forces, not the general military, as a benchmark. "Of the 8,775 Army, Navy and Air Force commandos, 1,180 are classified as minorities. Less than 15 percent of the Army's Special Forces and Rangers personnel are soldiers of color, compared with about 40 percent of the entire Army. About 11 percent of Navy SEALs, whose headquarters are in Coronado, are minorities." And that's "people of color." Of the individual special units, blacks make up about 2-5% of each. Notwithstanding the extremely low number of blacks in special forces, there are as yet no racial quotas Last edited by JediJones; 07-06-2015 at 05:11 PM.. |

Again, I'm not really that concerned with the actual numbers. My original comment was really more about my own preferences for how diverse my shelf looks, but I'll admit that wasn't very clear at the time. You mentioned you didn't know the percent of blacks in the military so I told you. If you want to switch and now only look at numbers from the special forces my guess is you'll end up hurting your own argument that there should be more women (which I agree with, from 1988-1994 ninja Scarlet was the only female figure).

G.I. Joe seems to exist somewhere between special forces and regular military. Obviously it was about forming a team of different specialists from the beginning. I don't know if the armed forces really forms those kinds of teams at all. But just looking at the specialties of the Joe characters, they seem to be a mix from both basic forces and special forces, and maybe even CIA. Remember, nobody really knows who Chuckles works for.
So if you had to do a demographic percentage it would probably be somewhere between the regular and special forces. The Latinos seem like they're in a less representative proportion than blacks, especially by modern numbers, but I do get confused on which ones are Latino and aren't. What the team is really missing is Indians and Arabs. Bottom line for me, I never felt blacks inparticular were underrepresented in Joe. They seemed to be about the right number. It didn't hurt either that many were major characters and got multiple versions made. Last edited by JediJones; 07-06-2015 at 07:01 PM.. |

I'd love more female figures, but Blonde Cover Girl isn't one I'd vote for. Neither is Sunbow Daina. I already have a custom Mayday. Munitia is a character I like, but I already have the parts to make a custom of her, so that's a wasted vote for me. Luckily, the Club has been making female figures in Hasbro's stead. I just don't want to pay $40-$90 for them.
