Interestingly, the top 6 in this sample poll match the top 6 females in beef's character poll. That vindicates the idea to me that the multi-choice polls work to rank popularity for at least the top 5 or 6 slots. So I will probably stick with the plan to start counting the top 5 winners in multi-choice polls after we get the top 10 in the bag with single winners.
We have an average of 1.7 choices being selected by each person, so there appear to be a lot who limit their choice to 1 pick and maybe not many more who pick more than 2. Kind of surprising to me with that fairly limited use of the multi-choice option the ranking still came out as expected for so many slots but it's good to see. Here's why in a multi-choice poll you might want to vote for more than just your favorite choice. It can be a defensive move. If a poll had Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow and Ice Cream Soldier in it, and you wanted Storm Shadow to win, you might still vote for Snake-Eyes as a multiple choice because you really want Ice Cream Soldier to lose. If you didn't vote for SE too, the poll might end with SE 10, ICS 10 and SS 9. That means ICS and SE tie and both rank in the poll.
If you had used your multi-choice vote to add on SE, the vote changes to SE 11, ICS 10 and SS 9. SS would've lost either way, but you ensured a win for SE and kept ICS out. So, essentially, if keeping a hated figure out is more important to you in that poll than helping one you love to win, you might vote for everybody but that hated figure so anyone he might've tied with he would lose to instead. During the Dee-Jay wars, everybody who hated the Deej might've voted for all other 9 choices just to keep him out. And there is no reason why a poll should only record the positive vibes for who you love. Accounting for the negative vibes of who you hate is just as valid. In a presidential election, aren't you often even more worried about keeping out the one you hate than helping the one you love win? ) But to each his own. Nothing wrong with your philosophy, I just think its a strong example of how our approaches may differ and thus why we may sometimes approach these polls using different strategies and desiring different outcomes.

It's a stretch to call that an "approach" at all and it's certainly not my approach. It's an extreme example to indicate how the multi-choice voting can be used. I wouldn't expect that to be anyone's overriding "approach." The truth is that you ARE voting against characters when you vote whether you choose to see it that way or not. A vote for 1 is a vote against 9. The multi-choice poll is actually more positive. In my example you get to vote FOR 9 instead of against 9. That's an extreme example. In other examples, someone may want to vote for 5 and against 5, or any combination they choose. So if you like positivity, a multi-choice poll is much more positive than a single-choice poll. You aren't forced to vote against 9. You can vote against much less. If positivity is your philosophy, you should love the multi-choice format.
The only major difference I have with any other polls has nothing to do with the voting format and everything to do with the nomination format. Letting the same person add on noms for the same character is severely destructive to the accuracy of the results. It's the same thing as someone stuffing the ballot box for their pet candidate in an election. Current noms: Hovercraft (Killer W.H.A.L.E.) 19 U.S.S. Flagg 16 Terror Drome 15 Tomahawk 15 Rattler 14 Combat Jet Skystriker (XP-14F) 12 H.I.S.S. Either way the true goal is for fun since our sample size is tiny.
Amusing to me is the results of this test/setup poll. I wanted to do the greatest female poll a long time ago with many of these same choices. Outside of the top six I don't think it matters but I would have envisioned Cover-Girl doing much better. I guess trends change or not many would be voters are stopping by since the thread title is slightly misleading. I personally didn't vote for Cover-Girl because I had picked like 5 already and picking more just seems pointless. I should have picked 8. I wasn't taking it seriously. Multiple choice polls definitely require a different approach. Who are all the females you could include in a poll aside from the top six? This is how I would break it down: With figures : From the comics w/o figures: From the cartoons w/o figures:

But then why have tie-breaking polls? If X and Y tie in a poll, then the voting group obviously prefers those two choices more. But having a tie-breaking poll then forces people to choose one of two vehicles that received an equal number of votes in a previous poll, forcing them to choose one over another or else not vote at all. If you're concerned less about rank and more about general popularity or strategizing about how to keep an undesirable character out, why not let ties stand?

Ranked voting has its own flaw. If you like two or more choices equally, you still have to put one over the other, which makes your vote inaccurate to how you feel. Scored/graded voting would be ideal, rating every choice on a scale of 1 to 10. If this software allowed it, that's what I'd do.
The software limits the poll choices to ten but there's no need to impose a limit on the nomination system if you do want to run a poll like what you just mentioned above. Example: Have people post a list of vehicles with a rank. If they have three number one faves, those three would get the same top score. And they can nominate as many as they want. (Side note: Appealing to what others have done in their polls doesn't make your argument for not doing this stronger.) It might look like the following: 10) Rattler 10) WHALE 10) FANG 9) VAMP 8) MOBAT 7) Skystriker 6) Tomahawk 6) Dragonfly 5) Snowcat 5) Wolf 4) Flagg 3) Terrodrome 2) Joe HQ 1) Jungle Humvee Then you count the total points for each vehicle among all the posters. The ten with the most points go into the poll, even though the winner is already clear given the nomination system, so a vote becomes unnecessary at that point, and also less fun. This way you're not alloting one point for each nomination a person makes, which makes all of his/her nominations appear equal. Quote:
Nothing you've said so far comes close to swaying me away from the PAC RAT argument, which you didn't even address. Multi-choice voting is there more than anything else to prevent vote-splitting among choices that people would consider very similar in quality. We could get to the point where we have multiple repaints of the same vehicle in the poll (all 3 Humvees?), so it could come up many times in this poll, much moreso than it does in the character polls.

The new nomination is partly for expediency. It gets time-consuming checking people's past noms for repeats and it would also be time-consuming counting up scores of every vehicle. So some perfection has to be given up for efficiency. Ultimately the nomination system does not have to be quite as rigorous as the poll itself because the poll is the final determinant. As long as it's a system that won't allow duds to accumulate in the poll.
Yes, I'm assuming many people may like all PAC-RATs equally. Or all 3 colors of Humvee. If the vote is split between them, they are likely to lose for a while and win much later than they would've if people were allowed to multi-vote each. The tie breaking is hardly a big issue since they will still be on the poll in consecutive positions. In beef's poll he showed ties alphabetically, which obviously is not a meaningful way of doing it. Giving people a chance to break the tie is still meaningful here because in the multi-choice poll, some people may not have voted for either one of them, to keep the advantage for their choice which didn't win.
