I've had what one would call personal and/or holy grail pieces come and go over my lifetime, but I'm thankful to say that one of my favorite pieces is still in my possession.
I think it's reasonable to assume that you all are aware of my fascination with the Iron Grenadiers. I fell in love with the concept thanks to the original story arc that introduced the faction and have been hooked ever since. I've been lucky enough to own every version of Destro imaginable at one point or another (even PDD, w00t), but the piece below (we'd get to it if I'd ever stfu) is special to me as it was given to me by a very good friend of mine, former "regular," TheWyseOne. It's a MOSC Iron Grenadier, straight from the case in 88 to his storage, from his storage to my hand. Still has the hang tag and everything. Sure, this is an easily obtainable piece and doubtful that it's high on anyone's "must haves", but this piece has stuck with me longer than anything & everything else in my collection.

Been trying to get all or most of the convention exclusives in recent years, since I missed the first 8 or so years. The club's archive sale helped me. I still needed the giveaway Jungle Panther Tank and the blue HISS II. The Jungle Panther Tank almost never comes up for sale anywhere for any price. I think I missed just one on eBay last year. Finally one came up this week and I won it for under $100 shipped.
I missed a loose HISS II a few months ago for a good price. It's always up for sale for an exorbitant price. But one came up for $125 this week in sealed bag and I went for it. More than what the loose one went for but half of what is usually being asked. I also got the Crimson Strike HISS from the first convention recently. I'm definitely narrowing down the convention items I still need to get to a much smaller list. I know I need the Renegades 3-pack, the giveaway Headhunter Driver, the giveaway VAMP, the IG Mech, Steel Brigade Skyhawk and the blue Hydrofoil now. Not too much more than that I think. Wow! The most I think over ever spent on a figure was $80,and that was for NF lady Jaye...which I don't regret, cause she's a really nice figure. Then my Zarana..I think I paid $70 for her. I had a Daina, but got her for $60 which was insane for me back then! but she hit almost $200 for a little bit on eBay,and I could no longer justify owning something worth that much when I can make one myself for under $20 of I wanted. I still might, but I've over used the head already as it is on other customs.

its great to see what everyone considers their personal grail items as i think we can all agree on the big items.
like for me i never really wanted the flagg as a kid as it would have taken up all my play space in the tiny house i grew up in. now that i own my own house and have more then enought space id like to add it to my collection at some point and show case it in my gi joe room. for me personally just off the top of my head would be the 1983 gliders. my cuz had them when we were kids and they were such crap i was like eh i will save my money and get something else. now i want them lol and the dessert humvee, passed on it on the shelf now i have been wanting it for a few years and can never find one. i notice no one mentioned the general. its a big playset, could be considered a holy grail item bc of that yet i never see anyone mention it or admit to having it. i remembered as a kid seeing it in the stores and being like heck no i aint buying that lame thing. still dont want it but i did get one mostly complete in a lot i got off ebay a few years back. added some parts to it from my fodder bin. i think its about 80% complete. no rush to finish it off, it sitting in a box i have yet to unpack but being a completist it will make its way on display Last edited by Voice of Reason; 02-27-2015 at 11:22 PM.. |

Out of the big 3, I still need a terrordrome. Most of my grail are readily available, but pricey. The big one on my list is an original Pimp Daddy Destro. Other than that, I'd like to have an original Letal, Kangor, and both Cobra Mortal figures. They're out there, just really expensive. As far as vehicles or playsets, the blue S.N.A.K.E. Armor and the red Action Force escape armour are on the list. There is also a funskool snake armor out there as well. Red Laser, Red Jackal and a robo skull would round out the list of grails.

Original art from Gonzo studios. Be it a file (apparently everything was done on the computer) or a commission by one of the artists.
That is just one of my grails.

My Major Grail was the 1986 Tomahawk. I got one as a kid and it was broke shortly after and my parents tossed it shortly after that. It was my absolute favorite vehicle to date. I looked for another and was not able to find one until i was in high school and ebay just got its start. I own about 9 all together now (counting 7 modern). Since then there has not been a piece that has eluded me long enough to call it a "Grail" I have most that i want already including a TD,USS Flagg, Defiant, Whale. So i guess something like the 1992 Cuda Apc mail away would be the only thing i could think of that would be close.

Probably the only figure I own that would be considered Holy Grail would be '92 recalled Roadblock complete. My mission when I started buying joes from ebay was to get every standard carded figure (complete with all acc's) from '82-'83 to '92. Recalled RB was the hardest to find at a decent price.
FYI 'standard carded figures' did not include sub teams like TF, NF, Sky Patrol, Eco Warriors etc, but after getting all standard carded figures, I have acquired some full sub teams just for fun, namely DEF, Sonic Fighters, Sky Patrol, Ninja Force, BF2000. |
