The premise is correct: It costs money to collect. However, not all of us look at it as an investment like you apparently do. I collect to collect, not just for something to spend on or invest in. The money is gone, I'm not trying to get it back. I don't care what figures come out in the future because I bought what I have for the pleasure it brings me itself and for no other reason. If another, "better" version comes out, well, so what? Maybe I'll buy it, maybe I won't. Maybe the version I have is better for me, regardless of objective valuation. If your top priority is always the next new thing, that's another issue entirely.
Nope. Not as an investment. That would be a terrible choice.I do however look at everything has a price. From the car I drive,to the house I live in I would sell them if the price is right. I'm not going to live forever. I'd rather sell now, then keep them in a drawer till they're worthless is what I'm saying. Never did I say I'd expect to get back what I spent, that's not possible. I would like to get something tho. |

Nothing will be as good? Really? I think you guys are crazy. The gi joe community has set the bar high on quality. If its garbage, it sits on the shelf. Plain and simple. Hasbro bata tested that crap with vehicle drivers in retaliation and realized it wouldn't work with this brand. Now if you take that, the number of other lines that are popping up with very high quality products into consideration. Hasbro is going to have to step thier game up and show everyone who the boss is . Or take thier ball and get off the court.

Funny you mention this as just recently I've been contemplating getting rid of my stuff. I just have no room right now and am tired of paying storage fees. I want to keep most of my Marvel and DC stuff but everything Joe can go, (I've always been into G.I. Joe because of the comics - not the toys). I don't have much of value - it's mostly POC stuff. I do have a Renegades Storm Shadow and a couple of Low-lights though. Moneybags Destro too. I would like someone to just take it all in one shot but I know that's not likely to happen lol. Ideally I'd trade a whack of it for the 2014 Convention Clutch.

Collecting Joe's was never about money for me, it gave me joy and still gives me joy. Until the Joy is gone, I won't sell. And even if it does and the resell value is crap, wouldn't matter to me.

I am always on the fence about getting out. I have not been in my Joe room in months. In fact not really since October of last year. I may pack up everything and just wait and see if the bug bites again. I may just transfer it to the garage and turn my toy room into an office. I deffinetly feel like Im getting closer to the end. Im almost 40 for Petes sake!

In my thinking, looking to the end of something is what you do when you don't like that something.
Sure, Hasbro may eventually stop making toys, but then I'm more interested in what I can do to continue enjoying my hobby beyond that. |

Well if the SW line is any reflection then we are in the phase of high quality which will then be followed by 5x POA again unless you buy the black case 3 3/4" figures.
Look at POTF2 - terrible sculpts for most and basically worthless. I have boxes of MOC POTF2 stuff which can't be sold for the cost of shipping. Then after the EP1 line came out the sculpts improved and continued to improve with each redone character. I don't have a clue to the number of Cantina Han's have been basically been done since 1977 but their are only 2 or 3 worth displaying. I feel the same way with the post o-ring sculpts. I passed on who knows how many redone sculpts of the 25th because they did not look right and then the 30th and POC versions made the others obsolete. As for investing, I plan to study eBay trends and sell what is going to make a decent profit as I downsize my collection(s).

Anyone else thinking of this? If hasbro redesigns today's figures then what? currently the market is good on modern joes, but in the next few years if the line gets a redisign then what? last few days Ive been thinking...there's a lot of things I enjoy, lots of hobbies, and other interests. Maybe it's time to get while the gettings good? I wasn't around in the new sculpt era,but I'm sure it wasn't all that great for the individuals that army built,or had amassed a stout collection only to see newer, nicer versions hit the shelves. Don't get me wrong,I enjoy my collection,BUT I think it's run it's coarse with me,and its time to move on. anyone else feel this way?
If you want to use the money towards other stuff, then yeah I think now if a good time to let your 25th/modern collection go. There's still a lot of interested people out there, for now. |
