I was reading this article G.I. Joe Performed Well During 1st Quarter 2009 - GI Joe News which really shocked me because the 25th line didn't fit into the Hasbro's fanatical devotion with spring loaded weapons and other gimmicks. 25th was hardcore compared to earlier offerings. It was stocked full of army builders. And catered to us adult collectors more then any other line.
Did Hasbro underestimate the power us collectors had with the 25th line? Or did Hasbro total fudge up what they thought kids wanted?

I don't know the reason, but I think that Hasbro is about to drop the ball on keeping the collectors happy. I just say that out of experience with the Transformers movie culminating in Bumblebee sheets and party hats and ice cream bars, but with very few actually cool collector-oriented toys released. I hope I'm wrong, though.

The underestimated the demand for the 25A figures when they were first developing them, but then when they showed them off to retailers the retailers really liked them. so they expanded it. Originally it was going to be two 5 packs and that's it...so Hasbro's expectations were clearly VERY low.
Don't confuse "performing well" or "exceeding expectations" with "being the hottest thing on the toy market" or anything of the sort, though. Or take it as some automatic proof that the collector market is a great deal larger than Hasbro believes it to be.

I would love to know if Hasbro's estimation that collectors are such a tiny percentage of toy-buyers is true, but I'm not sure how that could even be measured. How the heck do they know? Are kids really that into Old School G.I. Joe, Transformers Universe (and Animated, for that matter) and all kinds of crazy Star Wars variants? Are these really still some of the hottest properties for kids? Aside from the Transformers movie, I don't think Transformers are anywhere near as highly-regarded by kids as they were in the 1980s. And do most kids currently even know what G.I. Joe is?
Someone's buying up all these toys. My guess is that collectors make up a larger percentage of Hasbro's customers base than they think.

All I know is that around where I live Hasbro stuff sells out all the time. Transformers, Joe, Star Wars, Marvel, Ironman, Mighty Muggs, everything. I can't say that it's just collectors, because I see kids looking at these toys too. More responsible buying from stores also leads to a more accurate demand to Hasbro, and them not overproducing and having toys sitting in their warehouse. Online shopping has also helped Hasbro because there are now so many more retailers purchasing their product.

Hasbro didn't have low expectations, retailers did. Hasbro knew they had a good line and that's whey they went from making the 2 box sets, to making the first waves of single carded figures. We were only supposed to get 25 figures at first. Retailers were still burned from all the other Joe stuff, they had sitting on the shelves. Retailers undersestimated the demand and that's why it took so long for stores to catch up with the demand, cuz they were placing small orders and Hasbro is gonna produce what's ordered.

The only way they can figure out how many buyers are kids is to make them more aimed towards kids and see if sales go up or down. Thus the spring loaded weapons est.
