I'm buying most of the current Transformers releases, and am quite happy to do so, as we're getting a wide variety of very good products.
I do think that GIJoe is getting a bit short-changed, but better some of something than all of nothing, eh? And what little is coming does look pretty good. With any luck, they'll sell well, and Hasbro will be encouraged with the next movie line to give the fandom some nice things. |

GI Joe hasn't done that, if anything, corporate and retailer politics have done much to prevent the brand from cultivating much of anything over the past 10 years. Transformers see all that high end collector stuff because the market has proven willing and able to support that product. GI Joe is barely supporting a mass retail line. But remember back in the early 2000s, GI Joe was seeing product FAR more in line with collector wants than Transformers were, and over the years Hasbro has given Joe a LOT of extra attention and collector focus when they didn't need to.

I agree, the TF movies and their toys have done a lot to keep the TF brand alive. They've been such a success they've made 4! Not only that, but there have been successful cartoons with their respective toy lines in between. GI Joe movies have made little fans, particularly the first. But, Hasbro did not keep them interested in between movies. Renegades did not last, and it's toylines was released too late, incomplete, and without vehicles.
I'm not happy at the state of the Joe brand, but I'm not surprised. I am thankful that Hasbro is releasing Heat Viper and rereleasing Night Viper. |

Yeah, as already stated by others, the dollars just aren't there with G.I. Joe like they are with TransFormers. Not only is the adult collector base for TF larger, but kids are into it too, and that's what really matters to Hasbro. They're a corporation, they go where the dollars are. It's actually remarkable they keep trying to find a viable niche for G.I. Joe in the mainstream. That's why I don't feel Hasbro deserves the outrage often directed at them by G.I. Joe fans. Have they made mistakes? Plenty of them, but they've also done a lot right by us. Hopefully, they can find the dollars/value proposition to create a unified strategy for the brand that finds real mainstream success, but if the market isn't there and the kiddies aren't interested, get used to G.I. Joe as a smaller property in the marketplace.

As a collector of Joes and TFs, it saddens me to see the sort of effort that Hasbro has put out for the 50th anniversary vs what they have been doing for the 30th anniversary.
For the TF they are bringing back figures from multiple lines, new figures, complete retooling of popular figures. There are multiple releases every month. Its a constant barrage of figure after figure. And what do we have for Joes, bunch of repaints, mashed up together in 2 packs and 3 packs, a handful of repainted vehicles. Literally if you had hands the size of Yao Ming, you could hold everything that is revealed for the 50th anniversary in two hands!! |

The brand managers had little to do with it: Transformers (especially since the first feature film) have frankly been a magnitude more successful than GI Joe, cultivating fans across multiple generations (there are guys on the boards today for whom freakin' ARMADA was their first TF series!).

Well, I really doubt Hasbro said. Let's not do much, barely scrape something together and throw it out.
Chances are, most retailers have dropped support of joes. This we know. Tru was probably the only people to take the offerings, and probably picked the ones shown and who knows what was turned down.

Transformers has a 4th live action movie coming and is one of Hasbro's top brands. It was already successful prior to the 2007 movie but the movies made it even moreso. In addition it has international appeal to the point where even china is getting their own official transformers cartoon later this year. Playdoh was more successful to Hasbro in recent years than GIJOE was if that tells you anything. Also the guy in charge of Transformers Generations is apparently a diehard G1 fan hence the amount of new Generations figures based on G1 characters.

I couldn't agree more. Even when the Bayformers started I really could not get past the character designs. Now I love the figure we are getting a G1 style Jetfire as well as Readbuster. As for GI Joe looking forward to most of the vehicles. I always loved the vamp II and the fact its coming with the NLC is cool too. In regards to a GI Joe VS TF set. I think Hasbro has ran out of ideas.

Transformers makes $$$. Joe does not.
And to be fair, some of the "Thrilling 30th" items for the TF 30th anniversary have been lame. For example, they counted the US SDCC release and an Asian exclusive release of Generations Metroplex as two different items.
