Tonight I was corresponding via email with my buddy Bill (Prowl-Ar on Joe Battlelines and Minimates Multiverse), and he wrote something interesting regarding his MiniMates collection and Sigma 6:
On another note I was doing a quick inventory and I was surprised to discover that I have 384 (photographed) unique customs and more than enough figures ready to photograph or in my WIP slots that by the end of the year I'll have over 400. And at this revelation all I could think was "Man, Hasbro really put a bullet in butt cheek when they canceled S6 figures". If they hadn't I wouldn't have gotten into minimates and all of my disposable income would have gone to them rather than DST. The following is adapted from my response to Bill. My Sigma 6 collection topped out at about 80 figures, I think. I don't even have half that now, and indeed I recently set aside several figures and kitbashes to possibly sell or trade. However… One of those kitbashes struck me as somewhat awkward-looking from the perspective of a perspective buyer, and so I swapped out some parts to make him look more mainstream-palatable. And then I switched some gear on another one, and before I knew it I was performing mild tweaks on a few old kitbashes. It wasn't enough to reignite the old mania, necessarily, although taking one of those updated kitbashes outside for a photo shoot, and then happening to choose as my setting a bunch of rocks and a bigass stream and a bunch of green moss, plausibly serving as a new version of the creeks I used for my first-ever toy photos (of Sigmas, naturally)… Man, I had forgotten how amazing those toys look against a backdrop of water and green rocks. The Year is 1988 by Geek Creek, on Flickr Still, it's hard to predict how I'd react if they resurrected the Sigma 6 property today (notwithstanding the fact that a Sigma figure would probably cost ten thousand dollars in today's delightful economy). It was my favorite toy series of all time, and now I feel like I'm keeping them out of a sense of misplaced nostalgia, and because I know I'd probably regret it someday if I got rid of them. Alright, Tankers, obviously the flippant answer for most of you to the question "What if Sigma 6 was still representing the brand?" would be "I wouldn't be collecting!", but I'd like to see this turn into a real discussion, and as such I'll offer some related questions: If the Modern Era comes to an end soon, how long do you anticipate continuing to collect fodder and fill gaps in your collection? What previous eras of Joe (and/or which other toy series) have you stopped collecting, and why? If Hasbro put the entire G.I. Joe brand on an indefinite hiatus tomorrow (which always seems a plausible threat), what would become of your toy hobby? |

Well, if the 'bro never made the 25th figures, or any modern era figs for that matter, I'd probably have eventually gotten into collecting some of the arah stuff that I liked as a kid (which I have done and now am finished). I would likely have gotten into customizing them at some point, but likely not to the extent I have with the modern era figures.
I own not one single S6 figure, so if that line didn't end or was resurrected, I'd likely be out, although the consumer bug in me would maybe end up buying some. I don't hate S6, but it's just not as aesthetically pleasing to me as the 3 3/4 - 4" figs are. I tend to cap off my figure collections at 6". There are some aspects I like about s6 though, like the interchangeability of the weapons, the footlocker things, and even the dog tags! There is nothing that I have fully stopped collecting. I pick up bits and pieces of things as they are released, spending on: 1)nostalgia factor; 2) custom potential; and 3) aesthetics (do I think it's cool or will it fit into the vision of my collection?). If Joe ended tomorrow, I'd be fine, because I have all the figures I really want. If SW ended tomorrow, I'd be a little upset, because I have been suckered into the 6" figs, and there are still some of my favorite characters is like to see made. I'm basically limiting my collection by the amount of shelf space I have, so if in run outta shelf space, I'll be done. Right now, I'm trying to finish up customs and displays in my toy room, so I can just meander in there and look at the collection, like a museum. I look at these as art; as artifacts; as the history of myself. Not only do I look at them and think back to when I was a child, but I also look at some of them and remember what I was going through in life when I bought them, or for customs, when I created them. What would I do with my time and money if I didn't collect toys? I'd probably spend more time andoney on guitars. I've also recently endeavored to try and collect every Ozzie Smith baseball card ever manufactured. He was my favorite player, and I don't collect baseball cards anymore, haven't in about 23 or so years, but this just seemed like a time to try and get all of his cards. It's become a little pricier and a little more difficult than I anticipated. But there's something fun about it as well.

I had just graduated and had a decent job. I remember seeing them in Walmart one day and flipping my lid. The first one I bought was hooded cobra commander. I can remember sitting on HTS buying them as soon as they came in stock. I guess I was f5ing HTS before the whole SDCC madness. |

Sigma 6 and not the 25th anniversary got me back into collecting Joes so I will always love Sigma 6. However, I have size constraints and Sigmas unfortunately take up a lot of space.
I was massively disappointed by the launch of the 25th line because of the articulation issues like diaper crotch and Duke arms. With POC and Renegades I felt that the 3 3/4 Joe was back on top. |

I think this would apply to me as well. If it wasn't for the 25th line, I would not have considered buying new GI Joes at all. Sigma 6 did not appeal to me because it was so weird to me despite the cool vehicle designs.

If not for the 25th figures I'd have A Real American Hero figures on display instead. Just didn't feel like I had enough room for both so since the 25th brought so many figures up to a modern standard with more articulation I had to with displaying 25th over vintage. Of course I still have old stuff stored back.
Normally I'm not a big fan of larger figures, but darn if I didn't go crazy for Sigma Six. Maybe I'm weird but I just really liked the design, and they were tough little figures so no holding your breath when the cat went all Godzilla on your collection. It also felt like a truly new look for GI Joe and Cobra while still having that Joe and Cobra feel. I guess I'm just more open to new ideas for GI Joe because I've tried getting into the Kreo stuff but my desire for the little guys seems to be stronger than Hasbro's desire to get them into someone's hands. At least Sigma Six could be found almost anywhere while Kreo means a special trip or random blind packs instead of getting to use the codes. I'm sure if Hasbro tries something different with GI Joe I'll be there. Well unless it's like America's Elite, even I've got my limits to change. |

I also probably wouldn't be here without the 25th/ME line. But I'm sure I wouldn't be several thousand dollars richer as I would have found something else to spend my cash on. The 25th line sparked my interest in restoring my ARAH collection as well.
As for Sigma 6, I never bought any, but found them to be cool. They just weren't my thing I guess.

i had just ''rediscovered'' joe with the DTC line in 05-06, and was buying them for my sons. i really had no interest in becoming a collector, but still had my childhood ARAH collection i was going to give to them.
the 25th line was more of an escape for me, because my kids lost interest in them long before the RoC movie came out. i really dont know what i would be doing (or had done) without the last 6 years of joes...i know i would have still blown my money elsewhere, so who knows?

Personally, I really don't know where I'd be. After ARAH, I dropped off collecting because it was around the time I graduated, and enlisted in the Army the following year (1995). I didn't even realize they stopped making Joes that year, and missed out on Sgt. Savage and Extreme, which I think I would have passed on because of the size. Around the time Star Wars resurfaced after the Shadows of the Empire line came out I briefly collected them, but lost interest pretty quickly because of the limited articulation. I started looking at 1:6 scale figures after this point but never pursued a collection. They're amazingly detailed and versatile, but expensive and take up a lot of room. Then I discovered BBI's Elite Force 1:18 scale line, and was really into them. I still enjoy this line, as the vehicles are amazing and the figures look nice with the new-style Joes. Around the time Elite Force started to fizzle out was when the 25th line came out. This really got me back into Joes. I always liked them, and had considered rebuilding an ARAH collection during the periods I didn't have any other active collecting pursuits, and they were my favorite toys growing up.
I admit that the new 25th line has been as fun to collect as well as frustrating. Especially the attention to detail that the newer sculpts have. But rising prices and availability problems have definitely taken a some of the enjoyment out of collecting. I never had any Sigma 6 figures, though they do look cool. Again, I think that for myself, I pretty much will just stay a 1:18 scale collector. That's where my collection sits. Even if I were to still go back to ARAH collecting, they can still fit pretty nicely with the other vehicles and accessories I have. Now, if money and space were no object, then I might have a different summary...
