I find myself far less enthusiastic over the revamped Joe line than I was just a few months ago. There are several reasons for this;
1. With the lack of anything really "new" over the past couple of months aside from some repackaged repaints, the line just started to flounder for me. The defining moment was the Greatest Battles DVD set. Up until then, I had made an effort to collect nearly everything (still haven't got a clear Wraith), but with this, I said, "Pass." Even with the Target Exclusive Python Patrol Conquest and Tiger Force Rattler - I never much cared for those sub-groups, and while I still haven't decided against them, I for sure don't need another Wild Bill... 2. The Rise of Cobra figures look awful. They come with proportionately huge rocket-firing gimmicks, and the packaging is very dated - and not in the cool retro way that the 25th and Modern Era figures were. I might pick up a few in the clearance bin, but otherwise, pass... 3. I'm poor. I could justify spending the money on something I truly enjoyed collecting, but aside from the upcoming Cobra Island 7-Packs and the other vehicles supposedly coming out, there's nothing I'm willing to sacrifice in place of my little plastic childhood friends. Plus, the price of individual figures is still a bit much. Again, I could justify it when it was a figure I really wanted (though I cursed under my breath), but now... 4. I really don't care about the movie at all. It's just another capitalist franchise crossover assembled by a bunch of unimaginative soulless "artists" who couldn't direct a compelling episode of The Golden Girls (just look what those talented women did with some of the awful stories they had to work with). Will I go see it? Meh. I might get it on Netflix. Hopefully the line endures this year. Resolute is the only real glimmer of hope that it will. I just don't know when these toy manufacturers will get the hint - Speed Racer, Cars, Indiana Jones, The Hulk, etc. - all these lines are still clogging up store shelves and marked down, and they still don't move. Maybe they've made enough of a profit to legitmize this continuing trend, but I think they're just trying to recapture what Kenner had with the original Star Wars line. And that will never happen. Joes did well enough on their own for over a decade. The line tanked when they came out with one too many asinine day-glo gimmicky saturday morning bubblegum revamping of the line. Keep it simple, kids. Or, you know, alienate your core fans. Whatever. |

well, this sure ain't the first time i've seen this particular rant... but i don't disagree with most of what you have said. i have been a bit pickier than you describe yourself as having been (i.e. no Tiger/Python patrol stuff, skipped a bunch of the duplicate figures and comic packs, etc.), but the upcoming stuff is underwhelming at best. i have no interest in the movie, and only a handful of the announced/shown figures are at all intriguing to me (Ice-Viper being one that looks good, as well a a couple of others). it's not the big-ass weapons that come with the figures that turn me off (although i have no interest in them, they are easily discarded or traded), but the fact that they are just 're-imaginings' of the same ol' figures. these are obviously necessary to be released from Hasbro's standpoint, they just don't interest me as a collector who has the Duke, Scarlett, et cetera that i want already.
this, of course, is the situation with which many Joe collectors are faced. we want to support the line so that we continue to get the stuff we really want (more classic characters in modern style)... but there appears to be a line being drawn that many will not cross... myself being a non-crosser. |

"It's just another capitalist franchise crossover"
Hate to say this, but g.i. joe has been nothing but a money making venture from day one. |

I'm in the same boat but knew it was coming. My thing has always been about the original 1982-1994 run. I've gotten very few of the non ARAH Joes and those that I had usually became trade fodder. I did like the Snake Eyes with parka but other then that I don't think I held on to any of them. I thought Wraith, Flint in disguise and Pilot Scarlett were horrible figures so I was more then happy to pass. My initial gut feeling is to pass on all the movie figures but I'll at least reserve judgement until I see them first hand.
I did pick up the Target exclusives and will get the 7 packs, I have the vehicles on pre order but after that It's up in the air. I for one am glad for the break. I was getting bored and my wallet needs a break. I did stray into other lines (Marvel and DC) but it's not like they're hard to find. I don't have to drive all over town with nothing to show for it. If the vintage style figures make a return I'll be back. If not, it was a good run and I'll be happy with what I got. |

I'm not losing intrest at all, it's nice that there aern't any new figures coming because yes, my wallet can use the break also. But intrest is actually sparked because I like the comic lines to vaying degrees. The comic line has vintage "feel" to me, it's simple and not too "Sci-fi" like the movie. Hopefull it stays the same and draws some intrest and gives more exposure to Joe stuff.

True (as far back as the original '60's 12" Joes), but I was more referring to the big-screen exploitation (adaptation, if you will) of an already popular franchise, whose majority of core fans would rather a more faithful adaption be made, if one is to be made at all.

I haven't lost any interest even with the slew of CCs, SEs, SSs, and Dukes coming out of the woodwork. It's been a fun, interesting hobby, thus far, and I've met some pretty cool people that share the enthusiasm. If the line does happen to dry up, I'll be content with what has been released, already. If it keeps going, I hope they release more figures that I'm interested in... those Cobra Island 7-packs seem to be a step in the right direction!

I couldn't agree more. My 25th purchasing has ground to a halt. I pre-ordered the 7 packs and stingers and after that I might pick up 2 of the movie vehicles for customs. Then I'm done until Hasbro gets the hint (like they did with the transformers classics) that the nostalgia machine and us adult collectors are their bread and butter when it comes to G.I.Joe. They'll come back with our classic characters once the movie hype is over and these movie toys are rotting on the shelves.

Hey there is always more customs to be done. I myself have a long list of customs I wanna get to. So I'll still pick up a figure now and then. The new vehicles come out in a month or so and I'm sure a few of the movie figures will make their way home with me, even if just for parts. Lost interest? No way...I'm just gettin started. And that means you b***hes will have to put up with me on Hiss Tank for a looooooooooong time.

I found myself looking at the Ben 10 toys the other day and thinking oooh there are lots of these and some of them are kind of cool. Then I slapped myself in the face and said damnit man get a hold of yourself. So yes I definitely need something new to come out to get my interest back where it should be.
