I'll agree that updated versions of classic characters in the current style is certainly appealing and trumps previous versions...but don't hold your breath waiting for Hasbro to update every figure that everyone wants, particularly before another style change. It's just not going to happen.
You have to hold onto what's the best version in your eyes until something better comes along. I'll admit that current figures are quite good but where is Scarlet? Where is Major Bludd? Where is the Baroness? Where is a Destro without a gimmick?

Some psychologist could make a huge case study from this thread. I've had this conversation with several people before. Fact is, I don't collect figures because I think they're value will be more in the future. If they are, that's a bonus. But I enjoy the hobby. I enjoy trading with others (shameless plug to look at my huge b/s/t list in my sig). I enjoy talking about it all with others here on the tank.

Wow. This thread is actually kind of eye opening to me. I had no clue how many people still collect toys for future "value". I buy toys to collect and display them, customize them and basically because I enjoy it.
The only reason the older toys retain value is because they made less of them, there is a nostalgia factor to them, and well they're just old. Today's toys may never have that same market because kids just don't collect like we used to back in the day.
Hopefully you guys who stash away stacks and stacks of moc figs make some money some day, but I just never collect that way and can't see buying stuff to just hope that it's worth some money one day.

I definitely DO NOT collect action figures, for the purpose of later reselling them.
All of mine are opened and displayed/played with.

Some people associate the word "valuable" with the word "collectible"...and by valuable i mean having a significant monetary value over and above it's original retail price. This common practice leaves the impression of making a gain either instantly...or over a period of time (if i keep this tripwire mint on card...in 10 years i'll double my money!)
Valuable collectibles...are actually items that were never meant to be collected.
ARAH were built to be played with by children...where as 25th was targeted at that same generation that is now old enough to appreciate enhanced detail and articulation (removable viper goggles...really? my 8 year old self wouldn't have cared...my current self finds this interesting...but frustrating) While the 25th line was created to the standards required by the toy safety guidlines of today...they were not targeted at today's kids...but were made safe enough to still be considered TOYS and not miniature plastic/pose-able statues.
if this is deciding which is more valuable "MOC" i think ARAH wins no question...and it always will
however if we're looking at the future market value for a loose/complete figure...honestly i think 25th has a slight advantage.
Regardless...me personally 25th/ME/PoC/30th/whatever's next is only half of the equation that comprises my collection...vintage vehicles will forever and always be more valuable than modern...regardless of condition

collecting for me is just an enjoyable hobby. While i dont believe that any of the figures im collecting today well have a resale value. i also dont know what the stock market well do tomorrow. now listening to my father curse about how much money he is loosing on a regular basis and how hell never be able to retire reminds me of one thing. you only live once. you can loose 50 thousand in the market now days as fast as you can loose it at the casino. so spend it how you wish. theres not much you can bank on as far as a guaranteed return is concerned. the vast majority of us well be working untell are last breath, or living a shit existance off social security and thats not even a guarantee. so enjoy it well it lasts. if reliving your youth brings you happiness then do what makes you happy because you wont get another chance at it.
