It's still an instant collectable as far as I'm concerned. The Power of the Force flooded shelves like no other back in the 90's.
If the modern line 30th anniversary pulls more people back into collecting Joes, the pressure on the 25th figures will rise a few bucks.
My prediction of Figures/Vehicles to hold on to for value purposes (not huge, but more than what you paid):
Comic Pack Iron Grenadier
Comic Pack Tomax & Xamot
Resolute Trooper (Blue)
Defense of Cobra Island
The Variants (self explanatory)
To name a few.

But it doesn't matter how well made a toy might be, the people buying up the stuff to keep MOC don't care if a toy has 14 POA or 2, so long as it becomes valuable. Even though Star Wars didn't get "super articulated" as standard until around 2004, prices on the PotF figures dropped like stone after Episode I.
The core issue with any toy bought as an investment is nobody knows how the market will play out. The 93 Power Rangers stuff (and a lot of the early years at that) have started to gain quite a bit of traction on the secondary market. Why? Because pretty much they were bought for kids who played with them and now, 15-20 years later got hit with a nostalgia bug for their old toys. Then you have the old superhero toys from Toy Biz who've become largely worthless because Toy Biz and later companies made superior product.
Right now, Transformers (particularly G1 and Classics) have built a pretty sizable bubble due to the buzz surrounding the success of the live action films. But what happens in 5 years when these "fair weather collectors" get tired of the toys? Or if Hasbro continues remaking the same characters as they did with STar Wars? Or even GI Joe is not immune.
This year's Snake Eyes and Cobra Trooper trounce their 2007 figures in almost every except nostalgia packaging, so why would new collectors get the 07 figure when the 2011 offers more value for comparitive cost?

IMO everyone who is interested in buying Joes is already buying Joes... in fact probably that number is shrinking due to the demise of the 25th line.

Really, though, there are lots of cases where the 25th is now worth as much as the vintage. DOCI alley viper going for 12 bucks looks a lot like the vintage army builders going for around that. You could just about get a vintage stinger for cheaper than the 25th version.

have not seen this thread, till now. Granted it's been kicked from one end of the tank to the other the past couple years. But if all still feel the same as now . as from back then...
What I feel for my collection is a little of both.. value, AND collectibility. Granted I have stacked crates in the back room with carded figures. I have bins of unopened other items.. some vintage and some things opened mixed with 25th and 30th(skystriker of course!)
with the fact of people who do not have children(like me) buying these figures for their own personal enjoyments. Will not break them cause they do not play with them.
Value?... as someone mentioned Ben10, Bakugan(spelling??), Halo, And transformers.. Now...
What do our toys have that they don't ? an age of followers over 20 years in history. We grew up .. having not one but two different era cartoons based with having a very long running toyline..82-94.. well over ten years of shelf life.
Ben10 has a show.. Bakugan has a gameing board. As for comics dead? I walk into a local comic shop that has gaming going on.. what's there? Kids, holding comics, playing magic, or warhammer, and some? even Bakugan.. IF the joes has a Long running toon now? Might have a chance for kids... Hasbro shelving Renegades.. somewhat a bad Idea for the line. But they still air re-runs of Arah. so it's a plus.
my point is this.. Kids today are never going to be what we were. YOu all say they would rather have their video games and cell phones.
Have we forgotten our roots? Atari, Nintendo(NES) Sega(SMS), Arcades(quarter games)....? So what? today they have Wii and XBox.. and computers have been around for ages with internet.
Back then we had Ghostbusters(and a cartoon and movie to back it.) today we have Gijoe (movie and renegades that was recently canned) But they were there. How long do you think Thundercats will last? they at least also had a history of shelf life as we had back then. and now a cartoon with a new storyboard.
IT ALL comes back around for a second generation to enjoy ... the problem is parents of the new generation( not us everywhere else) Less exposure to the children.. Saw a mother handing corps figures to a kid . I asked the kid.. if he knew who Snake eyes or storm shadow were... He said yeah! The mother looked at me.. I asked her.. Ma'am.. why deprave the boy from a character or two that he honestly would enjoy more then generics? she did not have an answer. I said it's better to let him enjoy a higher priced figure he'd enjoy and play with, then you wasteing money on a 6 pack that are stiffer then rocks.
I handed him a commando SE, and that desert SE. She nodded to me and said I was right. I said I'm a joe thru an thru... it's been there for me for 25 years... corps were not even heard of then...
This happened a couple of days ago.. I was curious so I rather spied that woman to the check out.. I can't tell you how happy that boy was when those two joes were put through the magical''BLip station". He was finally able to start his collection with a smile of golden sunshine... and it was due to me.. could only smile on and say Yo Joe. That is the issue we have... they know the characters from RoC.. but they have little exposure to them.

My son was born on May 16, 2002, the release date for Star Wars II. After leaving he and my wife to rest I stopped off at a Wal Mart and picked up a couple of AOTC figs to stick in a rubbermaid tub along with a newspaper and other items that reflect what was going on at that time. Honestly, I don't even remember who I grabbed - though in all likelihood one of them was a Clone. He's got plenty of open clones and vehicles in his collection now, but it will be neat to turn over the sealed figs at some point in the future when he can appreciate them.
And yeah... I wouldn't be at all surprised if his generation chases eBay or Crave or whatever to search for Bakugan during their mid life crisis phase.

My son is 3 and is enjoying GI Joe (Minus all the small parts) I hope he becomes a fan like me but is up to him. I keep a set of MOC figs for him and I have opened alot for him to play with so if they are worth something great, if not who cares as long as he enjoys playing with them.

I only see the rare items as having any value. Carded 25th is still available at TJ Maxx today. I have no illusions that my collection will only be worth alot to me and only what someone is willing to pay for it when I decide to sell it off, if I decided to.
Grading something is a waste because in my eyes a 4.99 figure is still a 4.99 figure despite it's grading, the grading does nothing to increase it's value and the grade today may not be the grade in 3 years from now when it's collected dust, the card warped or bubble cracked...

I sold off all of my loose (but complete) 25th Joes, when PoC started last summer. I made piddle on them. I think, that as newer, improved action figure formats roll out, the older and more toy like formats will fall out of interest.
Like said before, the "vintage" Joes are popular, because we all destroyed ours playing with them, traded them off for other toys, or our parents sold/lost them.
Most of us bought 25th stuff as adults, and we knew how to care for them. Let's be honest, the body construction of the 25th figures vs. that of the PoC figures, makes 25th look like Playskool bullshit. As better versions of characters come out, no one will want to waste money on those crappy, overly abundant, pristine 25th Joes.
Just like with PotF2 in comparision to modern "vintage style" SW figures.
