In my Joe-Verse, everyone in COBRA is a blueshirt, or Dark Blue as I call them.
The Vipers are the special ops of COBRA. They are basically COBRA's GIJOE. In fact, their specific purpose is to destroy GIJOE just as GIJOE's principle goal is to destroy COBRA. Dark Blues and Vipers are not in mixed units. Serpentor is the Viper general in my Joe-Verse. A Viper unit consists of BATs to soften up the enemy, a group of regular infantry Vipers, peppered with specialist Vipers like Tele-Vipers, Techno-Vipers, SAW Vipers, Frag-Vipers, Range Vipers (I use as snipers) and HEAT Vipers. Vipers that operate in specialist units are: Toxo-Vipers-basically hostile environment troopers Night-Vipers-for nighttime and/or total darkness operations Alley Vipers-urban operations Alley Vipers are often paired with Motor Vipers as the Stun is more of an urban assault vehicle in my Joe-Verse. |

"But seriously, if you're going to attack me in an Urban Environment- please have enough sense to wear some colors that make you less visible that a blazing house full of sparklers."
Thats why I like the '04 version 9 the best. He looks like he could sneak up on anything. |

in my joe universe the Vipers are ex-military, blue shirts are just low-level grunts of Cobra

The way i see it it's like these:
Cobra Troopers, is where everyone starts, then you're or a Viper (an infantry soldier) or go to be an Officier within the organization, not only figthing in the field but doing administrative work too . Whoever is a Viper can later specialise in the various and colorful specialty forces Cobra has to offer. |

Not that I wouldn't prefer urban camo Alley Vipers, but because that "hazard orange" naturally screams "danger" or "caution" to most folks. From that skewed perspective, it almost makes sense. As someone noted above, it's like they're saying "I'm really just that bad-ass that I can rock the orange and blue." That, or because they have so much trouble seeing through those faceplate/visors they need to make each other stand out so they don't shoot themselves in the back..... |

Here's my explanation for AVs.
The standard uniforms are the Spy Troops blues. Any deviation from that is personal choice by select individual Alley Viper First Teams. Alley Vipers, being supremely cock-sure and taking a cue from the cock-sure warriors of the past, Zouaves and Landsknecht, like to be flashy. Occasionally overly confident in their armor, they know from experience that they aren't likely to be going against anything bigger than a .50, and if they do they'll just call in air support. Which brings me to the final point of some Alley Vipers using the day-glo uniforms, not getting shot up by the aforementioned air support. Cobra's Little Bird pilots are a wee indiscriminate at times with their miniguns. |

why must they be? not to mention the idea that Troopers are just average. there is nothing that indicates Troopers are just average. in fact, the original filecard states quite the contrary, spelling out training and skillsets whereas the Vipers are just basic infantry with no other skillset.
if you are a Viper and have no other training but Infantry, the Trooper is a step up. I'm not sure why that seems impossible just because Vipers look cooler. How would I use them? In cobat Vipers would go in first. They are better armed and have body armor. The Blue Shirts would hold back until the Vipers did the dirty work. Once they are in it would become more of a police state if you will. That is where their extra training would come to play. |

As far as ye olde Viper vs. Trooper debate, I tend to go with what some other folks have already mentioned: Troopers are the "baseline" Cobra unit. Unless you join Cobra with a strong skillset to begin with, you start as a Trooper. From there, you can "branch out" to the various specialties available to Cobra. Troopers tend to be "jacks of all trades/masters of none" though some lean towards certain specialties (Divers - Eels, Bazooka Troopers - HEAT Vipers). The exceptionally gifted among the Troopers might go on to become Cobra Officers. All troopers have basic combat skills, but also tend to have some other kind of secondary skill that will lead them down their further Cobra career path. They're front-line fighters if the situation demands it, but normally are second-line and rear echelon fighters, with a few exceptions like the Night Watch.
Vipers are specialized Infantrymen. They're the troopers who were best at slinging bullets downrange, executing tactical maneuvers, and generally doing the things Infantrymen do...and aren't much good at anything else. They don't "outrank" Cobra Troopers so much as simply have a different job. Becoming a Viper is more like a "lateral promotion" than a "step up." A Trooper could outrank a Viper if they've been in the organization long enough, etc... Officers are a whole different ball of wax (I tend to call 'em "Pre-Siegies" in my Joe-verse), but that's neither here nor there. Suffice to say the rather "bad ass" description on their original filecard holds true in my Joe-Verse. To use a video game analogy: Cobra Officers are the guys that are a "boss" in an early level but become a common enemy in later levels. Last edited by Jmacq1; 04-06-2009 at 11:50 AM.. |

For me, blueshirts equal base guards, hq staff, cooks, janitors, mps, etc. Strictly non-combat personnel. Sometimes also Viper recruits.
Regardless of what the filecards say for the respective characters, it's hard to get past the basic-ness of the blueshirt and the better-geared-ness ofthe Viper...speaking strictly from a boyhood-imagination standpoint. Hence, the divsion: Vipers = combat troops; blueshirts = non-combat base personnel. The trouble I have NOW is that the Resolute troopers look like as combat-ready as the Vipers. (Maybe even more so.) What to do now? How do both of these lines co-exist? As some have mentioned before, I could see the Resolute trooper and the Vipers being something akin to army and Marines. In this re-imagination, however, blueshirts still = non-combat base personnel. |
