A couple years ago there were a rash of repacks in my area. Primarily with Star Wars figures (Clone Troopers getting replaced with PotF2 era Stormtroopers mostly). Occasionally they'd hit the odd Joe item (usually swapping with Corps figures), but thankfully they seem to have either moved on or given up or whatever...at least in my area.

The only thing worse than a repacker is a dumb repacker. Who sacrifices a vintage figure like that? Morons.

From my perspective and although I DO NOT condone re-packing, Hasbro is in part to blame for this. So many toy companies use this strategy to where they bundle up a bunch of items that are "Ok" at best and sometimes even horrible with something and in most cases just one of what you and everyones mother was looking for and ONLY wanted in the first place in an attempt to try to get you to buy the WHOLE pack.
They do the same thing with the Comic Packs. How many times have we seen a New/Sought after figure along side a re-painted or unwanted one. Aside from things like E-bay and the Tank you either buy it as is or are Shit out of luck. Hasbro itself makes NO alternatives for the buyer to buy it as a single. So as a result...re-packing occurs. It's not really that far-fetched of a concept when you think about the reasons to why people do it. I can guarantee you that if the "New" or Highly Sought after figures were just packed as singles from the get go you'd see a lot less re-packing. |

This is why I think if the line does continue after the movie it will all go the way of E-tailers because you can't repack online...
can you? lol

This shit makes me sick. Whats with these people anyway?
My perspective on this situation is this: Prior to reading about it on this site, I have never seen this in my area, let alone ever conceived of such a thing either. I had never heard the term "re-pack" and initially didn't even know what it meant. I am sure there are thieves that lurk here that never had either. By us constantly bringing it up I think that it has had unintended consequences in that it has given these thieves "food for thought" and they have turned around and started doing this as a result. By trying to bring this situation to the forefront we have made it worse because invariably these guys are going to gravitate to this site one day or another and learn how to re-pack. Well, I believe that day has come and will only increase with the nostalgia that sure to come with the release of the movie. More people will get into it, more people will steal. As far telling anyone at these stores about it, look, most of them don't give a shit. Managers, cart people, service desk, concessions, whoever, they have bigger fish to fry or just plain don't care. Maybe we can annoy them to death? I saw one ( a re[-pack) down in D.C. when I went to visit and I did tell a manager. Thats the last time I ever do that. The guy basically embarrassed me without embarrassing me. His response was less than enthusiastic and he looked at me like I was some nut case. So... I have given up on that approach. I'm also not going to sweat it because realistically how many of these things am I going to buy anyway? Do we really care about other collectors? Are we really that virtuous? No, we just hate to see someone getting something else for free, basically having more than us and not deserving of it. So, really, we're just as selfish as they are, we just won't stoop to their level. After the experience I had I am giving up playing sheriff and Columbo. It's Target, TRU, Walmart and Kmart's problem. Thats why they have loss prevention, that's why these people have jobs. I wonder if any of them lose their jobs after we uncover these wackyrepackies? If so, good, I hope they do. After all, they're not doing their job, right? Ultimately they are the ones losing, not us. |
