Yep, I know the place well! Wow... if the thieves were smart, which they're probably not, they'd sue fast! We were not allowed to lay a hand on them, regardless of whether or not they had something concealed, since they could have a concealed weapon. More of a safety issue for securities sake.
Way to take down the bad guys though! Hey, I thought you were scootin' off to Texas (poor guy)...? Provided that the security has the proper training (I did) and the correct insurance against a mishap (we did) we were authorized to restrain and arrest people for becoming confrontational, getting physical or breaking the law. Don't assume that security cannot or does not have that authority. |

In Texas, theft up to $50 is considered a Class C offense. Punishable by a fine not to excede $200. Theft of $50 or more makes it a Class B offense which calls for arrest and a punishment of up to 180 days in jail and a max fine of $2000.
The great thing about theft offenses is that they can also be enhanced. After several theft convictions, stealing a pack of gum can turn into a felony. You loss prevention guys correct me if I'm wrong...But dont they have to conceal an item and make an effort to leave without paying (such as bypassing the registers) before it is considered theft? Oh and I know several states have a three strikes and your out law. I still cringe when I think about that young guy in California who was arrested and sentenced to 25 years for stealing a loaf of bread or something because he had two previous petty theft offenses. I've never worked in retail loss prevention and I am certainly not a lawyer so I will not offer legal opinions or advice. If the law allows them to be arrested for shoplifting then I say throw the book at them. If it only provides for a fine then fine the shit out of them and move on. Either way repackers are thieves and should be treated as such. |

That may be true. I can see them tackling what they think is a major wave of theft and re-selling. But on a daily basis, I don't think they really care that much. It's acceptable loss. But that's just based on my friend's experience. It could vary from store to store. In any case, I doubt a repacker would warrant that much effort. And, as someone said, the term repacker is what we use. A store employee probably wouldn't call it that.

Over the past several weeks I have noticed that these repacks of Joes are seriously getting out of control. I have noticed this happening in the metro-Atlanta area of Georgia - the NW Georgia area specifically. The attached are pictures from Target in Cartersville GA, an Airborne repacked with a vintage Airborne w/out weapons and the newer Resolute Comic pack which had Destro/Shockblast – repacked with a Cobra Commander w/out a helmet and a vintage Beachhead – no weapons or accessories in the package. But this is just a small part of what I have seen over the past few weeks/months. The worst is the newest 5 packs, people are swapping out the Vipers with the regular Vipers without the chrome finish on the mask like mad, I’ve seen at least 6 of these at different stores since the 5 packs have started showing up. People are also swapping out the Baroness with a VvV Baroness. But this weekend I was in a Wal-Mart in Lost Mountain GA, they had a single Joe 5-pack, and by now I just have to look and see what people have put in there. There were 4 figures that I really couldn’t identify as Joes, one was perhaps a knock off of Gnawgahyde, but what really got me was some jerkwad put a straight-arm Scarlett in the place of Lady Jaye.
What gets me is that some of the repacks are close to the art on the package, like with these pictures it may be hard for employees to catch, but some of them aren’t even close and it staggers the mind as to how these things get put on the shelf. I hope I have the chance to catch someone trying to do this, especially these “Scabs on the Face of Humanity” running around NW Georgia. At first it was a bit amusing, mainly because you didn’t see a lot of them, but now they are on just about every shelf I look at in every store I go to. I have decided that going forward, every time I see this I will get a manager and explain it to them, it may be a waste of time but I have really had it with seeing this crap on the shelves. If nothing else at least it may get this garbage off of the shelves and make space for the legit items. I would hate for an unknowing parent to accidently buy one of these for their kid(s) and a kid end up with this crap. At the very least, the manager/supervisor of the toy department should know the products enough to help stop this. The more I think about it and the more I see it, the madder I get. I wish they could get caught and somehow get prosecuted for doing it, because no matter how you look at it, its stealing. Anyway, I will do my part. I wish all “honest collectors” would do the same. I hate repacking especially when they put corps figs and crap like that in there, but I gotta be honest with you I'd be pretty happy to get a vintage beachhead and airborne

The right hand and crotch were broken on the airborne, 10$ for a Beachhead without any accessories seemed a bit much.

I'd grab that vintage Beachhead.
I have never seen anything repacked.

Now, I also know that the official policy was we did not pursue past the sidewalk, although I did see shoplifters wrestled to the ground after throwing portable DVD players at our supervisor, so hey. I miss those days... |
