Sure enough though Target security was right behind them giving chase. One of them was nabbed right outside the doors, the other one literally was tackled over someones car and wrestled to the ground and the last (the one that flew by us) got out of the parking lot darted across the street through traffic and the store security still didn't letup they chased him all the way to the mall across the street and finally the cops showed up (with target popcorn bags in hand) and took all three away
I have a friend that was head of Target security in San Diego, and the non-contact rules Target (hell, any employer actually) employs tied his hands on a daily basis. So much so that he confronted a suspect once and was nearly beaten to death. He is now permanently disabled, and Target really hasn't done anything to compensate him. |

I don't see how you could get arrested for repacking. The guy paid for the merchandise, then he tried to return goods that didn't belong to the store. They can just refuse the return. He didn't steal anything. And he could just say it was an honest mistake or his kid switched them and he didn't notice or they were already repacked when he bought them and he didn't know it. I don't know. I'm not buying this one, but I wish the fantasy were true.
Last month I bought a Cobra Diver. He was the only one on the pegs and I've never seen one in the store before. Excited about my good fortune, I grabbed him, paid for him and raced home. I quickly opened the package, went to stand him up and realized that he had two left lower legs and feet. I put him back in the package, went right back to the store and approached the customer service counter and in all honesty, my heart was pounding and I was nervous because I didn't know if they would even let me return an opened package and I was afraid that some Joe collector would get behind in line and tell the worker that I had switched out the right lower leg with a left or some nonsense. At any rate, the store took the return without a problem after I explained it to them. My point is not that repackers are making an honest mistake - they're lying cheating bastards - but they could claim to be making a mistake and so there's no way they can arrested for attempting to return a toy. |

Having worked in loss prevention in the past, and knowing California laws regarding treatment of "suspected" criminals, do you know how fast these guys could sue Target over securities reaction? Tackled over a car hood? Seriously? Wow!

Yep, I know the place well! Wow... if the thieves were smart, which they're probably not, they'd sue fast! We were not allowed to lay a hand on them, regardless of whether or not they had something concealed, since they could have a concealed weapon. More of a safety issue for securities sake.
Way to take down the bad guys though! Hey, I thought you were scootin' off to Texas (poor guy)...? |

In the case of this questionable repacker story, I just don't see even the strictest of Targets calling the cops on someone who hasn't really stolen anything. Repacking is an unethical, and basically shitty practice, but it's not really a crime. I'd actually prefer cops' time wasn't wasted on stuff like this. |

Actually, that's a pretty bad analogy. Running a stop sign will get you a traffic citation, a court date and a fine. Shoplifting, on the other hand, will get you a mugshot, fingerprinting, a night in the slammer with boyfriend bubba, a court date, a fine, and either community service or jail sentence. BIG difference between the two. Whether or not it's a tax write off is irrelevant.
The great thing about theft offenses is that they can also be enhanced. After several theft convictions, stealing a pack of gum can turn into a felony. You loss prevention guys correct me if I'm wrong...But dont they have to conceal an item and make an effort to leave without paying (such as bypassing the registers) before it is considered theft? |
