I work at TRU.
I know my toys and toy lines. But I'm a collector. I took the time to know my shit because I collect. The majority of my fellow employees are teenagers getting paid 8 dollars an hour. They don't care about toys. Its a fucking paycheck. but the folks at the front desk can literally pull up any info about what you're looking for on the computers. You just have to ask nice. But most customers like to take their annoyance out on the teen employees who are told not to argue back. Because that would be bad customer service. Its almost like the uniform shirt is some kind of sign that says its ok to talk down to us.. Ignorance about toys annoys you? Why don't you just buy your shit online than? That way the annoying overworked and underpaid staff can take a break from the grown ass people who come in and berate them for not knowing every single detail about 1 or 2 of HUNDREDS of toy lines containing THOUSANDS of pieces. You know whats really annoying as an employee? When collectors come in and completely tear through the place." Hey FUCK the people who just set the displays up...I want MY shit NOW and I'm gonna pout and whine until I get my way. And if I don't, I'm gonna go online and badmouth the people who can't name every single nerdy bullshit I was looking for!" The managers and supervisors (those wearing polo shirts) can look shit up for you. THEY are the ones who get emails about new stuff, promotions, and whatever. You looking for something specific? Ask them for help. The floor employees (those in TRU t-shirts, usually teens) are there as grunts to lift things, and try their best to keep the place clean while also assisting customers, meanwhile keeping tabs on any kids screaming and running through the store while parents ignore the noise. They are usually the ones bullied by the dickbags who feel the uniform is an excuse to shit on them. Now you know.... Hey, listen, we all have bad days. But you don't need to take yours out on me. Let me fill you in on a few facts to hopefully straighten you out on your misplaced ire: I stand by my earlier statements. The employees at my local TRU stores are mostly ignorant about toys, top-to-bottom. If things are different at your store, congratulations. Where I am, the help is lousy at all levels of employee I have encountered for the overwhelming majority of the employees I have dealt with. And that is something to be noted and called out, not excused.

They are usually the ones bullied by the dickbags who feel the uniform is an excuse to shit on them. Now you know.... Most of the employees I see at toys r us aren't even worth the $10 they pay here. Half of them just walk around not helping customers, they have no knowledge of where things are located at their store, nor do they respect the job enough to learn the brands they sell and what they make, often talking to friends or other employees about their weekend. The management team was a bigger joke there. The few managers that were helpful got treated like shit by the upper management who just sat in the office. Hell, when the district manager would show up, the store manager wouldn't even come in leaving the customer service manager and assistant store manager to deal with his issues. My fiancé picked up a lot of slack from the teenagers who basically were stealing company time, being insubordinate towards management, just over all a waste of company space, yet would get away with anything. All the while my fiancé got yelled at, admonished when she wouldn't get enough credit cards or reward card sign ups.. basically did everything a manager does, without the title and pay.. so you can say what you want about the employees.. I've seen it from both sides.. it is a menial job, that is expected to hire high schoolers to help clueless parents and middle aged collectors, both of which they can't seem to do correct. I am not saying all the employees are like that. But out of the 27 Toys r Us stores that I visit on a regular basis.. I would say 5-8 of the employees and managers actually took pride in their jobs enough to learn what they sell and where they are located, while the others are just there to collect a F***ing paycheck. That being said.. I haven't seen too many repacks lately. The last few I have seen have been Marvel Legends figures with replaced figure and BAF parts.

Weird, in Canada, I find the TRU employees are very helpful and actually know their stuff. I see people asking an employee if they have something and if they don't know, they'll call up another person in that department.
Walmart on the other hand up here, they don't seem to know anything. I tried to price adjust something I bought on walmart.ca and the lady wouldn't give it to me cause they said online is always cheaper. I ended up getting the adjustment done cause I emailed customer service with my order number.

I will say that being polite gets you a lot further in life in most instances and a TRU it's no different. When the last round of 50th figures came out it seemed like they were never going to hit my TRU, they had been out over two months at this point. A manager walked up to me and asked if they could help me find anything and I started telling them I collect G.I. Joes and made some jokes about being n adult collector, nerd, etc... we laughed and he told me how he collects WWE figures and understood the whole collecting scene. We talked for a few more minutes and then he said hold on let me check something for you. He said a truck had come in but they just started to unload it. He radioed in to the guy on the truck and gave him their store code(s) for Joes and they indeed had some product. He went to the truck and the two of them dug through and found the boxes and brought them out. I was able to get fresh cases of both the 2-packs and 3-packs. I really expressed my gratitude for them going the extra mile for me. I have been plenty of times since and got the same treatment from him and any other supervisor/manager there. It's how I got multiple Gung-ho/Shadow Guard packs. It's also made my collecting of the 6" SW BS line much easier. All I am saying is it's as simple as being nice, striking up a conversation, treating employees like human beings, thanking them for their efforts even if futile and they will usually help you out the best they can.
Any of the employees, when I asked and they had ones yet to be put out, they'd grab it for me and let me look through. If there was something I wanted, I would get those and leave the rest neatly in there for them and it's worked really well for me. Even recently when I was looking for some new Star Wars, one of the ladies were restocking the shelves and saw me looking through the racks. She pointed out that she had several more cases on the cart that she still needs to shelve and said there's more there and feel free to dig through those. (mind you, it helps her too when I do that cause if I take anything, she'll have less to have to put on the shelf)

about 90 % of the tiem I try to be nice to the workers and they do what they can for me, they aren't very empowered to make high quality customer service a priority by management, lets just say that. I did have that story recently where TRU worker just price adjusted something for me because I claimed I had a 5 off coupon I had left at home which was nice because I went home and found it then used it again at a different store about a week later.
