So, I met a fellow collector here at Fort Benning. Now, granted- he's not a big Joe collector, he's more of a Star Wars guy... which is pretty cool, because he does respect the Joes and knows I will bludgeon him with a small child if he insults the Joes.
But here's what happens: I go and buy a figure, one of the Marvel guys... and I naturally tear open the package. He gasps like I just dropped the Declaration of Independence into a paper shredder. I give him a look like he's being retarded, which creates an awkward moment, kinda like the Luke/Leia make-out scenes after you've watched the whole trilogy for the first time and it registers in your mind. His words: "You open your figures? DUDE! Why?" His eyes glare down at my figure as if it were a dying rape victim in my arms, gasping its last breath and asking God to watch over her children. "Um... to enjoy them...?" Note the question mark. This implies I am not understanding his mindset, kinda like listening to an Autistic child talk about Naruto or something. "Dude... then they aren't worth shit!" He says, like this will topple my entire dreams of having a retirement fund based entirely on boxes of Hasbro's little plastic men. I suppose I'm supposed to react like I just bought a shitload of stock right before the Great Crash on Wall Street, or maybe even watched my wife give birth to a child of a different color. I don't. I've been through this crap before. It was the same with comic books. Apparently opening these collections of drawn and colored pictures that tell stories people put effort and late nights into are meant to be vacuum-sealed in a plastic bag and guarded by two pitbulls in a temperature controlled room blessed by 2 Rabbis and 3 Catholic priests. Then it was McFarlane figures. But I love that stinky formaldahyde smell. But, NO! Keep it in the box and put it in a hard plastic scratchfree clamshell package and never get it under a light bulb bright enough to read by... and don't even eat fried chicken in the same room with it, you savage! My question... who actually gives a damn what these things are worth? Okay, I have a few I have kept put away in the package... but those are going to be for my son, or even my grandson (if I have a daughter). They aren't some things I am hoarding away. I'm not going to gloat over something in mint condition. I'm reading my comic books. My figures are on a shelf. Get over it. I enjoy it that way. Besides, has anyone who has taken this ridiculous effort to get something MOC ever profited from it? I doubt it. If so, speak up on it. If not, I say we enjoy the stuff we bought. If I wanted to look at something and not touch it, I'd do a google image search or just stare at it in the toy aisle at Wal-Mart. Until then, I'm opening shit. Cry me a river... I think I have that SHARC and a 25th Anniversary Snake Eyes around here somewhere. Oh, and the card back has a typo on it. Guess it isn't worth a dime. Oh, well... what a shame. |

A typo on the cardback would be worth more.
Things in the package retain their value more, fact of life. So if you are trying to make a profit, keeping packaged is the way to go. For most people it's all about how you enjoy 'em. Open 'em up if you want to. Keep 'em packaged. Either way is fine, if it's the way you want to enjoy 'em. Don't come down on people that keep 'em MOC, don't like it when they come down on you. Each their own. I read my comics, then I bag and board 'em. Some stuff I do keep MOC, just because I feel like it. It's usually a variant or something I feel will be rarer in the future.

I know some people who have profited from flipping Mocs... but that's beside the point.
Some people do enjoy Moc collections, I'm one of those guys who has two of each (plus army builders)... I don't do it for the value, though I could one day be presuaded to sell, but because I think a wall of Moc figures just looks pretty awesome. I mean yeah, your friend shouldn't flip on you for collecting your way, but at the same time, people are free to collect Moc if that makes them happy too.

And I totaly dig what you do with your comics, because that's "taking care of something and enjoying it". I just dislike people freaking out over an opened figure.
Forgive my ignorance, but aren't they supposed to be AFA approved and hard-boxed to be considered MOC? |

People enjoy their figures different ways, obviously. To me, keeping them in a box is fine, but i don't have any desire that they make money. As a for instance i have a full set of McQuarrie Concept figures, including exclusives, from the 30th anniversary line. They are my only MOC figures. I have them in clam shell cases. I keep them because McQuarrie was one of my biggest inspirations growing up when i wanted to be an artist. I felt it was the best way to display figures based upon his work. Like 3D art. I keep them because they mean something to me, not because i think they might be worth something. I have no intention of ever giving those up.
I also have a full set, including exclusives, opened. My son plays with them all the time. My son opens, plays with, and takes care of (as best he can) every other figure we've ever purchased. You outlined exactly how i feel about "investing" in collectibles.

I was a stickler until I saw my friends collection of opened toys. I had that horrified look until it set in that none of us bought to sale so why keep them in a box? I am careful when opening but that is just because I like the card art. Other than that I buy to display open. If something catches my sons eye I will buy 2, one for me to display and one for him to put through the paces .

i started collecting during wave 1. i only kept them moc for me. not because of value. if i wanted to open one i would just buy doubles.
for the remander of the waves the value and demand kinda skyrocketed. but toward the wave 12 and such, revisions were released. demand went down. i have a whole arah collection that is loose and on display. i have no need to open my moc,s. but i dont collect joes for value. cobra was something i looked up to as a kid. i still think is cool.i would never sell what i think is cool. memories are more important than value to me.and acutally i think the 25th line really isnt worth crap. the articulation is bad ass but in all i think the figures stink. all 25th did for me was fire back up my arah collecting |

I figure I'm doing the MOC collectors a favor by opening my collection up.
