I don't really remember what my first was. I just knew that the guys in green shirts looked booooooring to me. I must have had Hawk & Steeler as I had the vehicles they came with. They were probably swivel arm 83s.
83 is when the first GI Joe cartoons hit & would mean I was 7 that summer. Looking at the 83 list of figs however isn't ringing any bells. Possibly Destro or SE. I'm thinking however that I must have been too poor or something. Had Ace, but that was from my aunt & I know he wasn't my first. My friend had a ton of stuff I got to play with.
I'm thinking it was Hawk, then Steeler, then either Ace or Scrap Iron. SI would be the first one I didn't think totally sucked & Ace's Astronaught outfit confused the hell out of me.

Straight Arm: Short Fuze & Breaker
Swivel Arm: Stalker & Flash
Short-fuze - ironically, I never opened. I still have him Mint on a not-so-mint card. (I was very young so the package was not as protected). I remember having it hung up on my wall. My younger brother got to it and damaged the card.
Somehow he's still alive! haha.

First was a straight arm breaker at the 5 and dime. They got them before the big chains ( Hills, K Mart). Later went back and got R&R and Snake Eyes. I too was a SW freak at 7 but the bendable knees and elbows sold me on Joes. After that it was 2 a week from Hills. I had trouble sleeping on Friday thinking of which Joes to get. Sadly I never found a Storm Shadow until v2 came out.

I was born in '81, so I never really got to enjoy the first wave when they came out. However, I did buy Snake Eyes first, because I thought masks were cool. Hell, I still think masks kick ass. Then I had to get him "some guys to fight". My cousin got too old for Joes (I still do not understand what that means), and he gave me all of his old Joes and Cobras... so most of the 2nd wave, and all of the first wave right there, as well as some vehicles.
I was helping my dad clean up an old shed one day and he found a metal box. He said "hey, boy... put them damn GI Joe guns in here so ya don't lose 'em". To this day, I still have that metal box (back at my parents' house, used to hold all my keepsakes of extreme value to myself). I used the box for their weapons and other gear, and I had shoeboxes for the figures. I had to use shoeboxes because I never saw the point in buying the "collector cases". I had a massive wooden foot locker (yes, military issue- courtesy of my cousin who had already joined the Army by this time) for all my vehicles, and I also used the closet in my room for them.
My father to this day gripes about "that damned thing with all the pieces I put together on Christmas Eve, got done at 4 AM and an hour later you were screaming about Sanny Claus and your Cobra Whatsershit". Yeah, the terrordome.
I took good care of my stuff, and even when my relatives got me the bogus "The Corps!" figures, I took care of those, too (always need regulars, hostages, and casualties... not to mention extra weapons).
GI Joes were 3 dollars at Wal-Mart, and I got 5 dollars a week for doing my chores around the house... more if I did extra tasks like wash the car or help my Dad do a bigger task. I'd even go around my Grandmother's neighborhood and see if anyone had anything they needed done (dude, I could detail a car when I was 10. And I only charged $20!). I would save my money and get a GI Joe every month, maybe 2 or 3. So, GI Joe taught me the value of a hard-earned dollar.
I used to be fascinated by the technology and equipment they used, so I wound up developing a huge interest in military hardware. I could identify jets, helos, weapons, and even tell people what capabilities they had. It was awesome when I was little, but frightened the hell out of people when I had long hair and Slayer shirts in high school (thank you, Colombine Douchebags).
I remember when Ninja Turtles came out. To me, they were the most retarded thing I had ever seen. It was just... dumb. I didn't consider it to be feasable, and it annoyed me when all my GI Joe buddies were playing with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and saying stupid stuff like "Cowabunga" or whatever those idiots yelled. To me, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow were the real ninjas- and they would kick the turtles' asses, eat them in a stew, piss in the Shredder's helmet, and tag team April O'Niel and make Splinter watch the whole fiasco. Okay, maybe I didn't think that. But Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow were more badass than those idiots ever could be.
I remember boxing them all up and putting them in the attic... many years later, they wound up "gone". My heroes, the guys that I always admired... hell, the reason I stood in front of a Flag and took an oath, because they made me feel like it was right to stand up and defend your country from some punks who wanted to take freedom away from people- they were gone.
So I started buying them again. Now you know why I hate my mother.
And knowing is half the battle.
