I have often wondered to myself why 1986 was so ignored by this line, and it must be because this was where things really started going downhill. Beachhead and the updated, General Hawk were pretty cool in their own way, but a lot of the others just seemed to me like derivative rip-offs of previous characters to me (Wet Suit=Torpedo; Leatherneck=Gung Ho; Dialtone=Breaker; Iceberg=Snow Job; Lifeline=Doc). I know some people love them, but I never did that much, and I guess the guys at Hasbro don't, either.
I did always like Zandar, though. I hope we get a version of him at some point. |

86 for me was the pinnacle of my Joe collecting life. I love all the 86 characters. Dial-tone is my all time favorite. Plenty of these characters were part of the cartoon, and Comics as well. Important parts in some cases. I just hope after the movie line fades they start on 86 with reckless abandon................

They weren't really rip-offs but more or less new characters brought in to replace the old guys since a new generation of Joe fans were entering the game. Plenty of great characters and figures were released from '86-'91.

I agree that lowlight, lifeline and a few more needs to be done 25th style, but I really think they need to fix some of the orginal 13. I have looked at the posts on a proper leatherneck and tele viper and I totally agree, but grunt, steeler, and breaker need proper figures as well. I also agree on the 86 scifi and don't tone it down because he's great as is.

I think why 86 is so important to me is because it was the last of the "perfect" timeframe in the comic-verse. 1986 was the last time all of the great older characters still fit in the same continuity.
In 87, we lost the old CC and we got the new CC. That doesn't work for me. When old CC came back, he got rid of Firefly and Zartan, so that doesn't work for me either. And even though those two escaped, their return came after the deaths of Doc and Breaker, and since those two are among the best B-list characters in the GI Joe universe, anything after their death is still less than an ideal timeframe. So late 1986, early 1987 is the only time that all of the (in my mind) most pivotal characters were still together. |
