That's a cool story dude.
Last Friday after seeing Watchmen I went over to Target to check what they had in stock and usually whenever I go hunting for Joes I don't see anybody in the aisles, not even kids. This time though I ran into a couple young guys totally crowding the section of Joes, almost huddled together. I hung back looking over the vehicles, I glanced up a couple times and they almost looked pissed I'm not sure why, maybe they were irked by the selection. They eventually scurried off and as a joke I gave them a "shoo! shoo!" motion as I stepped up hah, who knows maybe they were repackers? Last edited by CallMeRotten; 03-10-2009 at 02:50 AM.. |

LOL. It's true; people who like G.I. Joe like to talk about G.I. Joe. LOL. I would be too timid to strike up a conversation with a random stranger looking at the Joe pegs though. *whispers* Some of them is real scary looking. LOL.
Oddly enough I always wear my Nascar cap (either a Dale Jr. AMP cap or a Jeff Gordon pit cap) and if I ever see someone also wearing a Nascar cap I always say, "Hey, I like your cap!" |

yeah I met a couple of joe fans before at the store. Pretty much the same story we talked about joe stuff and how much we like it better finding the stuff at the store cause you dont have to pay for shipping. I pluged the Hisstank and he or she said they been here before but never signed up. Then about 20 mins of talking Joe stuff we started to make out in the toy section. Then after about 15 mins of Hardcore action we leave the store in a police car.
lol

There's a teenager who I think has Asperger's disorder who I've run into locally two or three times. He likes Transformers, and will quiz me about them and other things. He's the type of collector/fanboy a lot of people on this and other message boards make fun of but I try to be nice to him and legitimately engage him in discussion. He was with his dad one time and I could almost swear the old man got a tear in his eye watching us discuss toys as I'm guessing the young man doesn't have many friends.
Either that or he was brokenhearted that his son is reduced to conversing with the likes of ME, but I'll choose to look at the matter positively. I've made two good friends in collecting over the years by running into the 20/30-something set in the action figure aisle. Pleased with these contacts, I've attempted to strike up conversations with people before but I've often got the "I'm normal and you're a dork so go away" vibe from them (their loss-one of my friends has about 25% of his collection thanks to me and my telephone tips as I make the rounds more than he does) so these days I don't speak unless spoken to. I will sometimes offer to help people who look like puzzled parents digging through action figures looking for something specific. I did that a lot with the movie Transformers when they were really big. You sound exactly like me, word for word. Are you my long lost brother? lol. Although I use my gut instinct before I attempt a conversation to determine whether they're a true collector or not, because scalpers are heavy competition in my area. (Which means I have to be at Target and Toy-R-Us right before they open, and I schedule my 3 Wal-Mart rounds inbetween.) My gut instinct's always been right so far, and I've met some pretty cool Joe fans whom I network with every time there is a new product released in my area. (Heck, one friend even puts Robotech Valkyries on his U.S.S. Flagg! Now that's cool in my book!) Luckily, it's way easy to tell a puzzled parent from and Evil-Bayer, and if I can't find the toy for them, I tell them the stores I've recently been to that probably have it, and which stores that I'm about to go to that might have it. |

If I see somebody checking out the Joes while I'm there, I'll usually do what I can to help out. Then I'll ask them if they frequent any Joe sites. I've run into a couple different Tankers that way. We'll typically point each other to whatever else we've seen that day. The Tanker community is cool like that.
There is an "official greeting" that some of the guys came up with (all in good fun, of course). I haven't been brave enough to try to execute it, but look it up. You're sure to get a laugh out of it. |

usually im a very quiet, to myself person,
but whenever im in the joe aisle, and another person walks up, i always ask who theyre looking for, and tell them i can probably help them out...sometimes you meet another tanker, other times the people give you the stink eye, and think, your the guy buying all my joes....but usually, i end up talking to strangers for a good 20 minutes about their collection...and usually try to recuit them to the tank
