This is a question I have deliberated with for years...and the answer that meets my original intent is to have 12 of every builder from 82-94...an even ODA. Even that at times seems unattainable as I am very far from being complete. Every time something new comes out I toy with the idea of building an army with it but finances, space, and the sheer magnitude of the task keep me grounded to my original intent. I started collecting Joes because of the original line and for me, that is where my heart is. Although I have grabbed one of every (minus rares) single carded new figure that has come out, I haven't opened any for fear of redirecting my collection to the newer stuff which I think is great and worthy of display. So...the answer to your question is...assess your resources (money, room, time) and your heart and see what you get from that. I will say however that few things look cooler than a 100+ army of anything standing in rank and file on a shelf...but that is up to you...cheers!

My army building is restricted the squads. No less than 2 but up to 12. Depends on the squad type.

I generally go in multiples of 3. 3 is a fireteam, good for an operational specialist squad such as Eels. 6 is a squad. 24 is a platoon. I tend to think army building far beyond that is excessive (for me at least), though I do have almost 3 platoon's worth of troopers. Generally I try to build 1-2 squad's worth.
Vehicles I usually go 3, but occasionally 6. On the Joe side, the greenshirts are the only army builder troops - between training and experience, they don't need to equal the Cobra numbers. I usually army build 2 of each vehicle for the Joes It comes down to preference, space available and money one is willing to spend. Last edited by Moses; 03-07-2009 at 02:00 PM.. |

I don't se how you guys afford to buy all of these guys! WOW! I am impressed with the numbers! There's no way I can do much army building...I think the only building I have done is by getting the 5-packs & 7-packs....

It depends on what you want them for.
I like to feel I have mostly blueshirts in my COBRA army. Between the Wave 2 silver symbol trooper and the ARAH TRU Infantry ones I have, half of my COBRA army is blueshirts, then of the other half, maybe 15% are Vipers and 15% are Crimson Guards of different types, and the rest. |

I have about 25 Legions troopers. The rest are officers: 15 Air trooper style and 6 grey-gear wave 1 astyle.
Then about 14 silver logo troopers. And about 11 CGs.

Generally I go for four troopers and one officer for a total of five. That said, I also go for pairs. My collections is as thus...
Crimson Guards - 4 guards 1 Officer BATS - 4 BATS 1 Red Face BAT as leader Snow Serpents - 2 Eels - 2 Vipers - 4 (though I will get the new five pack due out so that will increase) Troopers - 15 troopers 2 short sleeve, 1 Bazooka, 2 Jet pack and 6 Officers (my true builder)

i think 10 is a nice amount, i like to keep my armys in smaller groups, but this is just my opinion, it does look cool to have alot of the same figure in a army though, but i dont have the room or money for this so i keep it at 10 at the most.

Here is my 2 Cents:
I have around 45 +/- Blue shirts. I like them best so I'll keep buying them until I can't afford anymore. I have 8 Bazooka Troopers because of their job, I figure they would either be a small separate unit, or dispersed one per infantry squad. I have about 11 TeleVipers I figure that they would probably be one per infantry squad too. However I also like to use them at all my computer and gun stations in the Cobra Terror Drome. I have 8 Snow Serpents. I figure that should be enough since they are specialized Elite troopers. I might buy a few more, but not many. I have 2 Eels, and 2 Divers. I would like to have about 4-6 Divers and 4-6 Eels too. But again Eels are supposed to be special Elite troopers so I don't need too many of them. I have about 9 Cobra Officers. (the Blue ones) I figure that I should only have about 10 or so because they are supposed to lead my Cobra Army. I have 19 Crimson Guards, 2 C.G. Squad Leaders and one C.G. Officer. I figure that should be enough. Again they're supposed to be Elite. I also like to use them to Guard Cobra Commander, and other High Ranking Cobras. Finaly I use Crimson Guards inside my Cobra Head Quarters too. I'm not much into the Vipers, although I really liked them as a kid. I just think that their helmets are just too unrealistic. I know you would not wear something like that in the Desert or steamy jungles of Cobra Island! ...REALLY... I use Vipers to pilot my Fangs, and other small Cobra air vehicles where their helmets seem more realistic to their job.

I army build in fire teams, and build squads from there. Jesus, i think that was the nerdiest thing I've ever said.
Anywho... since I've already dug myself this far. 1 "Officer" - Grenadier 3 Riflemen 1 Machine Gunner That is the basic fire team "formula." Then you form squads up from there.
