What toys are you "passing" on? And why?
A little background: * As a JOE collector I buy one of every package variation of EVERY ITEM Produced to keep in mint condition (unopened). * I will also open one of everything I like. So at the end of the day I may buy 4 BATS and open 2. I may buy two Fang/Claws and open one. You get the idea. Buy a comic pack and not open it. In several past comments on the board I have joked about a need for a 12 step program or psychiatric therapy for my collecting habits (as I buy way more than I ever need). Between Joes & SW (and everything else) I have an insurance policy on my toys that could seem like a car payment to another. Here's the beef: I will find out if I have a job by the end of next week (corp downsizing). Normally, in any given day I will stop at retailers about 2-6 stops per day. In the last 3 weeks (as I know these announcements are coming) I have maybe stopped at a retail store if even 2 times in one week. This is a MAJOR shift in my habits. Here's what I've been passing on. To most of you this will be rather minor. For those with the same collecting habits as I have you will realize this is a big deal: Cobra Rattler (kept 1 & returned my other) Conquest - Returned to retailer Ripper - Did not buy any Torch - Did not buy any DVD Packs - have not purchased any since the first wave. I wish I would have as they are nowhere to be seen now. TRU 3 packs - Passed on all Ultimate Battle Packs - Passed 12" Waves - Returned or passed on ALL of them! Ultimate Battle Pack - Returned to Target at $62. Later a fellow-tanker hooked me up with a $25 one on clearance (thank God). Since wave 12 - Scaled back to 1/each fig no exceptions (none to open). Upcoming Figures - GI JOE Rise Of Cobra: (only based on what we've seen so far). I will only buy: Zartan, Shipwreck, Duke (Khaki), Baroness and Scarlett (Battle Armor w/the better head). I will be passing on: * Movie Figs - SE, SS, Heavy Duty, Scarlett (pony tail), Hawk, Duke & all others in Battle Armor or accellerator suits, Breaker, Rip Cord, Mars Vipers. * ALL movie vehicles & 12" figures. Is there anyone else out there who is cutting back based on economy? Lack of creativity in the upcoming line? Have you also heard tough job news? or... is this the time to buy for you?

I passed on the greatest DVD battles pack the sea and air TRU 3 packs, got the IG one though. I only got the Cobra set of the new cartoon color 5 packs. I probably wont get any movie figures because there is no nostalgic appeal.

I pass on a lot to tell the truth. I've posted this before but I'm not a big fan of ninjas and bats. Go figure. Right now I don't have any bats but for some strange reason my ninja collection is growing.

That is because ninjas are masters of stealth. They have sneaked in and infiltrated your collection. If you check again tomorrow there will probably be three more, if you can see them.

I bought one Rattler and one Conquest for my boys for Xmas, but passing on them myself. I found the overall quality to be crap. Passed on Shark and Firebat, don't like either one that much, passed on Wraith, bought a Matt Tracker strictly to trade, sending it out on Monday, passed on Famous Battles pack, it's junk, passing on Resolute pack, no need for more repaints. Passing on all Python Patrol stuff, don't like the concept. Passed on green shirts, don't like em. Passed on new Joe 5 pack, happy with versions I have. Passed on most comic packs, cause I didn't want more and more repaints.

Passed on all Resolute, Matt Tracker, Pilot Scarlett, Cobra Flint, Single Carded Torch and Ripper, The Firefly/Greenshirts TRU Pack (Might get one now that they have been reported on clearance), Greatest Battles DVD pack, Tan Awe Striker, all 12" Figures (Might get 12" CC just for the Map of Cobra Island if he get's clearanced), and I will be skipping ALL of the Movie Line.

I have not "HAD" to cut back yet,but I have. Job security and the economy, have me a little worried that I should be building a nest egg to try and live on should I lose my job.Severence only goes so far.I consider myself lucky that so far my job seems secure, but that could change tommorrow and this economy(despite what anybody in washington says)is not going to get any better any time soon.I don't believe in white lies or false hope.I choose to acknowledge a problem, prepare for it,and face it head on.That being said I am def not buying the Movie toys for either Trans or Joe. In a normal world I probably would have purchased some or even most because I actually like some of it.I have also resorted to keeping any purchase below $50.00. So that rules out any big or cool p[laysets for me unless they hit clearance. It is such a bad time for Hasbro to try and re-invent the line because I think it would have really done well outside of economic woes.If the movie line fails we may not see another shot at resurrecting the franchise.Hasbro has more than a considerable amount of money invested in this "bringing back Joe"crusade and I am grateful for the attempt.I think in the end though the economy will squash that attempt, causing Hasbro to lose a massive amount of money.I hope Joe pulls through. This will be Joes toughest test EVER!!!!!!!!!
Yo Joe! War

I have a problem with buying everything too. If I don't like a certain something, I try to keep it MOC/MIB. Sometimes tha's difficult. The crappier pieces of the modern Joe line I own include:
-Buzzer -Gung-Ho (could'nt help it the first time. 5pk) -CP Ripper and Torch (Dammit, all three Noks are garbage. But what can we do until they're resculpted?) -Rock N' Roll -Shipwreck W3 (the new one is great!) -Baroness 1st 5pk (the new one is super-great in comparison.) -Scarlett (the pointy chin, horizontal neck thing is crap.) -Roadblock (hate to say it but all his figs have been on the crappy side so far. Blue-eyed, pencil-neck, peanut-head, smaller than Bazooka, needs a new sculpt!) -Steeler (nice face sculpt though.) -Iron Grenadier I'm sure there are others. I just ain't looked at them in a while. On the occasion that a product just offends me with it's exsistance, I do not buy. Those include: -Whatever that VvV DVD pk is. So easy to stay away from, I don't even know it's actual name. -The Resolute 5pk.

There is no "need" to purchase so much. I'm a single fig MOC collector, so maybe it's not my place to give advice. But I am able to curb the impetus to over purchase, thus saving money. I only buy one of what I like, not one of everything - excluding 25th logo MOC, of which I completed. I also don't buy vehicles and DVD packs, or TRU/Target exclusives. I scored an UBP on clearance, but other than that - nill. Save your pennies and control the urge, bro. Anything post 25th logo is not needed anyway. The shelves are dry of anything worthwhile, IMO. Hold off for that "special/can't miss" release. Be patient. |

i cut the resolute line and movie line toys out of my collecting. the 25th/modern line is really the only draw for me really so it wasn't too difficult of a choice to make. i never got into the tf animated/movie lines either.
i cut out buying one of everything 25th/modern for moc collection back when all the battle packs and movie sets came out. now that resolute and movie line figures are out, my modern line collecting has been made easier other than the general lack of available product. i'd sell/trade off my entire comic pack collection if it were worth the effort. i continue to buy vehicles but for play and customs. i can't afford to keep boxed vehicle collection going. i still have cases of the first target exclusives to get rid of. i'll keep my rattler/conquest mib though. i wanted to get the tmnt anniversary line but i don't have the budget for it anymore. i never like the sw toys and i could care less about the various marvel lines so my focus is very limited and directed right now. fyi, i'll know by the end of spring if i still have a job... i've been putting money away just in case this happens so it won't be disasterous but it won't be easy thats for sure. just means i swap places with my wife and be mr. mom/daddy daycare or whatever you want to call it.
