Obviously the exact system from Warhammer 40k wouldn't work, but I still think it lends itself quite well to a tabletop strategy game. The difference in heroes gives your two factions a very different quality of play.
Cobra will require army builders and will field their troops in larger squads, lead by heroes and augmented by specialist troopers or in some instances even whole squads of them (I.e. ninja vipers, BATs, night vipers, toxo-vipers, etc.) Thus Cobra can modify units through the introduction of specialists. Heroes will modify the squad but also have an effect on the battlefield as a whole. Basically, they're your space marines. Verhicles are still important, because they can provide cover, be used as transports for infantry, etc. The cost will have to be commensurate with their power, but in general, there would be a lot of ways to counter vehicles and a single HISS tank would be less powerful and versatile than a VIPER team. GI JOE on the other hand would normally favour smaller forces composed of highly specialized individuals, with few grunts. The possibility to field grunts in JOE squads to soak up damage or as vehicle drivers, etc. still makes sense. For instance if you use a squad of 3 RAM cycles from 25th, CPL Breaker becomes a grunt RAM driver as opposed to a unique character. But otherwise, JOE squads can include 1 leader Joe and a specific number of other JOEs, giving abilities from ranged combat, melee, sniper, infiltration, anti-tank, anti-air, etc. So you can either field jack of all trade JOE squads or specialists by combining JOEs with similar abilities. Pound for pound your JOES are way tougher, but as they are far fewer losing even just a few can significantly degrade your combat effectiveness and versatility. These guys are more Deathwing or Blood Angels for you Warhammer players. Map grids can work, but I think they harm the organic feel you get from using the toys. Especially since they would hamper your ability to field vehicles. Your vehicles are already scaled for the toys, so from a visual and strategic sense, they're perfect the way they are. The only problem comes from the ones that are too big to put on the table. I agree with others that making the game would be incredibly fun though it might be hard to find opponents willing to give it a try. |
