Yesterday I purchased wave 1 of the comic packs. I have decided to do my own personal reviews of the comic packs. The first one I'm starting with is the Duke and Cobra Commander 2 pack.
First I will start with the comic. As a kid I followed the comics but I could never get them consistently. Therefore I never knew all the details and the full stories. I don't remember having this issue, so I was excited to read it. The first thing I noticed is the tribute cover art. I personally think the new art is awful. I enjoyed the original art much more but I understand why they changed it. However I'm not a fan of it. As for the comic itself, I really enjoyed it. I like the features in CC's helmet that they displayed. Also the confrontation between Major Bludd and Destro was cool. Of course my favorite part of issue 24 was the appearance by Zartan at the end. All in all it was entertaining. Appearances by key characters, battle between Storm Shadow, Roadblock and Gung Ho and a nice air chase between Duke and CC. I give the issue a 8/10. Now the figures, I will start with Duke. This is my second Duke as I haven't picked up a carded wave 4 yet. Considering all the repaints, I don't mind another Duke. He has never been a favorite of mine but I understand the importance of him. The most glaring thing is of course his colors. To be honest they look horrible. I'm not a fan at all. They are very accurate to the comic though. It's just hard on the eyes, however I do like the bright silver grenade. The sidearm does fit better in the holster than my 5 pack one for some reason. It's nice getting a new gun but I do prefer his 5 pack M16 more. I do like the fact that he does come with a matching backpack. I don't like the idea of giving the wave 4 one Gung hos. All in all I give this figure a 5/10. Without the backpack it would have been 4. As for Cobra Commander, when I first looked at the pictures I hated his colors. After having him in hand, I love them. They look very cool. In fact I prefer him over all my CC's except the Hooded one. This is my 4th CC now and my complaints haven't changed. Why can't he hold his bloody gun? It's so frustrating trying to get him in a pose holding his pistol. I have to resort to just clipping it to his back. Also if you were to play with him, you would have to keep his helmet off. Any little bit of movement and his helmet comes tumbling off. In my opinion it would have been better to not make his helmet removable. Overall CC is a great character but I believe Hasbro is going a little overboard with him. With 2 5 pack versions and 2 carded versions and 3rd on the way, I don't think we needed a comic version so soon. Overall I give this figure a 6/10. Considering everything I give this comic pack a solid 7/10. Things I would have done differently would to keep the original artwork. Also I think it would have been better to put Rock N Roll and Major Bludd as the 2 figures. Granted they both had small roles in the comic, but It would have made it more desirable and interesting. I recommend getting this 2 pack if for anything else to get your copy of Doc. I already filled out my form and placed my sticker on. Now I'm going to check out the Scarlet and Hawk pack. The next review will come soon. |

For the next review, I will discuss the Hawk and Scarlett 2 pack.
Again I will start with the Comic. I had this comic as a child, it was great reading it all over again. I enjoyed it more today than I did when I was a kid. I can see this being a concern with all comic packs, but I just can't get over the new tribute art. I really dislike it. As for the actual comic, I think it's a great introduction to G.I. JOE. Baroness is the star of this comic imo. My favorite part is when Flash casually blasts through the steel pipe. Overall I give the issue a 7/10. For the figures I will start with Hawk. He is the obvious reason why most of you will purchase this pack. His figure is awesome. The colors are great, however the silver is a little too bright. He's very detailed and comes with the appropriate weapons. He is a must have. My only 2 complaints are minor. The stand says G.I. JOE HAWK, I don't understand why it just doesn't say Hawk. The 2nd is he has the wrong ranking on his FC. FC's are very important to me and this really bothers me. Overall I give Hawk a 9.5/10. Next is the dud of this 2 pack. Scarlett is another repaint. If you haven't picked up the 5 pack or wave 4 edition I suggest you do. Her color scheme in this pack is awful imo. The light purple or lavender really doesn't work. I do like that her crossbow is silver. It's a nice touch, but I of course like the original better. I really don't recommend this Scarlett, however in order to get Hawk you must bite the bullet and get her. Just keep reminding to yourself that you can rescue Doc. Overall I give her a 4/10. Overall I give this comic pack a 7/10. Hawk is the main reason for this. He is a great edition to the 25th line. It also gives you a chance to read the very 1st comic and rescue Doc. Next I will review the 3rd pack in wave 1, SS/SE. |

Time for the 3rd and last review for Wave 1, the SE/SS pack.
For this review I will start with Storm Shadow. How many SS's does one person need? Well I'm going to say one more. Yes I know we already have the 2 5 packs and wave 4. We were also treated with the G.I. JOE edition wave 1, and we have more on the way. However I truly recommend this version. The blue trim is awesome! This one is clearly my favorite. You do get the same old weapons but there blue to match. He is easy to play with and can easily hold all his equipment. Overall I give him a 9/10. Next is his significant other, Snake Eyes. I have the same complaints with SE as I do with Storm Shadow and Cobra Commander. How many does one person really need? With this being the 4th(5th if you count the Black Timber variant) and scheduled for at least 4 more. I'm personally getting tired of what used to be one of my favorite characters. Trying to keep an open mind and giving the figure a chance. He isn't any different than the wave 5 except he is all blue. Now I loved it on SS, but on SE it just doesn't appeal to me. One complaint on the packaging they show V2 SE on the front, its minor but it bothers me. Overall I'm going to give this SE a 5/10. For the last part of this review I will discuss the comic. This is truly a must have comic. The silent mission is awesome, it shows why SE is one of the best characters in the G.I. JOE world. My favorite part of the issue is when SE is parachuting onto the island. I'm also impressed with Scarlett outsmarting SS. Towards the end when they show the matching tattoos, that is just too cool. I also liked seeing Destro playing with his mini figures and admiring Baroness, it was a nice touch. My only complaint is again the tribute cover art. This is a must have comic, especially with the 21.5 coming in wave 3. I give this issue a 9.5/10. Overall I like this comic pack. I think it would have been better to pair Scarlett with SS in this pack. Then in the Hawk pack thrown in a Baroness or even a CC (I can't believe I just said that). Overall I'm recommending this pack for the Storm Shadow and the superb comic. Also as I have stated earlier, Doc appears to be a must have and the comic packs are the only way to obtain him. I give the 2 pack an overall of 8/10. |

Interesting reviews and thanks for posting them.
BTW, I agree with you about the tribute art. It totally sucks and it would have been better for true nostalgia's sake to keep the original covers, or have the original artists do updated versions. To vet out the covers to a semi-realistic like Greg Horn just didn't make sense to me. Possibly to lend the figure releases more realism and "grit" for adult collectors? Eh, they suck and that's that. As for the figures themselves; The only two of the 6 you mentioned that I really like are Hawk and Scarlett. The rest seem like redo fever to me. |

I received wave 2 yesterday and for the first review I will start with the Dreadnok 2 pack. First I will start with the figures because that is the main reason I'm getting this 2 pack. The dreadnoks have always been favorites of mine. It's great being able to complete the original trio.
First I will review Torch. Torch has always been a favorite and this edition is no exception. The detail is fantastic. His jacket and tattoo is awesome to look at. He comes with his backpack and of course his torch. It's difficult to get him to hold his torch however. I do love the holster on his right leg that you can hook the torch onto. His head seems a little awkward and his neck is very small. If you have his head turned to one side he looks ridiculous. I also don't like that he has lighter blue jeans than Buzzer. I also don't like the fact that his stand says "dreadnok Torch". It looks funny next to Buzzer. Overall this is a must have figure. I give him a 9/10. Next I will discuss Ripper. As a child Ripper was one of the very few figures I did not have. It feels great to finally have him. The sculpt on this figure is superb. Much like Torch the detail is awesome. He comes with his backpack and the jaws of life. He also comes with his famous rifle. I prefer to display him only with his rifle. He can hold both weapons with ease unlike Torch. I must say he is a must have. The only complaints are the lighter jeans and his stand. When the trio is displayed next to each other, Buzzer looks odd. It shouldn't be that way. Overall I give Ripper a 9.5/10. For the final part of the review I will talk about the comic. It is a reprint of issue 30. Issue 30 is a great read. It features the dreadnoks very well. It shows how dangerous they can really be. It also shows there ignorance and cowardness. They are suppose to setup a sneak attack for Cobra Commander. They do what is needed, however then they decide to do more damage on there own. They wind up foiling the mission for CC and leaving him when he is being attacked. This issue also features Zartan and his knack for disguise. Again my only real complaint is the tribute cover art. This art isn't so bad, however you look at Ripper and Torch on the cover and they look nothing like the figures. Overall the Comic receives a 9/10. This is a must have 2 pack. Whether or not you like the noks, you have to respect there history with G.I. JOE. This is a great addition to the 25th line. I give this a must buy and a 9.5/10 review. |
