Hi there!
firts of all, my name is Björn from the Netherlands, and I am new here on hisstank.com. I am also a transfan, but really into the 25th line now. Last week my ebay-order arrived: all the carded figs from wave 1,2 and 3 together with the 3 boxed 5-packs. Unpacking them I stumbled on the Cobra Trooper from the Cobra Legions set. He has a red mouthpiece and no gloves on, and they're called 'infantry forces' on their ID card. Now I am confused: I always thought that Vipers were at the bottom of all Cobra ranks (standard Vipers, of course). But the card of this Trooper states that: 'they have to work their way up to becomes Cobra Viper forces'. So what's the what on this? Have I been wrong all the time? Everybody, have a great 2008! |

Hi Schiedam!
I hope I can answer your question correctly... Cobra Troopers are the basic Infantry force for Cobra. The "Green Shirts" or "Grunts". As they climb the ranks of Cobra, they become Vipers, then Crimson Guardsmen, then Shadow Crimson Guardsmen. That is, unless the Trooper in question chooses to branch off in to a specialized field. If anyone has a better rationale than this, please feel free to correct me, as I definitely don't want to feed out misinformation. Welcome to the Tank once again! |

it depends on which continuity you choose to obide buy, the original RAH line or the new sculpt line.
the filecard for the original Viper in the RAH line clearly states they are the bottom of the pyramid for Cobra and are the unit all Cobra operatives start at: http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/86/viper.shtml in the new sculpt line, Hasbro decided to change that and make the standard Cobra troops the bottom, probably because they look more generic than Cobra Vipers: http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/04/cobratrooper.shtml of course, if you follow this new ranking structure, you also have to follow the other change which eliminated Cobra Officers entirely, and made them just basic Troops as well that lead Cobra Trooper Units: http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/04/cobraofficer3.shtml the two lines contradict each other, and Hasbro clearly rearranged Cobra ranks, so you just have to choose to follow the original vision of Cobra from RAH or the re-imagined version of VvV. |

I think somewhere else I read that Vipers were just Troopers with body armor, and that the Viper replaced the Trooper. Someone else theorized that Vipers were like the Marines... different, but not higher in rank necessarily than Troopers.

Well, I've always gone by the Operations Manual that came with the 12" CC back in the 90's:
http://www.yojoe.com/12inch/92/manua...ommander.shtml Course, it shows that officers have red insignia. |

http://www.yojoe.com/12inch/92/manua...ommander.shtml Course, it shows that officers have red insignia. that being said, the standard Cobra Trooper is absent in that structure, and one could argue that they were simply integrated into the Cobra Vipers as the basic infantry troops. that would be incorrect, and the evidence supports my position. as the bottom of the pyramid and the starting point for any Cobra Operative, as the Vipers are clearly identified as in their original filecard, that would clearly rank Vipers as the military equivalent as an E-1, and at best E-3 (as you can enter the military as high as E-3 as an enlisted if you have some college experience, for example). those are the bottom of military ranks. but the standard Cobra Trooper is clearly stated on its original filecard as being the equivalent of an E-4, meaning that back in 1982 when Cobra was first created by Hasbro, even though the Vipers were not created yet, it was still conceived that there were Cobra ranks lower than the standard E-4 Cobra Trooper, even though they had yet to be identified or created by Hasbro, and the Cobra Trooper was never intended to be the lowest rank of Cobra. Cobra Troopers are apparently more than standard infantry troops, which is all Vipers are, even if only slightly, as evidenced by their clearly defined higher rank. so, in keeping with the original Cobra structure from RAH, Vipers are the bottom and regular Cobra Troops lie somewhere in the middle of the Cobra equivalent to military enlisted ranks at E-4. |

The only thing I can figure is that it's because the Baroness was a "dead" character at the time. In fact, as far as the toys are concerned, Baroness went MIA for what, 13 years?
