you know thinking about it the best way to tell what the command structure of Cobra is to look at Walmart. From the in-store employees (who also have blue shirts) to the CEO. I mean after all they are all they are both evil, ruthless terrorist organizations determined to rule the world.

By the way -- just to add to this debate since it's been brought back up -- have you noticed the 25th Legions trooper's filecard? It states that troopers are the bottom of the barrel trying to work their way up to becoming a viper. Perhaps this is Hasbro's current attempt to resolve the issue.

http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/07/cobratrooper8.shtml but there shouldn't be any confusion, there are simply two ranking structures: the RAH ranking structure, where Vipers were the bottom, and the VvV ranking structure which Hasbro has continued with into the 25th line, where Troopers are the bottom. the two simply don't coincide with the other and can't be adhered to together, so you simply have to choose one or make up your own. but whichever you choose doesn't mean the other doesn't or never existed. |

I'll be really curious to see what Hasbro does with the 25th Viper's filecard. They may change it to reflect the newer structure, but I wonder if that would irk people who want the card to remain as it was on the vintage figure.

They changed it on the Cobra trooper between '82 and 2007. My guess is that they will continue the VvV continuity. Personally, I like that one better.
After the viper was introduced in '86, I can't recall seeing regular blue shirt troopers anymore in the ARAH continuity. It seems they may have been phased out and replaced with vipers as the basic infantry unit. Makes some sense that as Cobra grew, they upgraded their training and equipment. |

I wouldn't be surprised if they used the original filecard for the Viper and continued to confusion of the two different ranking structures. after all, people keep presenting the Legions Trooper filecard as an example of the lower rank of the trooper but Hasbro simultaneously released the original 25th Cobra Trooper with the original RAH filecard that clearly states they are the equivalent to an E-4, which is the middle of the enlisted rank, not the bottom. http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/07/cobratrooper6.shtml hasbro has released contradictory filecards simultaneously with the Cobra Trooper in the Cobra box set (and single pack) and the Legions Trooper with the lower rank, so doing so with the Viper wouldn't be that big of a deal. I find the "E/O-4 equivalent" rank status funny. Putting "equivalent" to a rank or pay grade denotes a para-military structure.
I also find the pay grades of older file cards to be unreliable as a number of the Joes themselves have had changes to their ranks, namely (General) Hawk (O-6 > O-7), Snake-eyes (E-5 > E-7), and Flint (E-6 > WO-3 > WO-2). Hawk's promotion to Brigadier General was made cannon, Snake Eye rank was Ret Con to E-7 as if he was always a Sergeant First Class (see classified), and Flint's jump around with ranks is just absurd! In the case of Green Shirts, their status has been significantly marginalized from the early days of the "well trained, highly skilled" troop statues to justify "E/O-4 equivalent" ranks. If any thing: Cobra Trooper = E-1 Cobra Officer (black "V's) = E-4 (corporal) Basic Viper = E-3 Viper Leader and Crimson Vipers = E-5 [weapon/environment specialists]-Vipers and Eels = E-4 (specialist) [field specialists]-Vipers = O-1 Cobra Scientists, Engineers and Intelligence Personal = O-2 to O-4 Cobra Field Officers (sliver & gold "V"s) = O-1 to O-5 Air- and Motor-Vipers = O-1 Armored Division Personal and Pilots = O-3 Aerospace Personal = O-4 CG Immortals = O-2* Immortal Armored Division = O-3* Crimson Guards = O-4* Crimson Guard Commanders = O-5* Storm-Shadow, Dr. Mindbender, The Baroness(*?) Copperhead, Major Bludd, and Tomax & Xamot* = O-6 Cobra Commander = O-10 * Political Officer statues Well that how I see it. Not that all of the ranks are purely "equivalent" to what they do and their pecking order. This notes Cobra Officers as higher rank then a Basic Viper, but Vipers do not take orders from such officers as they are just squad leaders for entry-level troops. Any one with Political Officer statues can exert authority to even higher ranking personal as they are the advocates to Cobra Commander's will. Cobra Officer was an odd one as I find them being used as entry-level squad leaders, high-ranking field officers, or both. Then I remembered that Cobra Officers have diffident color "V"s on their helmets (black, silver and gold), so naturally one must be a Squad Leader (black) and the others are Field Officers (silver and gold). Its not to hard to think how adding other chrome colors, like brass and copper can rally add to the number of ranks (but this is best for home-brewed repaints). |
