I'm pretty pleased with the announcement of the Cobra Island 7-packs. I think just about everyone is.
But what concerns me is the movie line and the effect it may have on anything GI Joe related in the future.
I was one of those kids who was lucky enough to have the Kenner Indiana Jones figures. Then, for some reason, Indy disappeared from the toy shelves for years. When I was down in Disney World I got the park exclusive figures, but they were poor to say the least. I kept waiting on new Indy figures.
Finally, they announced a new Indiana Jones figure line to go along with the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. They announced figures for that movie, as well as ones from all the classic Indy movies. I was thrilled!
Then, the movie blew. And blew hard. I walked into the toy aisles and saw Mutt Williams by what seemed to be in the thousands. The sculpts were sub-par and the overall figures were blah.
I was able to get Raiders of the Lost Ark figures & Last Crusade, but never saw a single Temple of Doom on the shelf. Then I heard the rest of the planned line was cancelled. Retailers were dropping these figures like hot potatoes.
I'm just hoping that the GI Joe movie does as well Transformers so we can continue to see more 25th style figures in years to come. Cover Girl, Big Boa, Law & Order, Jinx, Zarana, and many others need to see the light of day.
I'm going into the movie with an open mind. I did that with TF and loved it. But I was also very impressed with the Transformers trailer. Not so much with GI Joe, other than Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, & Baroness. Hopefully, this movie rocks, the figures sell well, and GI Joe lives on.
If not, many classic characters may just never be made.

G.I.Joe will always be around in one form or another. Even if they reduce the quantity of figs, it's not going the way of Indy.
Cobra has won. The Battle is over. Or is it?

It's a shame about Indiana Jones. "Raiders" is one of my favorite movies of all time. The new Indy toys are great... I use the German soldiers, Russian soldiers, Cairo swordsmen/thugs and Ugha warriors as "extras" for my Joe missions.
The G.I. Joe movie toys will probably do better because even if someone doesn't like the movie, the figures and vehicles can still be incorporated into a fans Joeverse. The movie toys are building on established collections of toys, and a franchise that's over 25 years old. So, if the movie fails, it's no guarantee that the toys will also fail. And if the movie doesn't do well, Hasbro can just pick right back up where it left off with the 25th line, and we'll all cheer and start buying their stuff again.
Just my 2 cents.
Why aren't there more Joes from the Deep South?
And would it kill Hasbro to give us a Marine Corps Officer?

But after seeing the 1st teaser with them jumping around and dodging missles in power suits, I'm a bit nervous.

I could draw a detailed picture of the vast differences between G.I. Joe and Indiana Jones as toylines, but the bottom line is that it's highly unlikely that G.I. Joe will disappear forever if the movie and movie toys fail miserably.
However I do strongly believe it well may end up "hiatused" and could very likely return in a non-ARAH inspired form if that were the case. They would probably eventually return to the ARAH-based mythos...but it might take a few "Sgt. Savage" and "Extreme" kind of reboots before they get there.
All that having been said...I don't think the movie and movie line are going to fail miserably. Fan reaction is a very poor indicator of whether success is in the making...just look at the Transformers fanbase prior to the release of the movie and movie toys.

The main difference is that Indy was only out for a year and was not a continuous line with the history of Joe. The movie could come out and really blow, but the figures will continue. (especially given how well they have done up until now)

Even if the movie sucks, and trust me its going to. I dont think it will go away. If anything it will spark some sort of intrest in it for people who really arent as hardcore. The comic book, places like this, how well the 25th line is doing etc. The movie comes out in when, Aug? I think were safe until Christmas. Then we'll take it from there......I jumped back into this late so I really hope they stick around for awhile

I think the movie toys will go the way of Indiana Jones, but then Hasbro will realize their mistake (Again) and start treating the collectors with some respect (maybe).

G.I. Joe has been a presence in the toy aisles for most of the last 27 years. The same can't be said for Indy, unfortunately. Plus I think Hasbro handled the Indy line miserably. They treated it like it was a line for kids when it should have been marketed to collectors. They bogged it down with 12" figures, role-playing toys, and crappy playsets, most of which are still clogging shelves, while making fans jump through hoops to get a measley six figures from "Temple of Doom." So, it really isn't the same as G.I. Joe but I can see the concern. The movie figures are one thing, but I am a little bit worried that all the additional stuff (role-playing, Rapid Rollers, etc.) will warm the pegs and send a message to retailers that G.I. Joe doesn't sell. If that happens, it could spell trouble for the future of the Modern line.
And just to clarify, this isn't an "end of the line, the sky is falling" type of post. I hate those.
