Even if the movie does suck, and i don't know if it will, 'cause guess what? I havn't seen it..
The line will keep going. There's a 40 year history there, and with our 25th line on hiatus, it'll come back. Hasbro Knows we're out there buying'em, So they'll be back. On the other hand, if the movie toys do great, I'm sure Hasbro will do what they said they were going to do, which is to merge the movie line with our line. I'm thinking we'll get waves with movie guys as well as classics.

Well, the quaility of the Indy figures was pretty craptastic. I intended to find an Indy figure, just one of them, to open and keep in my collection. Just one, from any of the movies, as long as he had the hat, whip, coat and a gun. Of the huge number of figures I looked at, I literally only found one figure that wasn't cross-eyes, or missing an eye or had paint on his pants or his sleeves went half way up the back of his hand. These are some of the things we're beginning to see in Joes. Since I get mine on the net, I haven't got te luxury of searchhing the pegs. The cross-eyed Quickkick I got in the DVD set is the only one I've ever seen in person, and I'm not going to pay 50 plus bucks for the one way up on the top shelf at the comic book store.
But when we're talking about Joe or Star Wars or Indy, we look at the lines from a collectors perspective. So, I've never really bought the idea that Wal-Mart Executive X is standing there on the aisle and opening these cases and wondering why only 2 figures sell out of a case of Indy figures. That's assuming a lot of effort and intricate interest on the part of a person or group that really has none. Indiana Jones figures sat on the shelves and that's all the retailers are looking at when they decide to increase or decrease orders. He-Man 2K was the same way. the stopped selling because the case assortments weren't up to the collectors standards because Mattel operated under the absurd assumption that this MOTU line was going to interest kids the way the original did. So, to keep the kids happy, there were 90% He-Man and Skeletor repacks or repaints in that line. The collectors shouted from every corner of the toy ailse and internet, but it was far too little too late. Retailers dropped the line and Mattel's hopes of regaining the glory days of the '80 went bust. Now, the accomodate the collectors community by releasing figures on the internet: only... Does this sound familiar to anyone? Now, G.I Joes are apparently a different matter. They're selling pretty damn well, but there's also a new movie to consider. So, I think maybe Hasbro has everything riding on the movie. They're bracing for the failure of the toy tie-in by priming collectors for the internet only market because if the movie fails, retailers won't touch joe. I know Joe has been around for 30 years and have done well enough to keep its head above water, but retailers didn't invest as much as they will in the movie toys. This is why most retailers had 4 or 5 pegs and maybe a couple of feet for Sigma, while Star Wars and Batman and Power Rangers and whatever had so much more room. They don't care if it's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra or G.I. Joe A Real American Hero 25th Anniversay. They just see a name brand and a bottom line that's got to be met. Maybe I'm wrong, though. |

It's very unlikely that would happen to the Joes. The retail stores don't order Joes as much as they used to do with IJ so they maintain their freshness as a collector and also they have better case ratios unlike the other line.

Absolutely right. The 25th line will come back as an internet-only line if the new movie sucks.
They could not do this for Indy because their licensing agreement with Lucasfilm required a higher output than an internet-only, collector-focused line would support. |

They may decrease in number at major retailors, but the classics will be back even if the movie crashes. THe only question will be where you can find them - most likely comic stores and online until Hasbro re-convinces major stores to carry around fall 2010. Mind you if the movie does well, we'll probably be in worse shape because we'll likely get the equivalent of the horrid TF animated line instead of classics.

gijoe has 25 yrs of sales under its belt, so it will never fall into the same category as indiana jones, but if your comparing the movie lines together then i will say the only thing they will have in common is both movie lines are a flop. this new gijoe movie line is awful, cant understand why hasbro would go this rout with joe but they did and they lost me as a buyer for the moment.

I highly doubt G.I. Joe as we know it is going to just vanish. Yeah the classic line will probably get put on the back burner while the movie stuff gets pushed but I think regardless of whether the movie and the merch is a hit or a flop, the classics will always be there for Hasbro to fall back on.
My guess is the vehicles will probably sell the most compared to the figures with the exception of kids buying up all the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow figures. Last edited by CallMeRotten; 02-20-2009 at 09:47 PM.. |

What I really don't understand is why doesn't hasbro see G.I. Joe as marketable as Star Wars, there are technically an infinite number of characters a vehicles to choose from, the mythos is long enough to go on at least for ten years before they need to pump out more stories or plots and cast members. There was a character on here that said and I quote, "Hasbro could release Lady Jaye dressed as Tinker Belle and I'd buy that shat!" Wouldn't we all? Except for Space, I recall he doesn't get all the different versions of characters. But think about it. All of the Joes dressed in their respective branches uniform, civilian clothes, Cover Girl dressed as a Cover Girl. Baroness in that sexy pink bathing suit from The Collector episode. All the Oktober Guard. All The Red Shadows. All the Dreadnocks. Playsets up the ying-yang. The Arena of Ssssport for example. (I know Cobra Coffee would scoop that up in a heart .) Castle Destro is another. A newly revised G.I. Joe headquaters much like that customizer with the huge basement has done. I'm not blind I realize Hasbro has to walk a very fine line between satisfying what makes good marketing sense and what makes sound economic sense. I'm telling you right now, the action figure isles are rarely populated with kids, unless there is a cool cartoon or movie, otherwise it's out of sight out of mind. My point is Hasbro should never make the mistake of thinking if they put out quality product of Joe, Transformers, Star Wars, that it won't sell, but remember I did say quality. Most of can agree the new movie figures are not on par with quality like our beloved modern era line. For example, I showed my ten year old nephew a carded BAT figure I have and a picture of the new Mars Trooper. I asked him, "which one would you rather play with,"? He said, "The BAT figure cause it's accessories are cooler", I told him the hand detaches to add those accessories and that sealed the deal. . . I rest my case.
