After a long conversation with WildWeasel over at theterrordrome.com, I wanted to share some facts and thoughts in the midst of all the conversation and spin going on about the NEW Cobra Island 7-packs. Understand, I would never rob someone of their opinion and can appreciate that their reality holds true to themselves although it may not be true in actuality. That is my only comprehension of why someone can bash something with such concise convection but STILL see the ’09 movie or purchase said item ANYWAY. Please read the following and leave your thoughts. Whether optimistic or pessimistic all are welcomed! I actually believe the two personality types can live in perfect harmony. My favorite example is the airplane. An optimist built the aircraft and a pessimist created the parachute.
Last year we thought things couldn’t get any better! We were overwhelmed with product, pre-orders, Q&A’s and informative conventions full of Joe goodness. What happened? Why did Hasbro release Waves 10, 11, 12 and 13 in sixty days? Why did Wave 5 vehicles get cancelled? Why hasn’t RESOLUTE been officially advertised by Hasbro? I’m still shocked that those RESOLUTE figures were shipped before pictures were released. Wasn’t the RESOLUTE cartoon supposed to be available on the web by now? Is there a similarity between getting four waves in sixty days and getting the same amount of new figures in the candid release of these two new 7-packs? Funny, wasn’t Outback and Strato-Viper in a cancelled vehicle pack? I thought the Alley-Viper showed up in Wal-Mart’s system as a single carded release? Lamprey and Night Creeper were names mentioned in upcoming comic packs, right? Personally, I’m grateful for these upcoming 7-packs because I honestly believe with all the abrupt changes we wouldn’t have gotten these figures no other way before 2010! I’ve already drawn my conclusion; I’d like to hear yours… FYI: If the G.I. Joe revenues hold or preferably beat expectations which include movie exposure, we will see single cards of several figures included in the controversial Cobra Island 7-packs! EDIT: Please excuse the vagueness. The topic is objective… ‘MY THEORY’ meaning ‘YOUR THEORY’. My aim is to draw those with an OPINION of the NEW 7-packs, whether it was right, wrong or indifferent, to this thread. Revealing my conclusion seemed like immaterial as I present different angles and references to create a contrast between 'RESULT' and 'REASON' of how the 7-packs came to be from an unbiased position. Hopefully everyone read the above post before they shared their requested and appreciated input? I've been impressed and enlighten with all that has participated thus far! I think it's a slap in the face to the fans. Online only? WTF? So we have to pay shpping and handling some of us on multiple orders means multiple S&H charges that should not have had to be paid. Am I excited about the figures being released in these packs? Oh c'mon who isn't. It's just the means I will have to go to to get the amount of troops I want is what is irritating about the whole situation. I have plenty of BAT's and as a result of Dr. M being put in this pack means I will have more than enough of him to go around more than Madonna did in her wild and crazy days........

I think Hasbro was just afraid that the upcoming movie line would erode away support of the people only buying the 25th and resolute stuff so they rushed out everything that they could just in case those people stopped caring about Joes entirely during the movie onslaught induced 25th lull. If only we had one more year before the movie hit.
IMO the 25th line peaked at Wave 9 and is on a slow descent into online only oblivion anyway. All I need is a new Low-Light and Dial Tone; doesn't really matter to me how I get them. *shrugs* |

This would be a great question to ask for the next Hasbro Q&A (although any tough question they seem to dodge)

No matter how hot something is it eventually changes and morphs into something else. Look at Star Wars and Marvel figures for example. Yeah, they're still on the pegs but both lines are drastically different from what they started out as. Maybe it's the packaging, the articulation, scale or straight out changes in appearance (cartoon or comic editions for example) but everything changes over time. I don't know what all this means. I'm questioning the logic behind it myself. I'm happy as hell to be getting some of these figures. However, I'm worried there is not going to be enough to go around for everybody....online exclusives are a real pain in the ass in my opinion. I think the bottom line is no matter how hot and how much we love the 25th style figures they will eventually fizzle out over time and I believe Hasbro understands this. I don't know, I'm just speculating. I just think it was inevitable that it would end and Hasbro would move onto something else.

As I've said on a couple of other threads:
It's not some kind of conspiracy. The buyers (retailers) did not want anymore waves of the modern figures. It really isn't Hasbro's doing. Since the movie line is a full line reset and not a rolling change, the retailers need time to put this into effect (totally new SKU's, planograms, endcaps, etc.) Hasbro has to switch gears entirely as well, devoting resources to the movie line. Instead of waiting until next year, they decided to go ahead and make the last two waves available to the fans through other means, namely online. Because online sales for exclusives like this are a much smaller market than retail, it only made sense for them to put the figures in a cost saving multipack.

I think the retailer support for the 25A line dried up, quite frankly. Wal-Mart et al likely decided they'd ordered enough revision cases and whatnot to be able to clear them out prior to the movie product. If they'd ordered heavily on upcoming waves, they might have been stuck with a lot of 25A product that hadn't sold by the time the changeover to the movie product (New SKU, etc...) happened.
Plus, given how fast many Wal-Marts clearanced out DVD packs and vehicles after Christmas, it seems Wally world is wanting to make room in the toy aisles for other things in the meantime (most likely Star Trek and Terminator toys, as well as Marvel Universe and X-Men Origins: Wolverine toys). I bet that's almost certainly why wave 5 of the vehicles was cancelled. Essentially, the 7-packs became about the only way that Hasbro could get these awesome figures to us prior to the movie product hitting. I would imagine we will likely see them single-carded in some form, but it probably won't be until 2010/After the movie stuff has come and gone. In the meantime, Hasbro's trying to both cater to some fan wishes and recoup a little bit of their investment on the new tooling for these packs. |

In the end, (I believe) we have gotten the majority of the fan favorites over the last couple of years. These 7 packs have great looking figures and fill a lot of gaps in the Joe universe. The 25th line may not last forever so the more individual figs they make the better. No repaints, no same characters in different uniforms. Paying S/H for online figures only does suck, but usually discount codes or no tax makes up for the difference. I feel that the movie figs (which I don't have interest in) will be filling the pegs in stores so if they don't offer these 7 packs online, they may not have been offered at all. I understand the concerns and complaints with the Tankers who have spoken up about this but when all is said and done, I believe (and hope) that most people will be happy with what they get and what is available to them. Think about how excited you have been with this line regardless of the faults you may find. We have cool figures for our shelves and brand new fodder for customs. We have HissTank which brings us all together in a fun, small community and all of this is due to the fact that Hasbro decided to start the Joe line again. It's not perfect but what is?
