Hi everyone! First of all, great freakin' site. I've found lots of info here and it got me researching all sorts of info on GI Joe since I got out of it so many years ago. I got into GI Joe while I was living overseas, and for years the only two comics I found were issues 16 and 28, both which were awesome and better than most issues ever released. Later I was fortunate to get the classics 21,23,24. I didn't see the cartoon till I was older and was astonished by how retarded it was. So I left it all behind but retained the memories of defending the backyard from Cobra. Good times. . .
It wasn't until I stumbled on the GI Joe 25th Anniversay 5-Pack at Toys R Us while shopping for nephews that I knew these even came out. I actually sold the few dozen GI Joes I had left from '83-'85 on Ebay awhile ago, and had wished I kept a few of them, like Snake Eyes V2, Firefly, and Zartan. Anyway, I was blown away by the new Snake Eyes from the 5 pack set, that I bought it that day just with the intention of keeping him and trashing the rest. I thought Hasbro did a horrible job with Snake Eyes over the years (except for the Sigma 6 versions), so it was nice to see they went back to his roots. I was surprised how great the figures were for the rest, that I went back and picked up the Cobra and Cobra Legions sets for a trip down memory lane lol. Well, here I find myself picking up all of the figures I stumble upon (in my area they don't seem to hard to fine based on some people's posts). I am really blown away by some, and disappointed with others. Here's what I think Hasbro has done right and wrong so far (*** being awesome, * being poor): GI Joe 5 Pack Duke - **. The figure isn't too bad, but the M-16 with the M203 just doesn't feel like something Duke would have. I like the gun, but it is something I would feel like Gung-Ho would have. Then again, I always liked Duke with a pistol. . . Roadblock - **. Like the size. Holds gun well. Huge gun too. Snake Eyes - ***. Could be the best Snake Eyes figure ever. I like this one more than I liked the V2 as a kid. Screams COMMANDO like he was originally intended to be. Scarlett - **. Not bad. Looks great holding a pistol. The head arches forward too much, but it captures the original feel well. Gung-Ho - ***. It seems hard to top the original Gung-Ho fig but they did it, even though mine has loose joints. I am not crazy about the Vietnam era grenade launcher, especially since he doesn't hold it well, but overall a really nice figure. Cobra 5-Pack Cobra Commander - **. Well done. Cobra Commander as I grew up with. Same weird laser pistol and I think that is awesome. The helmet is a little mis-formed, the head a little too small, but it poses like Cobra Commander should. Destro - ***. Awesome. Captures the size and intimidation that the original lacked. Baroness - **. Some features are awesome, but my figure seems too hunched over. Love the gun. Sleak, stylish, and sexy like the Baroness's gun should be. Storm Shadow - ***. Wow. Best Storm Shadow figure I've ever seen. Looks just like the original but even better. Awesome job Hasbro. Cobra Trooper - ***. I love the Cobra bullet stoppers, especially the original troopers and officers. One of the things I liked about the original Cobras was that they weren't flashy, and seemed to have all sorts of secondary gear like knives, hand-cuffs, pistols, etc of any occasion. I always played with them like they were bad-asses, not the buffoons I discovered them to be in the cartoon. The Dragonov is too small, and the new figure can't hold it like a real gun, but the figure itself is great. Cobra Legions 5-Pack Cobra Commander - **. Don't know why this figure was made. After the hooded Cobra Commander, we've got three figures using the same mold. He looks very Nazi-like to me, and intimidating. Storm Shadow - ***. I am not crazy about flashiness, but the red looks good. I take it that this is more of a ceremonial outfit than anything else. Not a bad recycled figure. Cobra Trooper - **. I always hated how the Cobra soldiers were painted in the comics, but I appreciate seeing a figure for it. Reminds me of the days of Scarface, one of my favorite cobras. Cobra Vehicle Driver - *. What is the point of this guy without a vehicle? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the original, but I would have prefered Scarface himself over this guy. Not to mention most of the Vehicle Drivers I see have messed up eyes and paint jobs. Cobra Air Trooper - *. I think this guy really sucks. Recycled GI Joe Jet Pack. I've never seen him anywhere (I might have missed a comic he was in - was it the one when Clutch went home???) Anyway, could have done without him. Individual Packs Snake Eyes with Timber - *. Yeap, only one star. Head looks stupid and doesn't capture the awesomeness of my favorite GI Joe of all time: Snake Eyes V2. I have barely looked at him since I got him. They just recycled the body so all they had to do was make a great head and they blew it. Cobra Officer - ***. This guys is awesome. Hate the silver Dragonov. WHERE IS THE AK-47??? Nevertheless, looks great holding a pistol from the Cobra 5-Pack. Looks like a guy who would really be in charge of a mission, installation, etc. Well done. Would have liked to see how black gear would have looked, but very happy with this guy. Hooded Cobra Commander - **. Captures the comic look very well. Looks like a real jerk. Flint - **. Love the look, love the new shotgun, but my figure's albows don't bend far enough for him to hold the shotgun like a shotgun. So limited poses unless he is shooting his pistol. If they fixed the arms he'd be a bad-ass. Serpentor - *. This guy is horrible. Loved the original. This guy is crap. I like him less than the Cobra Vehicle Driver from the Legions set. Probably the worst of the 25th releases. Lady Jaye - *. It took me awhile to find a figure with a decent paint job on the face. Should have left the hat off, or given her the original. Like the gear, even though I never understood the harpoon thing. I think the original Lady Jaye wins here. Cobra Red Ninja - **. The giant hammer like thing is silly. I can understand Hasbro's interest in recycling an existing mold. . . Firefly - ***. Well done! Not crazy about the backpack, or the gun (and I know the original was weird, but it looked powerful), but the figure is nice and poses great. Looks like a saboteur and not some leader of ninjas like I heard he is now. Beachhead - ***. Obviously uses the same mold as Firefly, but looks good anyway. Like the gear, although I don't understand the crossbow. Zartan - **. I am actually disappointed with this verson of Zartan. I loved the original figure, but this guy is just missing something. Not crazy about the gun either. It looks like something he'd assassinate someone with, but out of all of the guns Hasbro has produced. . . could have just given me a pistol like he had in the original. Shipwreck - *. I've looked through a ton of these figures and all of them have obvious paint flaws. Like the selection of guns, but I was never a huge Shipwreck fan either. What is his point? Buzzer - ***. Wow. Looks like a badass. Really nice detail and posability. I haven't seen Torch and Ripper yet, but after seeing Buzzer I have high hopes on their quality. A pistol would have been nice. Stalker - **. I refuse to call him Sgt. Stalker. The figure is really nice, but I HATE the oversized MP-40 machinegun. Does anyone at Hasbro know the Germans stopped making that after WWII??? He's such an MP5 kind of guy!!! Flash - **. I refuse to call him Sgt. Flash. Flash and Grunt were the first two GI Joe figure I got when I was a kid, and I am glad to see this guy updated. I think that rounds up what I have so far. Overall I am impressed and think these are no doubt the best figures ever made. I was impressed with the direction of Sigma 6, but are glad to see Hasbro go back to its roots. I don't like many of the guns, the fact the figures can't sit, or that many of the figure's elbows don't bend at least 90 degrees, but oh well. I'll be picking up new figs as I see them. I really, really hope for the following: Major Bludd Scrap-Iron Airborne Zandar All of the Dreadnoks Dr. Mindbender! Spirit Iron-Knife would be killer too. AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL 16 JOES IN 25th FORM IN SOME KIND OF COLLECTORS CASE! I don't care if it costs well over $100 I would buy it. I love the original Joes. . .
