As a kid I remember seeing the movie and liking it, the only thing I could remember after years of never seeing it again was Duke getting a snake to the heart from Serpentor, and the figure for Golobulus.
About 3 years ago I rented it from Netflix and granted I wasn't expecting Citizen Kane, I could see why I never bothered to look for it again. The name Cobra-La is alright, albeit incredibly cheesy. Golobulus just sounds like a horrible nickname you'd give a really fat guy, but the character could have been a lot cooler, and really the only Cobra-La character I thought wasn't that bad was Pythona even though she probably would have been more at home in a New Mutants comic. The whole pulp sci-fi/fantasy background of Cobra-La comes off as something ripped off from an old Doc Savage story. All in all I wouldn't say that I hate Cobra-La, but I think it's an idea that could have been executed a lot better. I disliked the rookies the Joes got waaay more than the Cobra-La crap, I guess Jinx was kind of cool though. Big Lob?..tell me that doesn't sound dirty. Oh, and yeah I'll be a total sucker and buy a Pythona and Golobulus 25th figure too! Last edited by CallMeRotten; 02-14-2009 at 01:30 AM.. |

As a kid I thought it was cool...for kid reasons, they were new figures it was a very "deep" storyline and I actually liked the way they looked. As a comic book fan..the whole reason I dug the GI Joe title was that it was kinda like the Punisher. Gritty and reality based. The more I look into this story it just seems like whoever was in charge was fresh out of ideas and pumping a bunch of horse crap to a kids who would buy new figures and such. As deep as the story is, its totally stupid and contradicts everything the GI Joe universe was really about.

All this nonsense. It's a great watch. Get some popcorn and settle in for an hour and a half. (Beachheads voice is well worth it) Cobra Commanders whine is top notch.
Should it be forgotten in the realm of joe? Yes, i'm afraide. It has no place in the new world order. But, it will always have a place on my dvd rack.

I always disliked CC for being cowardly and selfish. It didn't make sense how such a person could rule an organisation like Cobra.
On the other hand, Serpentor was perfectly suited for the role and had won the admiration of myself and many of my friends. With the introduction of Cobra-La, the show's decision makers must have wanted to make him appear not strong and good and reinforce the notion that Cobra was BAD! Also a cheap copy of the Transformers movie to make a few bucks. |
