Where to begin with Cobra-La? First off, "Cobra-La" was never intended by the writers to be the name! It was merely a placeholder. Some dimwit at Hasblo decided it was the perfect name and they went with it.
Ugh. As already mentioned, bad character designs. Visually speaking, they would have been more at home in Masters of the Universe. They were too out of place in G.I. Joe. Most of us also read the comic book, which had a much more believable and better explained origin for both Cobra Commander and Cobra itself. Once you read that, you could only scrath your head at Cobra-La. It was too difficult a concept to embrace within the G.I. Joe universe. Lastly, too many fans never got too into Serpentor to begin with. Now, he has this huge organization behind him? Not to mention, this powerful entity had not so much as ONE clue to its existence beforehand. It was obviously foisted on us and the kids spoke as one: "Cobra-La? You suck!"

Cobra La was the beginning of the end. The name was ridiculous, the premise totally discounted the canon that had already been established via comic and file cards. Not to mention purple and hot pink figures. The entire thing was horrible.

What's WRONG with Cobra-La? Oh I'll tell you what's wrong with Cobra-La... they barely have any representation in the 25th line!!! Where's Golobulus and Pythona? C'mon Hasbro, I need 20 Royal Guards!!!

I loved the bio-engineering aspect of it. I just didn't like the origin story for it. For me, there is no ancient cicilization. In my Joe-verse, Golobulous is just some mad scientist, who's been working way too long in some half forgetten Cobra lab complex, and has taken to experimenting on himself, and anybody else who might be in the room.
There's a big sign on the wall that says "COBRA LABS" but some weird techno-organic growth has obscured the last two letters. Basically I have Cobra divided in 2 major sides. Cobra ( More realistic terrorist ) is CC w/ the Blue Shirts, Specialists and Crimson Guard. Then Cobra-La ( Vipers, Mutants, BATS) is led by Serpentor ( a figurehead leader ) w/ the Vipers. Venomus Maximus as a General for all the Mutants. Overkill leads the BATS division. Golobulus is the brains behind Cobra-La organization w/ Dr. Mindbender as his main cohort.

Well now you know what's wrong with Cobra-La, basically a hard and fast, extreme approach to change the status quo when it wasn't broke. Cobra-La had it's potential, could have been a contender but should have ratchet it down by 10. The handheld biological weapons, the unstoppable Royal Guard, the deadly Nemesis Enforcer and Pythona taking down the CG was great but they jumped the shark five mintues later with the CC origin, the biological vehicles (I'm going to pull on the muscle fibers of a flying fish like you would press a door opener and that opens up teeth like entrance), the DBZ like powers of Golobulus (is he plugged into a power plant in that flying STD of his?) and the "THEY'RE ALIVE" buildings and structures of Cobra La awaken to defend against a military assault.

Cobra-La isn't any more far-fetched than the Egyptian god episode in Season 2.
It's also not any more far-fetched than the "alternate reality" episodes where Steeler and other Joes end up on an Earth controlled by COBRA, and those are perennial fan favorites. |
