Better question, what was right?
I really wished they had stayed away from that idea. Not a Cobra La hater, just not my thing.
Cobra has won. The Battle is over. Or is it?
The Reign of Tears has begun! Check out my original G.I.Joe story!

The movie killed off not only everything we knew and loved about the show, but killed the show itself. DiC took over from Sunbow and ruined it even further with inferior stories, animation and direction. (I still watch the movie once in a while though as a guilty pleasure...)

Cobra-La was too fantastical even for the world of GI Joe. Of course this was also a time when my tastes were broadening and GI Joe was not the center of my universe anymore. Plain and simple Cobra-La was a really bad idea and I am wondering what ever happened to the creative team that came up with it. They are probably stock speculators now.
....and knowing is half theYo Joe!

For me... I didn't mind them at all until I heard this:
Serpentor: "Cobraaaa lalalalalalalalaLAH!!!"
And then heard the Cobra La guards howling: "lalalalalalalalalalalala"
Made me think of just about every annoying Christmas Carol ever written, but to the nth degree.
So, if I mute it every time that happens I really enjoy the movie!
Oh, but Big Lob & Chuckles both needed bullets between the eyes!

The Cobra-La thing was a plot device to reboot/change the Joes vs. Cobra dynamic in order to keep it interesting and to sell more toys. Serpentor, Overlord, and the Iron Grenadiers were all ways to up the ante while making sure to sell more toys. If there's a new villain, kids need the new figure.
The addition of a lot of sci-fi bio-mech organisms / grandiose conspiracy type of elements made it difficult for many to suspend their disbelief and buy into the new story. It really does not make sense for the "leaders" of Cobra (i.e. Destro, Baroness, Zartan, etc.) who are human to fight and risk their lives so another species can dominate the planet. Added to the story problem was that it was simply too big of a departure from the regular stuff kids were interested in. If a kid wanted to play with bugs in that time frame he went into Sectaurs and that was a short-lived as a toy line.
Until I saw the movie, I had no idea that the Cobra-La colony was supposed to be an ancient race and civilization that predated mankind. -Going into it, I thought the Cobra-La figures were mutants developed at a Cobra lab on some remote island sort of like "The Island of Dr. Moreau." The movie made short work of that idea...

Not Hasbro approved.

The name was silly. IIRC, Flint Dille said it was a placeholder name and Hasbro just decided to go with it.
Making Cobra Commander something other than a human was questionable. Golobulus had potential, but who wants a figure that can't even stand upright?
IIRC, they initially planned a major Cobra-La expansion for '88, but the best thing they ever did with Cobra La was to just let it fade away.
Although i like the '88 line, i think the fact that the Sunbow cartoon was over by then, plus the fact it went out with a muffled pop rather than a bang, meant the line never really recovered.

I actually liked Cobra La but the whole spore thing was just...yeah.
Oh and the pussification of Flint who, after several seasons, is suddenly incapable of leading the Joe team so newbie Falcon takes charge and leads the Joes to victory...yeah...ummm...yeah.
