I think character portrayal or design helps a lot for example Zartan is easily one of the coolest looking characters in Cobra from the biker gear to his ability to mimic others he's a bad guy you would want to work for or Starscream wether he's plotting behind Megatron ' s back or cowering in fear when his plans are found out he's another bad guy you love to hate

I love the bad guys! (except that new lizard-face Freddy Krueger. HATE that guy) Others have already spoke to the appeal of the bad guy, but this thread is missing something, so I'll just leave this here for now...

Cobra is always doing something interesting. They have plans, dreams, ambition, all with the will and means to get it done. In comparison, Joes are global fun police.
Seriously though, I'd take the villains any day. |

I'm going to have to say it is more Freudian than that:
The bad guys get to do what we - as moral, upright citizens - really, really would like to do sometimes...don't play by any rules. Yeah, and then there is that Cobra is really, really cool thing too. I really think we all harbor a deep-seated desire to take over the world. Bwhahahahahaha! Bwahahahahahaha! Go ahead and try to deny it! Just look at all those army-building collections. Are they Joes? No! Those armies are composed of Cobra minions. Then there is this website. Is it called Mauler.com. Nooooooooooooo....... |

I love the good guys. I remember in the early 70's my dad was stationed at Fort Hood in Texas and the rage was Johnny West, a Marx Toy company line of western figures (I had the Captain Maddox Figure). The number one bad guy was an hombre by the name of Sam Cobra (the original snake). I also had the original 11 1/2 inch (about) GI Joe. You have to understand that I believed that my dad, who was a SFC Sergeant First Class at the time, could whip any man alive including Superman (my dad was my hero). So since he was in the US Army (good guy) I gravitated to good guys like Clayton Moore (Lone Ranger). This may be too deep for some at the HISS, but I think your father figure has a lot to do with the person you become and the things you like. Bad guys are NOT more complex, they experience the same things the good guys experience in life, (death, unfairness, taxes, divorce, hatred, etc...) but it is how they behave and live their lives that separates them from the bad characters or should I say, the weak.
Btw, my dad can still whip any man alive... Last edited by 733; 07-02-2015 at 12:34 AM.. |

Snake Eyes looks way better than, say, Monkeywrench.
Firefly looks way better than Grunt. Big Ben is better than Vypra. Serpentor is better than Ice Cream soldier. Bth sides have good and bad figures, regardless of alignment. |

With a few exceptions, Cobra generally tends to be more "cool-looking" across the board, but generally speaking "faceless" or masked characters generally tend to be perceived as "cooler" anyway.
In terms of overall quality, they tend to have more interesting accessories as well, though again, hardly a universal constant. |
