What is the deal here? Does the color of mask indicate some sort of rank or something? I have several of the red masked ones but I seem to remember them having a black mask back in the day and the other day I saw the black mask at target.

So, any significance with the colors or does it not mean anything?

In my Joeverse, the basic troopers are given the bare minimum uniform/webgear/helmet and sent out to fight with a relatively low expectation that they will come back in one piece.
As a result, Cobra trooper units are comprised of various uniform combinations.

In other words, its up to you.

I work at a historic site that was a fort/ prison during the civil war. back then you could tell what unit a soldier was with by the color accents on his uniform- red was artillery, lt blue was infantry, yellow was cavalry, green was medical & black was for staff officers.
I'm trying to set up my cobras based on someting similar.
red mask officers & troopers fly my FANGS. Officers with red shoulder tabs command the Vipers that are part of the HISS squads. Officers with purple shoulder tabs serve in the Terror Drome. I use stinger drivers as officers too.

In sunbow cartoons the trooper's mask is black. In the original comics, the troopers mask is red.

There is no pattern to it in the 25th line either, as the black ones are troopers, the silver one is an officer (wave 1 - YOJOE.COM | Cobra Officer ), but then then the red ones bounce around between officers and troopers.

The first red one in the 2nd Cobra 5 pack is a trooper, "Scar Face" is an officer from the 2 pack with the Fred CG, and the latest one we got in wave 12 is a trooper again.

I don't think it's the color of the mask. Plus I just realized the two in the TRU three pack are both black, and one is an officer and the other is a trooper! So that kills the troopers are the black ones theory.

Looking at the classic ARAH line, in '82 both were black and only the silver (officer) vs the red (cobra / trooper?) cobra symbols on their chests separated the two as which was which.

Guys Hasbro is not following story lines. Sunbow cartoon had a uniform code. Troopers had knee pads, no gloves, skin color necks, no rank symbol on helmet black mask with red cobra logo. Officers had black gloves, black mask, rank symbol on helmet, no knee pads, with silver cobra logo. Hasbro has yet to release true officers or troopers with exact color code. And both troopers and officers had white web gear.

You could think of it like this:

Each type of Trooper/Officer combination is a COBRA legion.

1982/83 ARAH Officers and Soldiers
This Legion would also include the 25th 5-pack soldiers.

TRU COBRA Infantry Officers and Soldiers.

25th single card Officers and single card silver symbol Soldiers.

TRU SRO Officers and Soldiers. This Legion would also include the MASS Device DVD Soldier.

Modern red mask Soldiers are in another Legion. You could, in theory, use the ARAH TRU COBRA Infantry red mask "Scarface" Officers to command them.

ARAH mold "comic" Officers and Soldiers, and 25th Legions Officers (Air Troopers) and Soldiers I use as COBRA forces in their dress uniforms. Or you could just use them as another Legion, or better yet, officers and troopers in the COBRA Navy as that yellow/blue combination does make me think of naval forces for some reason.

to me,all the troopers regardless of webgear color/size of cobra emblem/logo on the helme/facemask color are the same.

i group them all under troopers and they take orders from CC.its easier that way.
