Cobra troopers we're disbanded in or around 1990 - 1991 in the cobraverse. Vipers took on the role of grunt. The troopers just vanished from one comic to another in the early days. I must say I like the flow better that way. Vipers, then selected special units I.E. heavy weapons "Saw Viper" Night operations "Night Viper" check out g.i. joe issues 120 through 135 The best and most awesome art and use of vipers around =)

Original 1982-83 style figures and most correct (IMO):
Black Masks, Red Logo for Troopers, Silver Logo for Officers. Comic book usually gave them red masks, and logos and web gear colour varied greatly depending on how the ink guy was paying attention that day. We have seen a couple 25th versions of this style. Other 25th releases have had officers with grey masks and webbing and with both red and silver chest logos. So there no real cannon being followed for some of them. POC/30th troopers are back to black masks and red sigils, but the only male officer was in the SDCC Missile Command set with a silver chest logo, so its pretty rare. |

The original Cobra action figures came with black face masks. The red ones later developed as an homage to the comics. Jason |

Holy necroposting Batman!
My take on the subject: I see Cobra Troopers as the vast legions of Cobra, including all the non-combat roles such as supplies, basic field mechanics, logistics, etc, so they have a range of uniforms. Vipers are the more elite/trained men, including the regular Viper that plays a role that is a cross between the 11B (infantrymen MOS) in the Army and your basic Marines. This explains why Vipers use more advanced armor and weaponry compared to troopers. |

When I was troop building 25th figures, the mask and insignia color variants were all different Cobra Units to me and I tried to have at least three of each version.

It's cool... as long as the conversation remains relevant. Sometimes I'll see necro-threads brought up simply to ask where the original poster's pictures went, etc...
You're good.

Blue shirts are always relevant
I found myself asking the same questions when the 25th line was released and wondering why the variations. IMO Cobra troops were never discontinued, some just became Vipers, but they were still occasionally in both the comics and the cartoon after the vipers appeared. I was never much of a fan. GI Joe line ended for me in 1986 and came back to life in 2007! |

The 25th/modern line always included nods to the original cardbacks, cartoons and comics(past and then present).
So thats mainly why we get all the different colored logos, web gear and face masks. They remained more partial to the Marvel comics and Marvel-Sunbow toon and their vintage card art. So their figures always turned out some incarnation or even hybrid of those. A little odder was the red and blue Cobra Viper pilot that came with the Fang and jet glider two pack. That seemed like a new Hasbro invention, they just reversed the standard Cobra Viper colors into a pilot/ground assault trooper. The Cobra trooper pilot came with that Marvel comics gas mask and helmet combo but colored in a bright lighter red almost orange. |
