Holy necroposting Batman!
My take on the subject: I see Cobra Troopers as the vast legions of Cobra, including all the non-combat roles such as supplies, basic field mechanics, logistics, etc, so they have a range of uniforms. Vipers are the more elite/trained men, including the regular Viper that plays a role that is a cross between the 11B (infantrymen MOS) in the Army and your basic Marines. This explains why Vipers use more advanced armor and weaponry compared to troopers. |

I have built up a suitable number of DG Wave 2 blue yellow troops as grunts and a few Wave 1 as officers. They look rather nice as a group. The W2 seems to based on an early animated commerical, which probably got some coloring cues from the comic. Not sure what to do with my 25th era headless CTs though.

I work at a historic site that was a fort/ prison during the civil war. back then you could tell what unit a soldier was with by the color accents on his uniform- red was artillery, lt blue was infantry, yellow was cavalry, green was medical & black was for staff officers.
I'm trying to set up my cobras based on someting similar. red mask officers & troopers fly my FANGS. Officers with red shoulder tabs command the Vipers that are part of the HISS squads. Officers with purple shoulder tabs serve in the Terror Drome. I use stinger drivers as officers too. This is sorta what I had planned to do with my Blueshirts but it never got finalized. Black mask/red emblem soldiers were going to be standard infantry. Black mask/silver emblem were pilots of FANGs, CLAWs, Trouble Bubbles, etc. in honor of the fact that their color scheme matched the original Viper Glider Pilot. Red mask/red emblem were going to operate things like the Ferret and ASP, but we never got modern era versions of those so these guys need to be repurposed. Plus now I'm thinking that all ground vehicle operators should be "Grayshirts" like the Stinger Driver. Yellow webgear troops were always just on my comic shelf only, but now I'm thinking about making them Cobra navy or something. It makes me feel somewhat deficient to realize it has been ten years and I still haven't worked this out yet.

But yeah, Cobra Officers have alternately been clearly setup to be "mini-bosses" (martial arts expert infiltrators, spies, and saboteurs) with the Cobra Troopers described as fairly formidable infantry (experts with all NATO and Warsaw Pact small arms, etc..) Or alternately Cobra Troopers are scumbag goons with minimal training, equipment, and skills and Cobra Officers are marginally more ambitious and charismatic scumbag goons with minimal training, equipment, and skills. Just depends on which filecards you read. Made even more confusing by Cobra Troopers/Officers wearing Viper Gear at least once. |

IIRC canon has contradicted itself a lot on the nature of Cobra Troopers/Officers/Vipers, but the most recent Viper filecards did indeed indicate that they were a more elite specialized infantry force.

That being said, "basic" Vipers are similar to our Rangers in the U.S. military. They function as light infantry with special operations capabilities. Troopers on the other hand are more complex in my Joe world. Prior to Cobra elevating itself to controlling nation states and thus having a conventional military force*, the troopers were the terrorist militia/line infantry (Vipers did not exist at this time) of Cobra. The uniform of the trooper however was also worn by Cobra personnel who were not infantry ie. motor transport, mechanics, repairmen of various equipment, and the like. However, all troopers received basic infantry tactics training. As far as rank goes, the "title" of the trooper has nothing to do with rank. Much like the real life military, there can be ranks within all specialties. Therefore, there are both enlisted and officer ranks among the troopers and the Vipers. Prestige is another issue though, a Range Viper corporal would likely be insubordinate to a trooper Staff Sergeant that does electrician work on the base. *Because let's face it, an organization that has Night Ravens, Rattlers, tanks, an entire plethora of highly trained/specialized troops/units, that flying aircraft carrier thing from the cartoon is NOT a paramilitary terrorist organization, it is a developed country with a fully funded military budget |

In my Joeverse, blueshirts with black masks are officers, and all the other blueshirts wear red masks.
I tend to think of Blueshirts as basic infantry, they're not the best at what they do, but they're a cost effective force to use for the most common soldier's tasks - security, guarding everything from outposts to prisoners, and basic infantry work. Patroling, combat operations, etc. I can also get behind the blue jumpsuit being the basic uniform for non combat arms. So a Cobra cook or vehicle mechanic would have Blueshirt gear and would probably wear some version of that in his or her regular duties. The Vipers are generally speaking better armed and better equipped, but also more expensive and fewer in number. They specialize in offensive operations, work extensively with armor and other vehicles. I think of them as heavy assault infantry. They're not special forces though, they're still conventional soldiers. I consider the weapons and equipment focused Viper types as Vipers with a specialist training. The Vipers tend to deploy in the same squads as these guys. You'd see HEAT, SAW, Frag Vipers (and also Tele Vipers) deploying as part of a basic Viper Squad. Maybe 50% regular Vipers and 50% specialists. The real special operators in my Cobraverse are the environmental tropers - the Night Vipers, the Snow Serpents, Alley Vipers, etc. And then the Siegies of course. And these special forces tend to have experience as being trained in the past as Viper specialists. So a team of Range Vipers wouldn't bring a regular SAW Viper along with them on patrol - one of them who had been a SAW Viper in the past would just grab a machine gun and be the team's gunner. That way these special forces aren't being slowed down by some weapons specialist who may be great with his support weapon but can't really keep up with them. |
