Bear in mind, many a joe toy is based partly on fantasy and just a bit of reality---ie the X-19 phantom, X-30 conquest, but again many of the joe vehicles were based pure and simple on fact-like the XP-14 skystriker, X-16 ghoststriker, P-40 warhawk, cobra rattler, defiant and crusader space shuttle, night raven, gi joe hummer, uss flagg.
So which sells better, something that looks closer to the real thing or something totally amazing looking that we watched on tv? I had always wanted other Joe vehicles to be more fact based but some of the ships just really blow me away. I guess if I had a choice, I would go with more fact based. For me its about knowing that Ive seen that plane or vehicle in action and I really do appreciate all the work that goes into getting the birds up and about. I also like the ground and sea vehicles, its just easier to make up stories and the futuristic stuff looks more streamlined and has a lack of personality. I kinda like the more fact based stuff, but.......things like the Trouble Bubble, Fang and Claw are really cool. I think the early line was great with fact based stuff, with a litle fantasy thrown in, toward the end of the toyline though.........I mean things like the Bug were just stupid.

There are so many newer military vehicles that weren't around in the 80s that Hasbro could introduce plenty of new Joe vehicles without going to crazy.

you know, they have entire lines of military men in real military gear warming the pegs at tru and target. enjoy them; to each their own.
i'll take my gi joe with bats, trouble bubbles, crazy dudes who can change their appearance and lead biker gangs at the same time. heck, i can even dig super suits if they're done in an interesting way. Yo Joe! |

I think it can have a splash of fantasy but must be plausible... In the original line starting with the first series, there were laser canons and Flash is a Laser soldier... But things did get stretched too far...

Fact based w/ a touch of fantasy for me to make it cutting edge. I was always more interested in stuff like the Snowcat, Hydrofoil, Whale, Rattler etc. All based on real vehicles but with extra guns and modifications. i.e Rattler's VTOL ability and gunner station)

I think the STORM EAGLE would have done much better had it been larger, some of the dayglo stuff really was a waste, too bad they didnt have better ideas. The STAR BRIGADE prototype ships were definately cool, shame it ended before they could put them out.

Actually most of the vehicles in GI JOE were based off designs for vehicles in the Militiary, concepts the looked into, ect... There was a thread about it...

I like the fact based stuff best. But the stuff like the Conquest X-30 are like the logical conclusion of what would have been made... So I don't mind stuff like that either.
The Cobra Mamba is a good example too. When it came out I though that it was totaly fiction; but then I saw REAL helicopters that have inter-meshing blades and now it does'nt seem so unreal! The X-Wing chopper also was based on artist renderings of a REAL helicopter that transforms into a jet. The Air Force was researching a helicopt/jet combo at one time. So at least it had some basis in reality. I hate it when fans say all the later stuff sucked because it was unrealistic, and fruity colored! Lots of the old stuff streched reality and figures like Lady Jaye and Air tight were brightly colored long before the 90s! BUT the 1980s stuff didn't go too far with it. Man portable lasers and jetpacks are all stuff that at least might happen some day. The SHARC is very convincing as a shallow water sub for coastal defence or special operations; saying that it flys goes a little to far. I don't mind the "Fake" stuff if its done well. A realistic paint scheme goes a LONG way to selling the idea! Case in point being the Skyhawk, SHARC, and Water Mocasin. They are definately streching reality, but they're convincing with their color schemes. How many people would buy these vehicles if they were originaly colored orange or purple?!?! The 90s vehicles failed as much for their BAD color schemes as they did for they're crazy designs! Last edited by IronMan76; 02-04-2009 at 01:53 AM.. |

I want them to redo the BUGG, so I guess that's my opinion...
actually, not really. When I was a kid, I loved the stuff that was closer to reality, i.e. jeeps or tanks or real planes. |
